I'm on a journey to find out who was the real Robin Hood.
Was Robin Hood a real person or was he just part of myths and legends?
I went for a wild camp at Robin Hoods grave which is located in Mirfield, West Yorkshire.

This period is one thats is obscured the reality of England as an effective province of the Norman empire (House of Plantagenet) ie Henry the 8th spoke only norman french the language in which British law is still enacted. The levy of tax through Sheriffs became incresingly heavy coupled with greter injustice and small land siezures to fund the crusades this is the period of Robin Hood. Richard Coer de Lyon romantically name Richard the Lionheart was supposedly taken captive and a huge bounty was raised for his release and continued crusades. The crown of Thorns housed in the amazing Sainte-Chapelle Paris required nearly half of the gross income of France then the foremost European power to purchase these funds again for crusades. We see perhaps an analogous period of history to our own of Robber Barons and costly wars. Robin an archer would have been a well paid mercenary a Long Bow Man the two finger salute would be given in protest that any longbow man taken captive on french feilds would have his fingers chopped off.

I suppose to escape military service of his lord Robin would have taken to the Forests and many like him in this period and of corse in the North the monastrys were dominant in the administration of commerce and agricultural production siezing the common land and driving poor folk into the forests and on to poorer sttlement. The main Northern roads and the cargo and trade that commenced upon them were the targets of organised robbery that would have been conducted by such folk forced on to the fringes. Perhaps Robin may have had some notable lineage to the the minor noble familys that held power prior to Williams french invasion, that may have fallen foul of the levy and lost there land. Such rotten nobles may have been romanticised with the souring of life under the norman french regime. For the old Feudal english robber barons offered no justice or measure in there tax demand hence initially the magna carta and right of redress and tax system were very popular under William, the imperial wars of the crusades bought that honeymoon to an end

This video was absolutely brilliant, I’ve only just found your Chanel Gaz and I’ve been binge watching for the last 3 evenings and enjoyed every one but this with the research youv been able to do and your brill telling of the story of all the characters associated with Robin Hood was spell binding, yourself along with the beautiful Fendi are my new favourite KZfaqrs. I haven’t been watching the videos in any particular order but each one is “ stand alone” brilliant. I’m a southerner by birth ( Sussex by the sea) I’m now a 67 year old Granny and have been married to my “ tattooed” Yorkshireman, for the past 43 years, so I consider myself an “ honorary “ Yorkshire lass” lol much ❤️ to yourself and little Fendi 👍💕🐾

Robin Hood's tales always fascinated me. My first name is Robin as well. Who he truly was probably will always be a mystery, as it should be. I can't blame a man for hating religious people, the church & politician's. They were corrupt back then & are still so to this day. Thanks for another amazing adventure Gaz! Fab Video Gaz. I always heard/read a bit about the Kirklees Priory Estate and Robin hood burial and seen a few pics/videos and walked on the public footpaths nearby a few times heading North to Wyke and Liversedge area, so to see the actual buildings so up close and on the drone shots was one those great smile moments again for me. And what a great guy Robin Hood must have been. The last few years feel like the poor have been getting robbed to give to the rich and it's still on going!

Dude, one: I love your videos. Very well put together and history lessons on top of the love of the great outdoors. Two: going over your equipment list on Amazon should prove to anybody who is thinking about starting a KZfaq channel that, even with medium grade equipment, you can make videos that look every bit as good as those on TV. Your videos are crisp and clear, and look as good or better than most TV documentaries. Which should prove to anybody that, with even your phone since most phones, have tremendous cameras in them… you can come out with videos that look amazing. You can do so much in post, with software, like da Vinci, or Vegas or really any video software. That you can even take a bad looking video and make it look decent. The funny thing is, your videos look better than some of those people here on KZfaq that have $10,000 cameras, and thousands more in lighting and everything else they think they need to do what they do. When, you just proved that with pennies on the dollar… You can do the same or better, simply by understanding camera angles, B roll footage and software manipulation. Great job and you got a new subscriber in me. Let me know if you ever want some original music to go with your videos. Take care, and thank you again for the great videos.

Heading from the south via the M1, take junction 29 and then the A617 / A6191 for Mansfield, turning onto the A614 Old Rufford Road, following signs to Sherwood Forest - he's buried on the roundabout - the one just before the visitors car park !

Thanks for the video Gaz it was very interesting. Now a couple of points, I like you had a mad desire as a very young lad to find out all I could about Robin. So my first visit to the priory was in the mid 1950s where the priory still stood, it wasn't wrecked totally by the dissolution and the site was open to the public, but the grave was not where it is now it was about 500 yards from the priory in the direction of where the Three Nunns hostelry used to be. As we can all appreciate there are many versions of who Robin of the hoode was, but whoever he and his band were roamed far and wide. and there used to be a museum between Shadwell and Otley where Little Johns long bow was on display ( only three quarters of the bow was intact but it was still massive). As for Marion I learned that she was a real Marion of Fitzwalter and her Family home was in one of the suburbs of Sheffield the exact place I am afraid I can no longer remember now as my memory tends to go the older I get. but her ancestral home used to be open to the public as a minor stately home. Anyways thanks again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video, Gaz. A good mixture of camping and history, nicely sympathetic to the lore. As for Robin Hood's identity. For me he is Robert of Huntingdon. Not just because I preferred Jason Connery's portrayal of the outlaw in season 3 of Robin of Sherwood, but because he in fact might be kith & kin. His sister Isabel is likely an ancestor of mine via her descendant Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, Scotland, who, as Earl of Shetland, fathered a lot of illegitimate children on the islands.

Great video Gaz, Me and my mates went to take a look in the 80s, found it the first time during the day, but the second time was the early hours of the morning when we were camping out a mile away at my mate's farm, we had a stolen orange flashing roadworks light to guide us through the pitch black woods, haha. We likely would have found it in the dark, but one of the mates got scared at something and ran, so we all ran, haha, funny as hell running through the woods at 2am with only a flashing light to help up see. Now planning to go back for a look after seeing your video. Wishes I live in one of the multimillion-pound apartments the Kirklees Hall was converted into a few years back; very nice secluded area. I have to ask, did you get special permission to walk around the grounds? I was always told it is private, plus to get to the Hall and the outbuildings, you have to get through electric gates. Ps, the priory gatehouse looks a damn sight better today than when I last saw it years ago; it was derelict at the time; great to see someone spent a fortune making it into a home.

You mentioned the archery contests. I thought of that scene from Robin Hood: Men in Tights. "I lost? I lost?? I'm not supposed to lose!" Apparently KZfaq had the same thought because they suggested watching it on KZfaq Movies 😂

A friend of mines girlfriends mum and dad used to live in one of the houses at kirklees hall. One night he was in the kitchen when he felt a tugging on his leg, he turned around expecting to see his kid there but there was nothing there. He used to love it up there but after that he never stayed over and always left before it got dark, the mum n dad actually got a priest in to perform an exorcism as their son regularly saw thing he couldn't explain.

My old stomping ground mate. I lived in Pontefract all my life and often camped in Wentbridge Woods. I must admit I was told Robin Hood came from Wakefield so he was definitely from Yorkshire like us. By the way your accent makes me homesick. I now live on the other side of the other side of the Pennines after marrying a Lancashire lass who I met at Uni. Anyway just working my way through your videos which are very entertaining and informative.

Robin Heud/Hood was truly a hero taking from the rich and giving to the poor is a heroic story that deserves to be remembered and treasured. I grew up with his stories and was fascinated with the "bow and arrow" and the bad Sheriff of Nottingham and had thought Lady Marion was part of the story too but NOT, that's good to know. Robin must have felt protected by the forest cos he lived his life in them and the arrow landed in the right place. So Be It!!!
