People are over fakes, whether it be fake marketing, fake authenticity or fake transparency. A new content consciousness has taken hold, according to Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, and the duo argues that the creative process-particularly in the entrepreneurial context-should have a sense of authorship that is inextricably linked to the core philosophy of your practice. In this talk, they explain why you should never give up on the fundamental principles that give you a sense of purpose, even if you have to fight for your ideas to make economic sense.
Having worked together for a decade designing sets for significant Hollywood films prior to establishing their firm, Standefer and Alesch are partners in business and in life-they founded Roman and Williams in 2002 and married in 2005. They are responsible for the buildings and interiors of some of the world’s most iconic establishments, including the British Galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Ace Hotel in New York, the Boom Boom Room, The Standard High Line, Le Coucou, La Rotonde and more. The duo’s first freestanding retail expansion, Roman and Williams Guild NY and the restaurant La Mercerie, embodies their life’s work. They’re fixtures on Fast Company’s America’s 50 Most Influential Designers and the AD100; recipients of The Wall Street Journal’s Innovators Award and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Interior Design; and were recognized as visionaries by the Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation.
