I think Coney was kinda onto something when talking about how we interface with IP in the 21st century after the birth of the Internet but I don’t know if it totally landed. Fans of IP have been telling their own stories and creating crossovers independent of their original authors for centuries. What’s changed is the ease of access and increased opportunity to share your personal creations with a receptive audience. I do think he’s spot on that the collective power of the masses has never been stronger and can now easily overpower the intention of the original IP creator.

I love when Coney talks about media. That’s why Fact or Opinion is some of the best content, because he always has insightful views on the topic. Even if you disagree with some of the takes, it’s really refreshing to see someone talk about games in a way that’s both enthusiastic and critical, cause it’s coming from someone with a genuine passion and relatability who’s also able to get meta and look at all the interesting things surrounding media, whether it’s the creation, impact, or our consumption of it.

Coney's point on media is what I call the Fortnite-tification of media and the internet. Media is increasingly losing the original context in which that media was produced and being boiled down to pure iconography. It's like children playing make believe with their action figures. I don't really have an opinion when it comes to whether it's a good thing or bad thing but man do I find it strange and interesting.

It's been a while since I saw it broken down in a video but the monetisation is pretty messed up if I remember right. The content, from cosmetics to games, is user generated. Yes, that creation can be fun or rewarding or whatever, but what Roblox essentially has is a community of developers that it doesn't really have to pay. Like yes, there's a monetisation model but it's kind of like a company town. The devs are paid in scrip (Robux). Cashing out Robux has a wildly different return rate than what it takes to buy Robux in the first place. 100K costs $1000 but cashes out at $350. At first glance that doesn't seem too unreasonable, within the context of capitalism. The company has to be profitable, right? I'd argue that depends on whether you see Roblox as a game or as a platform. If it's the former, the ability to monetise is a nice perk. If it's the latter, Roblox owes everything it is to creators who are getting screwed. One thing I found particularly insidious is you can't cash out until you've reached a certain amount of Robux (100K). This might be trivial detail for a serious developer or team, but in the case of the hypothetical 14 year old Coney mentioned, that's a serious hurdle to clear. In all probability you make a game that gets a bit of play, you fail to reach 100k minimum Robux cashout, and you just end up spending those Robux back into the economy. It just seems kind of shitty because the potential of monetisation is kind of the draw to create the content. Edit: Also I've never used Roblox but from what I've heard the development tools don't translate well to other programming languages etc. I guess you can learn big picture things like what an effective gameplay loop is, but yeah, one of the apparent upsides (kids learning to code) isn't even necessarily as positive as it seems like it could be. Edit 2: I'm 90% sure People Make Games made the video I watched.

After seeing what Coney had to say with his media discussion, I'm sad I wasn't there for that discussion. I do agree that with how technology and searchability have really expanded the scope of how people cater and manipulate their experiences and now they (audience) perceive characters. I would love to hear Coney delve more into this topic.
@twixchexmix
@twixchexmix Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely interesting to see how there’s a push and pull dynamic between media and the audience now thanks to the internet, but (perhaps inevitably due to capitalism) is pervaded by manipulative tactics which leaves people who aren’t already used to these things from growing up with the internet like children and older people especially vulnerable.
@tymandude1510

It's created a world where media and the characters within it have been boiled down to pure iconography devoid of the original context in which that media and those characters existed. It's like being a kid and playing make believe with all your favourite action figures from hugely diffrent pieces of media. I don't know whether it's a good thing or bad thing but I do know it's interesting and strange.

1535: I would unironically listen/watch a youtube video from this channel rambling about that topic. It's really fascinating, though it's not really a modern phenomenon per se, it's just more widespread and upfront. If you look at literature you can see similar examples of that type of media/character alteration by an individual that's not directly involved in its creation. For example, some of Arthur's knights were added/fleshed out according to the values/visions the writer adapting/transcribing the current source material; or the portrayal of the religious figures in Dante's Divine Comedy reflects his own vision/experience with said figures. Anyway, it's really neat food for thought

i think creativity has changed. people used to think of original characters and make up their own stories. now people use a “media texture pack” on whatever it is they do. like how we describe things as being like another thing rather than describing it as its own unique thing. using the cookie cutter style of stealing other characters or whatever is very effective but not necessarily good. you lose a lot of special stuff like early half life mods that were super original but maybe a little janky. now its recycled assets and janky
@TotalRaMpAgE981
@TotalRaMpAgE981 Жыл бұрын
Creativity hasn't changed, it has always been based in iteration an deviation. The only difference is that creative tools are far more accessible than before, and there are more avenues to show creative work. High quality mods and creations tend to come from people with previous experience, so when more people without that experience are able to get their hands on the same tools and promote their creations in ways that weren't available before, you'd expect there to be more average things coming out.

What I was expecting: Coney plays funny haha pay-to-win Roblox game and dunks on some kids for content What I got: An in depth analysis of how unregulated monetization and copyright infringement are encouraging aspiring game developers to extort children for their parent's money on a global scale while the company continues to expand and profit and circumvent laws at an unfathomable rate because the law doesn't want to touch the digital world and WHY IS THERE A STOCK MARKET AND WATERED DOWN NFTS AND A NEW PLACE FOR MATURE CONTENT AAAAAAAHHHHHHH Good movie. 1:20 that's exactly how my dad is w/ smash. "Why are you playing the same game for so long?" I think some people age themselves into a corner when it comes to enjoying/understanding new things. edit: I call what he's describing with the Red M&M example "vague fiction". Too much of the media we consume is just a repackaged or reinterpreted version of something else. This goes for meta-analysi, reactions, reviews, fan fictions, some fangames, even some mainstream games like fortnite too. We're so obsessed with using things in the toolbox that we never add anything new. And as far as substance, it has neither the connection to the real world and/or practical utility that non-fiction does, nor the sense of creativity and/or explorative purpose and/or freedom that real fiction does, it only takes the most consummable elements of both. I think it's an unseen problem.

Mainly the second. What I believe Coney is presenting is the idea that these days the cultural perception of a character in many ways supercedes even the original vision in how that character is understood. Almost like a collective application of Death of the Author. You mosy clearly see this in shipping these days where the explicit text of a work can be superceded by the cultural understanding that two characters are definitely in love with each other. It can also be seen though stuff like how the Universal Dracula film has fundementally altered the public perception of Dracula and Vampires in a way that the original novel and it's author never intended. Most of the time it's not on such a sheer level, but those cultural ideas still spread even in smaller doses. A notable example relating to video games being Princess Daisy, whom definitely provides a blueprint of a personality in the mario games, but most of her popularity comes from the cultural idea of daisy as she's been depicted and developed by the mario fandom, as opposed to her actual depictions in the mario games.
