When you didn’t know that what you really needed today was Mary reacting to Robocop, and then you randomly check KZfaq… 😁 Unlike many other films of this type, the graphic violence actually serves a purpose beyond sensationalism. The director, Paul Verhoeven, grew up during the Nazi occupation of Holland in WWII, and saw firsthand what real violence was like. When he saw American films he saw violence toned way down so that it almost became acceptable, with little consequence and no link to the real world. When he came to do Robocop he decided to put the violence front and centre, to make the audience unable to brush it off. It’s sort of a hyperbolic exaggeration that satirises American cinema while also giving real impact to the events of the story. What a movie! Hopefully Total Recall is up next!

Eh, both practical effects and CGI have their ups and down. Practical effects are that impressive and classical because they are done in real life which not even the most advanced CGI cannot come close to matching but they have their limits and they can only do so much that the laws of physics in real life can allow which limits the potential for something very spectacle that you can't catch in real life (especially done on a massive scale). Now for CGI, honestly, all comes down to how well animated it is and the budget behind it is given. You either got crappy graphics that make PS2 graphics look more impressive by comparison or you got some of the most eye catching and jaw dropping CGI well made that you could even mistake it for something in real life.

The stop-motion stuff was wonky back then, it's even more blatant now. ED-209 is a machine and it's easier to do that in CGI than animals or esp. humans, so these shots would be a great candidate for CGI.

There are different types of grenades Mary. The main explosion is triggered by a fuse wich takes a few seconds to burn, thus allowing you to throw the greande away. The fuse is usually a chemical reaction inside the body of the grenade and once ignited it cant be stopped. There are also different ways of igniting said fuse. A common one would be a lever under coil pressure hold in place by a pin. Once the pin is released the lever springs back and hit the fuse, thus starting the countdown. That being said, if you are holding the grenade but dont let go off the lever, you can insert the pin back in the whole where it came from and the grenade becomes disarmed again. If you pay attention at 18:25 he's removing the pin and the lever just flys off, after that there's really no way to stop the explosion. He seems rather chill about it cause usually it only takes between 5-7 seconds for most types to explode but ohh well its a movie after all, bad guy gotta do his thing. I could be slightly wrong but in escence that's the answer to your question!

That is a 'future' grenade with a digital timer on it. Ya can watch Bob crawl over there as it counts down 7, 6, 5, as he reaches and it falls. Even a small alarm, sounds like waking up in the morning back then, that it is armed and maybe 3 second fuse and BOOM! I wonder if if can be stopped before the alarm goes off.

Blaupunkt used to be the absolute pinnacle of radio technology - car audio, home sound systems, early cell phones, etc. Jensen, Kenwood, and Alpine have since caught up (more or less) but, in the late 1980s, they weren't anywhere close to Balupunkt's lead. With the exception of Dick Jones falling from the window (primitive CG), all the effects in the movie were practical. ED-209 was a 'bigature' animated through stop-motion and composited into scenes - in a few scenes, full-scale components were used (manipulated by off-screen rigs). This is a huge reason why the visual effects have held up so well over the 35+ years since this film was made.

The Future Of Law Enforcement. Before Peter Weller was cast as RoboCop, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered for the role. Weller lost 3 lbs a weigh from wearing the suit. He couldn't eat any solid food, except for Yogurt, Ice Cream, Oatmeal and PBJ Sandwiches. It was 110 degrees in Dallas Texas, where they were filming and the FX team had to put an AC unit inside the suit to prevent Weller from passing out. The stop motion animation effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Phil Tippet, whom did VFX for Star Wars, JURASSIC PARK, Starship Troopers, Cloverfield and the Twilight Saga. The film was a box office success, making $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget. It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.

The animation was a combination of stop motion and green screening the effect in. There were some full size models and parts to use in some scenes as well. The bullet effects are how it used to be done. There were small charges called squibs under a blood pack and they were set off electrically. They did seem to use rather strong ones in this movie. The jumping around when getting hit was also old school theatrics common in 80s action movies. Another thing was how often they racked the slides on their shotguns. Robocop's face wasn't real but something they made. I've wondered about the eyes though.

How quickly people forget. CGI came later. This was all practical effects and Ed209 was animated with good old stop-motion. Legend has it that Robocop still holds the record of the most exploding blood backs used. If you want some old fantasy movies with great stop-motion animation, Ray Harryhausen was the best. The stories are relatively basic, but the monster? They were state-of-the-art for their time. Put simply; I love it! TO THE GRENADE QUESTION: The only way to disarm an active grenade is to remove the fuze. That's the part that gives the time until detonation (usually 3 to 5 seconds). The easy part: to remove the fuze, you simply have to unscrew it like taking out a threaded lightbulb. The hard part: the aforementioned 3 to 5 seconds until detonation. Basically, if you have an armed grenade by your side, you are F(quack sound effect)ED.

The "Squib" work is excellent in this. That's the little explosive blood pouch they put under the clothes to make gunshot wounds. Squibs.

This is one of my desert island movies. You can only put the pin back into the grenade if the spoon/lever(the metal thing Clarence pops off) are still on the grenade. The pin is what holds the spoon in place, you can remove the pin and hold the spoon down and the grenade will not detonate, but once that spoon is popped off the grenade, that starts the fuse and there isn't any stopping it at that point.

Its good that you are stepping outside of your comfort zone. I heard from most good comedians that they hate performing in Belgium. So maybe that is also a avenue for you to concider.

One of the many things they did well in this movie was hire Basil Poledouris to do the score. He was a true maestro and you've likely heard his work in other movies but his masterpiece will always be *Conan the Barbarian*. You should check it out so you can see a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in what amounts to a fantasy opera!

I remember watching this at the theater back when it came out. Back then, watching a movie was a family event. We plan ahead of time like a mini-vacation over the weekend. I remember the movies coined the term Summer Blockbuster. It was a special time in the year where movies like this would be there. It was meant pure enjoyment. Not really for engaging movies. It was so great.

Once again... the eighties. Movies, music, golden era. Robocop is violent as it must be. Peter Weller suffered a lot wearing that Robocop suit, it was heavy as far as I know. But it was a real thing, your eyes nows that, so you don't find it unreal. Cinema has lost wat made movies like this great and timeless. Your reactions are great, always !

The pin of a grenade holds down the spoon, the spoon holds down a spring lever with a firing pin. When the spoon comes up the spring sets off a cap like the thing that fires a bullet but this one sets off a fuze inside a metal tube that ends in a blasting cap that sets off the grenade. The delay is from the fuze and it's like 3 to 5 seconds. So you can put the pin back to hold down the spoon but once the spoon has come loose and the cap has lit the fuze there's nothing you can do. Not all grenades have pins and spoons but it's pretty common.

There used to be a live action TV show of RoboCop. In one scene he looked up a criminal who is also a doctor in the system. I do not remember the last name but for the sake of the joke they intended let's say it was Murdoch. So when Robo looked him up the screen read the following: Murdoch, Cray Z. Dr.

WOW! you've really evolved in terms of your ability to handle violence in movies! as a kid, that opening scene where murphy died was pretty freaking traumatic for me lol! but you totally got the gist of the movie... really over the top violence but there is a big undercurrent of satirical humor. that was a completely fictional grenade but on a real grenade, pulling the pin is step one, the second step is the "spoon" disengaging and flying or falling off. if you hold down the spoon and the pin is out, you can put the pin back in and the grenade is safe. if the spoon has already disengaged, there's nothing you can do but throw the grenade or run away.... or... y'know... get blown up. but grenades are NOT THAT EXPLOSIVE lol. hollywood ALWAYS get grenades wrong. the primary effect is not a gigantic explosion but a swarm of shrapnel. explosions are very very limited by size. you simply can't have a house shattering boom with something you can toss with your hand. that's why nuclear bombs are so revolutionary - you can do VERY disproportionate explosions in a way you could not before it.

Robocop and Terminator go together like peanut butter and jelly as a double feature. A crossover would have been fun. Yes, I know, someone always says they fought in a comic book. I have that book, and it's fun, but what fans really wanted was Peter Weller in the suit, and Arnold in the leather jacket and sunglasses slugging away at each other, throwing each other through walls, chasing each other with cars, and causing lots of property damage.

This movie goes deeper than just being a satire for giggles. From sci-fi point of view it's also thoughts inducing about whether it's a person who's trying to remember himself, or if it's a machine that dreams it used to be a person...
