Two top tier robots from two top tier industry leading companies. iRobot is a US born and bread company with over 30 years experience, however things have changed in the market over the last decade. Competition from companies like Roborock have given iRobot a very big challenge. iRobot has leaned on 20 year old patents and name recognition to get them by with 20 year old patented technology. Have they fallen behind the competition? The short answer is sadly yes.
In this video I put the Roborock S7 MaxV+ against the iRobot Roomba Combo J7+ in a head to head 10 category battle.

Great video, I absolutely think the Roborock is better out of these two. Another difference is battery life, the Roborock has a much larger battery. Also, if you want to spend a little more you can get the ultra dock for the Roborock S7 Max which will empty the bin, and wash the mop pad, nothing like that is available for the Roomba. With the upcoming S8 models from Roborock, they will be using a dual roller system similar to what the Roombas have, combine that with Roborock's better navigation and more powerful vacuum motor and it should be better than any Roomba. Irobot really needs to come out with something new, they have already fallen behind and will continue to do so if they don't, companies such as Roborock, Ecovacs and Dreametech have already gotten ahead of them. Another bot I'm interested in checking out is the upcoming Robovac X9 from Eufy, I have their X8 model and it is excellent.

Thanks Mike! I did this video as a bit of a wake up call for iRobot (if they are listening) and people looking at buying an iRobot just based on Marketing and the fact they are sold in big box stores. Amazon should revamp them and quickly if the deal goes through. I am interested in the X9 as well. How does Eufy compare to Roborock?

@@jamie.andrews I honestly cannot think of a time when I would recommend a Roomba at this point, they are just too far behind. A friend of mine recently was looking to get a robot and she asked for some suggestions. She really wasn't interested in a self empty bin and she didn't need the mop feature, I suggested either the Roborock Q5 or the Eufy Robovac X8, she chose the Roborock Q5 and she is very happy with it. The Eufy Robovac X8 is the only robot vacuum I know of that has two vacuum motors instead of one, I don't have any pets but apparently it is well known for its ability to clean up pet hair. Eufy has it on sale right now I think and you may want to get it, it doesn't have a self empty bin but the dust bin holds more than most other robots and it's navigation is also really good, it also seems to have more airflow than a lot of other bots, you don't hear the vacuum motors as much with it but you definitely hear the airflow.

Having ownd four iRobot vacuums and maintaining them on a weekly basis and keeping them clean, lubricated, and parts replaced when needed , plus modifying the robot so it does not mark up all of the baseboards with black streaks from the constant bumping, unless they make changes and keep up with the industry , I will not be replacing them with another iRobot. Your review was professional and fair and I thank you for sharing your tests with the rest of us.

I robot makes a J7+ Combo that vacuums and mops. The also sell a separate mop as well if you want to go that route, but I suggest 1 robot that does both. Hi Jamie. Thanks for the video. I've preordered S7 MaxV standalone mostly for its object recognition functions and being "smarter", but I'm a bit worried about the water tank capacity. Does it make a big difference that it's only 200ml? Would it be OK to use it without the dust emptying dock (I'm considering to maybe buy it later, but it's not cheap...)... I was also considering Q7 Max+, but it seems to lack some features. Thanks in advance.

Great comparison of these robots. I had my grandparents for a visit yesterday, and they were fascinated by my Roborock S5 Max, since it does a way better job at cleaning, than the robot they had back when I was a child. I suggested to them, that they could get a robot similar to mine, but since they are seniors, and mostly goes at home, and can clean their home on their own, it's not something they need right now. My robot cost 2.649 dkk, when I got it and that's about 355,66€ I think, if Google is right 😁

Fantastic review! It would definitely help me to make a decision. That said, I'd also like to see comparisons between tiers. I just bought an S7 Plus after doing much research. I bought on the tier though as I wasn't willing to pay the delta, at least with what I could tell. Was that a mistake and should I have looked at the Max? Hard to say without that tier up and down comparison.

Royal, thanks for your kind words! The main difference is the MaxV has object avoidance. In the software it can do routines as well, but that is no huge Plus. The MaxV is also compatible with the Ultra dock. With that said if you do not need object avoidance, then you are perfect with the S7 plus. You did give me an idea for a new video! Ty!

I had the J7+ (not combo) and now the S7 Maxv with the auto emtpy doc (not the ultra dock). The J7 was better at cords, but I could not handle the horrible mapping without Lidar. It would constantly mess up the map with non-existant walls, navigation errors - going into an adjacent room then turning around to go back, missing spots and it's object avoidance gives way too much space around an object. Adding a room was time consuming. It took me days to get a halfway decent map. With the S7 it took one evening. I like having an actual voice over that of the chimes of the J7. Watching it vacuum through the S7's camera is also fun. If the J7 had lidar, I would have kept it. But The S7, to me, is the winner of the two.

I could care less that Roomba will take 20mins longer to clean with its VSLAM compared to Lidar, im not the one doing the cleaning. S7 MaxV on sale in Canada is $1500, the Roomba J7+ combo on sale is $1000. Roborock is not $500 better. Try dealing with Roborocks customer service when something goes wrong, good luck.

I have the S7 maxv, I like it..But there are some areas where it has plenty of room for improvement. 1. It is terrible at detecting cords and wires. This is important for me and from what I understand the roomba j7 is much better here. 2. As of now, there is no way to dump the dustbin in the middle of a cleaning run. It’s baffling that they don’t have this feature. 3 the side brush gets completely tangled in high pile shag carpet. They should either redesign the side brush or allow for a way for it to turn off over high pile carpet.. I actually have an older roborock i7 and it’s sidebrush does not tangle in the same carpet 4..The single rubber roller I have noticed does not seem to pick up pet hair as well as my older i7 on low pile carpet. I would expect the S8 to see a big improvement here, But I think that roborock should also sell different types of rollers that should perform better on these types of carpets

#2 is a patent held by iRobot which is why only they can have dirt detection in the bin. #3 the S8 has a new redesigned sidebrush.

@@jamie.andrews From my understanding the patent is only for the full bin level detection. As it is, there is no way to manually dump the bin during a job without canceling it, or putting it on like a timer as the mop wash is.. Once you send it to dump, it cancels the job

Amazon prime day I got a J7 for $350. To spend over $1,000 is just crazy. The value of roborock is not there considering discounts. And it tells you how much of a mark up is on these vacuums. Way over priced. Considering Design, Robo is too tall limiting the ability to go under some furniture and most importantly my bed frames. Plus I like the slim design feature of J7 dock that can fit easily under a table keeping it out of the way.

It is amaizing to see a better review still be full of shit. J7 combo is god for carpet and when you would actualy let it test somting more real you would see its the best of all. Carpets get dirty with light objects like fiber from cloas small debre and what is when your carpet is used and stept on so its flat on some spots. J7 combo will defenetly do a better job and no I dont own the other. I would like to see any other than roomba clean a used carpet it wont happen. Roomba because of the 2 brushes and the agresive gruves that the new model of the other model that is shown doesent have it eather. It has to be better at cleaning carpets but it wont upen up used carpets you can belive me. Even J7 combo needs to have 2 - 4 passes to get 100 clean but it can do that and after 4 passes the carpet is open up again. Even 30 jears old carpet is opened up and I dont see how that new design of thouse rollers would do that. Roomba uses hard edhes to open up carpet so I would realy like to see when the other can do that to. I dont think it can. Again it can for shure clean better than with one roller but that it is. And the J7 combo has a light. It has no problem to go around in the dark. When you would use it after it makes the map it does look to move a litle diferent and after some passes true the day it can operate in the dark like in the day. The cleaning with the mob is sorry bulshit. When you leave sucb mess you realy have a problem. I seen stains tested and when the robot detects its dirty it would make some funny moves. Moving foverd and back spinning but it would clean up. Its realy not so bad than alot of the reviews showd. And carpet test should be done with some light fabric in to the miks and on old carpet and lets see how long it takes to get close to roomba. Some rewievers did that and Roomba was always the best because ot the 2 mehanical rolers. The suction on the J7 combo is aperently bad but it some how makes a inprint of the first filter on the dust so how it isent good ? Because the mehanical motion does the job on carpets you dont need the suction and the suction isent good enought on carpet or why you have to make multiple passes with a normal one. You lusen the debre with mehanical motion. And J7 combo will never get stuck on carpet all other do not shure on the one in video but you can faind testers that actualy test all the aspects and Roomba is the only one that doesent what a suprise, thats why it lifts the mob up. Thouse tests with rice or what ever on carpet are realy a joke and 1% better what does that mean. When you want to buy one of the robots there are better rewievers who actualy test on the same fild and try to include all aspets like one who reviews normal one to not only robots. The bigest problem with the J7 is the corner cleaner that spins to fast and scaters debre. Which is actualy a big problem but usely its a mention or even doeaent get mentioned even in videos that want you to sell a competeter robot. The other is good to and I thought it is a better product but when you actualy look up more reviews the Roomba has a lot of strengts. One problem is that it has problems with rooms or layouts that are similar and it doest know in which room it is. The other I dont know but laidar isent as good as people belive and in tests that were the same there was no big leep. The other Roombas that dont have a camera that is as good as the j7 como have problems.

@@jamie.andrews so why should I need to try one tgere is somting caled YT and there is enought rewievs. Would it be better when J7 would had laidar who knows ? The maps laid by laidar are compleatly f... up. But it makes the robot able to adapt and manuver better but it realy dosent help when your 1000 eur robot gets to play with scho laises and cables. But one thing is the J7 better carpet better than eny other robot even opening a old carpet that was stept on for decades. And only so you can clean the carpet or you wash it. RoboRock doesent care abot some object like the 2 already mentioned. So its not so perfect and you cant send it to a place to clean it specificly. People watching thouse videos want to be informed and not misinformed which includes to exclude information. Thats why it simply is didinformation.
