This bionic hand is controlled by an Arduino Nano V3 and uses 4 15kg servo's to move the index, middle, ring and little finger and 3 9g servo's to rotate the thumb and pull the thumb and the fingers open. This bionic hand it's structure is modelled after my hand so I could make a gel10 mold that would fit snug around it. I originally wanted to integrate some force feedback in the finger tips by using some small pushbuttons but that didn't turn out to well because the wires from the pushbuttons in combination with the gel10 mold caused to much friction in the joints of the fingers and the fingers had to push to hard to activate the pushbuttons. I'm now going to do some tests with current sensors so I can measure the current going to the servo's and when the current goes above the normal level then the servo's would stop (that's the idea).

So awesome. They say the human body works on electrical impulses. Wouldn’t it be great if A) a prosthetic hand like this could somehow be interfaced to one’s mind - so that it was controllable like a real hand? B) if sensors for touch and heat, etc could somehow also be “wired up”, allowing perhaps even a rudimentary sense of feel?

Hello Teri, this is a great idea! However this is just a prototype. I would have to make a lot of modifications for it to be durable enough to be used on a dailly basis and in a lot of different scenarios. The curent model wouldn't fare to well in these type of applications. If you do want to replicate this, I've writen a Hackaday page about this project with all the details you need like schematics, parts and materials used, Arduino code,... . @BrianBrocken
@BrianBrocken 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a few things i would change now: 1. Each joint of the finger is articulated by a string. I positioned the string to close to the pivot point between the joints which gives you a lot less leverage which results in the fingers having a very weak gripping force. Try to position the string as far away from the joints as posible to get the most amount of leverage so you can achieve the highest gripping force possible for each finger. 2. If you're going to build a prosthetic for real world applications try to build it as strong as possible while still remaining light weight. My design is a little to flimsy to be used in real world applications. Try to use strong and lightweight materials like aluminium and carbon fiber if you have the ability to do so. 3. Maybe the most important one, design the prosthetic with the user in mind. Try to make it as convenient as possible for the user, Try to make the battery last as long as possible, figure out how how the battery can be charged as easily as possible, make the prosthetic waterproof, maybe the user is a maker just like us so try to add a toolchanger onto it so his prosthetic can be a hand and a drill at the same time idk 🤷‍♂️. Just ask the user how they intend to use it and custom fit the prosthetic to their needs.

Thank you Mete Güngen! I designed this bionic hand in autodesk 123d design but unfortunately autodesk stopped with the support of the 123d apps including autodesk 123d design. You can still find the program if you look hard enough but it may be unstable and may crash or don’t work at all. So now I’m using fusion 360 for all my projects. The program takes some getting used to but in the end it is far more better than autodesk 123d design. Fusion 360 is also free. Hope this helps ;-)

it was painful for me to watch this as it was constructed without an 'opposable thumb. As it is, it can't grab anything.

The thumb can in fact do grab things (I didn’t operate the rotation servo in the video). The thumb has 2 servo’s (1 push pull and 1 to rotate it) and can touch every finger on the hand. I’m going to make a demo video of the hand grabbing things and attach a muscle sensor to it. Maybe you can build a better bionic hand as you clearly know it better. You can always send me the link to your video where you show your improved robot hand :-)
