Favourite Bigger Brother victory has to be against Tornado. Tornado having won the UK championship were beaten very convincingly.

That sense of catharsis seeing Tornado go out to Bigger Brother, after their highly dubious winning of the UK championship against Razer, makes me content.

The """win""" against Razer was complete bullshit. It wasn't fair. They deserved the pit of shame and despair. Fuck Tornado.

I don't think Bigger Brother's ever had a more impressive victory than its win over Hypno-Disc. I don't even think winning the Minor Meltdown Championship was on the same level or defeating Chaos 2. It's great that the Watts family won at least one trophy and were the ones to end Chaos 2's winning streak in the UK Championships, but here they were against the toughest opposition they'd faced; they were getting the shit smashed out of them, their flipper broke, they looked like they were fucked, and yet they kept alive and fighting on long enough to get a push from behind Hypno-Disc to shove it down into the pit. How the innards still held up through all of that punishment is beyond me. Of course Hypno-Disc could've just backed away from that end of the arena and just left Bigger Brother going in all directions (good thing Team Razer were smart enough to realise that), but it's not like Hypno-Disc clumsily drove onto the edge and got a nudge - Bigger Brother still had to push the latter down, which it did in spite of all the damage it sustained. It unfortunately sucks that because of this we couldn't see the battle between Razer and Hypno-Disc that many wanted, but I give credit where it's due.
@reyzorisk27833 жыл бұрын
agreed, the minor meltdown to me was strictly built for them to win because the competition there was not that great.
@ryanodonovan94973 жыл бұрын
@@reyzorisk2783 No tournament is built strictly for anyone to win, as predictable as it may have been for Bigger Brother to win the Minor Meltdown Championship. Having a tournament for children was just something Robot Wars hadn’t yet done. Well, Nickelodeon Robot Wars had a bunch of them, but there didn’t need to be all these child equivalents to what the adults could win. And that series made almost every competition smaller, took away the use of fire, called Sir Killalot “Sir K” - basically insulted children’s intelligence. The Minor Meltdown Championship was a way to do a children’s tournament right without being so pandering. Team Big Brother had quite an advantage in that they were more experienced and accomplished, but you can’t have a tournament for children and _not_ include Bigger Brother. In the end, its victory was only natural.

I cannot think of a bigger comeback in robot combat than Bigger Brother vs Hypnodisc. Bigger Brother was so smashed up you couldn't even tell which way was forwarded, yet they still clawed back and somehow stole the win from nowhere. Ellie only makes this fight better, showing the roller coaster of emotions that the team felt. Despite watching this fight so many times that I mutter the JP commentary in my sleep (that's an exaggeration... I hope), the fight never gets old and I still feel all the same emotions I did when I first watched it.
@s113333 жыл бұрын
I think JP's best commentary moment was at the very end of the fight with the "You've done it, You've won it" line. Although as a diehard Hypno Disc fan, a part of me still wishing that they had won that fight.

Is the Bigger Brother win vs Hypno-Disc the first "let a spinner hit you until they wear themselves out" win in Robot Wars?
@advancedsimplicity53563 жыл бұрын
Effectively, yeah. In close quarters, a spinning blade can't spin up to speed, making it effectively useless. A+ driving skills from Team Bigger Brother.
@actionman94513 жыл бұрын
Technically yes, because too many impacts with a spinner can actually damage the spinner itself because with some spinners power can be too strong and make the robot loose control doing damage to itself or too many with other bots could break the spinner and stop it from spinning. So that’s why some bots have thicker armour to weaken a spinner’s power and will basically use the armour to ware the spinner out then go in to finish the job.

My second favourite flipper bot ever next to Wheely Big Cheese. They could put up a really good fight. That match against Hypnodisc was incredible. His disc could cut through everything and I mean EVERYTHING.
@kapilbusawah71693 жыл бұрын
It was luck, brains and sheer will to not die that gave BB that win over hypnodisc. The only enemy of hypno was its confidence which quickly went to arrogance. BB played it beautifully from the start. Using the toughest part to absorb the energy of the disc with minimal damage I think was their plan and wait till the disc has to charge again then strike. BB had the strats and the will to continue. Much respect.

The hypnodisc fight was incredible. As Hypno has to cut its drive motors to restart the disc spin after a hit, BB going in backwards so the disc rotates BB forward on hit to capitalise on Hypnos cut engines was a great innovative strategy.

People often talk about the Series 4 iteration of Hypno-Disc being most likely to win if not for David Gribble's driving. For my money, I'll always look back and see the Series 5 version as having had the best chances of winning. In an age where armour was only getting tougher, it was still able to dish out some serious damage (such as ripping Atomic's flipper clean off) or doing crucial damage to the innards of another robot to stop them dead (such as chopping out Bulldog Breed's safety link or one-punching Firestorm). By all accounts Hypno-Disc should have won that fight against Bigger Brother, if not for that greatest of Robot Wars equalizers, the Pit Of Oblivion. Even though I know the result I *still* watch that fight and marvel at how quickly the tide turned for a machine that looked set to finally win the tournament, and give the fans the match everyone wanted to see (Hypno-Disc vs Razer). That Bigger Brother still had full range of movement and could push Hypno-Disc down the pit with a broken flipper is a real testament to the supremely sturdy construction of that machine. It could take the most brutal of punishments and pull quite possibly the biggest upset in the show's history. If a Series 5 Campaigns/Episodes video is done, the Grand FInal and Bigger Brother's campaign surely have to place in the top 3.

As an aspiring presenter, I really want a TV station like BBC to take on Robot Wars again and bring it back. It deserves screentime. Maybe even trial a Robot Wars: Champions Of Champions series where finalists, semi finalists and champions from the last 10 series is brought back to compete to be the best of all time. The return of Chaos and Bigger Brother and Razer and Hypno-Disc, competing with Carbide and Apollo, etc.

You ain't wrong. Bad driving, bad tactics, Hypnodisc overextended itself too far and left itself open to the pit.
@alexwilliams58193 жыл бұрын
@@advancedsimplicity5356 Dave Rose’s tactics in the latter stages of series 5 still baffle me even now. Against Dominator 2 he takes the easy judges decision to reach the Grand Final when I honestly think one more hit would have completely immobilised Dominator. Then in the GF Eliminator he decides “I’ll keep attacking Bigger Brother even though I’ve torn enough damage into them which if it goes to the judges we’ll win easily” thus wearing his own machine out. Hypno-Disc and Razer were IMO the 2 most destructive robots in the original series but only one of them married that destruction with pragmatism which won them a boatload of trophies

As a kid I just thought BB got lucky. As a more expert combat robot fan, I now say that HD had a good start but was poorly driven halfway into the match. How can you keep hitting the back when it clearly does not affect the internals? Especially when you are clearly the more manoeuvrable bot.

Superior driving throughout the whole fight and realising the pit was their only chance to win. So tactics and skill not luck
@Olip873 жыл бұрын
Backing into the disk when it was at full power to slow it down then moving in with the flipper was not luck. Great play.
@CatacombD3 жыл бұрын
The disk stopped spinning because Bigger Brother kept absorbing its blows with their heaviest armor. The problem with disk/spinner bots is that, while extremely destructive, their main weapon takes a lot of damage if it hits something heavy enough to stop it. When they fight a weakly armored bot, they shred them, but if you throw a bot built like a tank at them, they break themselves. BB sacrificed everything they had to disable the spinner, then used their superior maneuverability and torque to pit HD. At the end of the day, they won because of superior tactics, driving, and construction; the best kind of victory.
@emirlsanchos63023 жыл бұрын
@@Olip87 And their strategy pays off around the 4:35 mark. The disc's velocity dies down and the engine powering it soon gives up altogether by the time the pit opens. The weapon dealt significant damage but the impact of those hits put a strain on the mechanism.
