This is a great example of their intelligence. He did all the tests with his friends to see what’s wrong with this tortoise until they came to the conclusion that is it not real, it is an amazing toy. The protective behavior you see in chimp baby is identical to what you see in other baby chimps and even human toddlers when you try to take away their favorite toy after they have identified it.

And to be fair, the tortoise looks extremely real. Anyone who's seen in real tortoise would know. They are not the most lively of animals, but he was able to recognise how a real tortoise would likely react and so he didn't treat it like one.

Chimps are largely visual creatures, and their reaction to it being unusual seemed to be based on sight and even more so on touch. There was very little difference between the processing here and that of a human. The main difference being that the chimps would have only gone as far as identifying that it was different, and then losing interest, whereas humans would have gone on to take it apart and try to understand it in more detail.

Y’all keep saying stuff like “imagine if this was a real tortoise” and “it the tortoise was real I’d feel sorry for him” but like, the chimp clearly knows that it’s not a real animal. He touched, sniffed, and licked it. He isn’t stupid. It’s just a really cool toy that he wants to himself. If it was real he wouldn’t be swinging it around by the neck like that, especially since it’s a tortoise and he would be in his shell before the chimp had a chance to do serious damage.
@lancetschirhart7676

When I found a tortoise out in the forest, I touched, sniffed, and licked it just to make sure it was real, and now it's my pet. So I don't see your point. But seriously, the idea that a chimp can tell the difference between a genuine and artificial tortoise-- or even can reason about the abstract concept of artificiality, is giving him way too much credit. He just thought it was different from what he had seen so far.
@lancetschirhart7676
@lancetschirhart7676 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, I licked it all the way home. Lick a tortoise - thank me later. Then sniff the shit out of it. That's the most important part of behaving inappropriately toward the tortoise.

@@lancetschirhart7676 He doesnt need to know it's an artificial tortoise. He just knew it wasn't an animal. Besides I dont even understand why people are getting upset. I think they forget we literally kill and eat other animals in a cruel way so like we are probably not best fit to judge the behaviour of a child chimp.

There are videos of chimps fucking, slamming, and chewing down on live small animals to death for fun; they don't even eat them sometimes, it's literally for entertainment for them. Chimps don't give a fuck if that is a real animal or not, I could easily see them turning a real tortoise into a toy to swing around and drop.

Everyone’s talking about if the tortoise was real, but I got the impression that the chimp realized it wasn’t a “real” animal, and that’s why it was so confused by it. They sniffed it and observed it and probably got the vibe that something wasn’t right. I could be wrong though.
