We could soon see AI-powered robots taking over several jobs in Canadian grocery stores. Richard Southern with how a labour strike in one part of the country could have nationwide implications.

Can’t really expect IQ from Canadians. You know what third world means? It had nothing to do with development. Third world was term for countries that neither aligned with west nor did they align with with soviets. And a lot of those so called less developed countries have better infrastructure than your Canada. The reason you see immigrants moving to different parts of the world is because of high population density in their native countries which in turn leads to a fierce competition. I lived in Canada 8 years and moved back to India. Canada really has a poor infrastructure and low quality jobs. No real productivity in your labour force, no innovation and low wages with high cost. And don’t blame immigrants for high cost of living, this has been a issue in your country for over 5 decades. We in India have better cities snd infrastructure than you. And, you probably don’t know that India has cities like you and probably better because your media has been fooling you since eternity and making you believe that you live in a paradise. You live in a fool’s paradise.

@@FabioMouro Self checkouts in some stores were the only options for those of us mask exempt to buy groceries since cashier's wouldn't deal with us. Robots stocking shelves is just pure job takeover. Just like how I don't eat at Boston pizza since they rolled out the robot waiters, Im not going to buy from a store that hires robot shelf stockers

I think we should develop AI and robotics to improve people's lives. Unfortunately, most businesses are developing AI and robotics to eliminate jobs which will have the opposite effect on people's lives.

Companies should have to pay a tax equivalent to the wage of the person these robots replace. This tax then be administered to those who loss their jobs. These companies pull in record profits yet still look for ways to pull in more profit by eliminating a workforce.

@@JNisHIScr8nthis is a hilarious take. If you have ever taken a family check did you feel imprisoned by the government? I don’t see anyone needing government subsidies like welfare, or disability, imprisoned by the government. A UBI will be no different. You’re more imprisoned at your job. You’re selling your time to them for WAY less than it’s worth. Then they deduct WCB, EI,tax, CPP and benefits. Jobs are going way regardless of your opinion and resistance. Robots are WAY easier to exploit and cost WAY less than a human. Big business only cares about big business. You job, everyone’s job is replaceable. Like it or not UBI is a good option.

Looks like these robots are moving at turtle speed! Can they clean up a spill, say hello to a customer or help them find a product? If this actually starts happening in some grocery stores, lots of people will stop shopping there! Lots of people dont use self checkouts because it takes away jobs. To keep this from happening just boycott these places and they will start losing millions and be forced to go back to normal. Taking away lower class jobs that most people dont want but lots of people need will detrimental to society!

I work at a grocery store and no a robot CAN'T replace humans 😂. While doing a rotation on a shelf (if they are even able to do it while respecting expiration dates), they would probably make everything near the product they're moving fall. Those robots are SLOW🐌 so by the time they filled an isle it would be half empty. Those robots probably can't make isles look nice✨ and they might not know how to handle damaged products. Is there strength💪 gonna match the weight of the product ( a 24 water bottle pack / a bag of chips ). Can they remove expired products 🤔

@bayoubilly5176 I'm serious I saw a video couple of months ago. Maybe the batteries can't last more than a few minutes currently but look what we've seen in the past 70 years to 100 years plus. Aircraft, Mobile Phones, Cars, Humans going to space etc... Robots are gonna be the norm in like 50 to 100 years.

Grocery industry have already been investing in all areas of automation and for a long time including stocking shelves. This was always their plan anyways, to automate as much as possible, there are distribution centers already that are automated. This just accelerates their plan. This is what excess profits are used for. Let's see how far the working class can be pushed Around, eventually there's going to be a tipping point.

I was not lazy. I developed lower and middle back pain. Pain in my left thumb. Pain in my left knee. Pain in parts of my foot. This is all because of shelf stocking. My body is starting to wear out. I have been working as a retail shelf stocker for a long time. I could go in detail about what injuries at work that I had from the X-ray and ultrasound results, but that would take a long time to explain. I explain one thing for now: In regards to the left knee injury, I developed a permanent left partial knee ligament injury (shown on the x-ray and ultrasound) for life.

Been saying it for years. Now import more people with no skills and what jobs are you going to give them? Now you've got AI which does math, so how many more accountants and paper shufflers will I need? Japan has been full of vending machines for decades. They make pizza, fried chicken etc. If you have one of these jobs, you need to go to work, take the money and re-educate yourself. Screaming for more money is just bringing the inevitable faster and eliminating a transition period for yourself.

The only thing that will stop (or at least slow) the replacement of human employees by robots is if customers boycott those stores. I work in customer service and people HATE dealing with bots, phone trees and automated systems. All day I hear "Thank goodness I finally got a human!" Especially from elderly people - it's cruel to expect them to deal with a robot. You can make someone's day by chatting with them for just a minute or two, and that's how you get loyal customers. If you want more profit, give your customers a warm human experience. There's enough isolation and coldness in the world.

If what the National Post said is true, 33% of Canadians support euthanizing homeless people. Few understand they should be careful what they wish for. It doesn't take much for anyone to end up part of that demographic. But if people still insist, despite warnings, give them what they want. They deserve it.

This is very bad decision. Human beings should support each others. At the end are these robots pay the taxes? No correct? So how the government can help generate funds to run the program, schools and so forth. Government officials will raise the taxes even more. Humans will loose jobs So how it will help humans to survive. They will have to pay more taxes when they will have no job. It will break down the system. Open your eyes. Support human not machines.

That’s a bad idea they get arrested go to jail nobody will hire them because they have a criminal record and if they do get work at some job like an agency they will be paying damages to the robot or robots

Robots, like any other machine, will some day suffer age-related issues. Think down the road and try to anticipate when a robot will suffer what I call AD. Since we have artificial intelligence, could we not also have artificial dementia? Like, when a robot starts making all kinds of mistakes we haven't foreseen!🙄

that already happens, its called 'getting bugs or errors in your program'. the solution is regular updates and debugging. we already do this in every industry that makes use of automation...
