Robots are hitting some St. Louis, Missouri grocery stores! The Schnucks grocery chain has completed early testing and is now employing robots to check inventory in fifteen of its stores.
The robots, called Tally, are made by a San Francisco, California company called Simbe Robotics. Simbe is among one of the few American companies that have developed such a machine.
The robot goes from aisle to aisle in a grocery store, looking for gaps in the inventory. When it finds one, it checks an internal list, sees if there is more of the product in stock, then messages the store staff, telling them they need to restock the product.
Some are concerned this might be another case of machines replacing people in the workforce. Both Dave Steck of Schnucks and Maureen Milliken of Simbe insist that’s not the case.
“Tally doesn’t have arms,” Steck says. “It can’t stock items on the shelf. It’s a tool for the stores to use and help them focus on customer service.”
