Just enjoyed sitting behind you today, in the cloud painting lesson. Trying to get back into oil painting after years of absence; blocked emotionally for some unexplained reason. Have forgotten all I self-learned before, so it feels like I'm starting from scratch. I enjoyed your relaxed atmosphere, the smiles, humor, realism, and the GOD bless at the end. GOD bless you Rob. I'll add you to my prayer list. :) Jess Dixon

I've just started painting a few months back and I really appreciate the way you teach. Explaining all the small steps and breaking the painting into stages is very helpful. I'm especially grateful for the time you take to explain the colours you're mixing. Thank you!

That was well timed, I've got to do some clouds and I'm not too confident. Watching this video I think I've been using too much paint and ending up with a slippery mess.

So happy to hear this video may help you out with your current painting you have going. And absolutely, confidence is a key element. Of course it will take some time and practice to develop that confidence, but I always encourage students in my painting classes to paint boldly and confidently. Lingering in one area of a painting can be the downfall of a piece of artwork. If you get a chance to visit a museum with artwork from some of the old masters, get up close to one of the paintings, literally just a few inches away, and notice that there are visible brush strokes and even bristles still in the paint layers. That means they put one or two strokes and then left that spot. That's a result of confident painting. Keep up the practice and you will be building gorgeous clouds in no time. And remember to throw a little cad orange(and I really mean a small amount, don't go overboard with it) in there with your white. You will be stunned at how much warmth and sunlight that adds to a sky. Thank you so much for your comment by the way. So glad to hear this is helping out someone else. And thanks for subscribing. It really means a lot!

I'm really enjoying your demonstration on how to paint clouds. I understand the need for the orange with the white. Even when you paint the "white of the eyes" you generally do not use pure white. My question is not about the painting but about the color of your shirt. I have found that when painting you can get a true understanding of the colors you are using when you wear a black shirt, smock, or apron. Since the black will absorb the light you are not causing a reflective color to the canvas and the paints there on. Even wearing a white shirt, etc. will produce a false color because it tends to cast a white reflection on your colors. This is somewhat like the difference in the lighting in your studio. Let me know your thoughts. WF

I really like the way you are breaking up an entire painting into steps and indicating when it needs to dry. Do you go over the clouds with a large soft brush to soften every thing?
@RobReepArt
@RobReepArt 6 жыл бұрын
Ted Appel Awesome! I’m glad the format is working well. And in terms of my clouds and softening, it all depends on what style I’m going for in each painting. Sometimes I go softer with my edges, sometimes I like to use a palette knife and go more impressionistic. It just depends.

Thank you for this tutorial, it really helped me! I just have one question, do you let the sky color(background) get dry and then paint the clouds on, or do you paint them on top of a wet background? Thank you

Awesome!! I did not know to add orange to the clouds. It really did make them look warm. I am an acrylic painter. I haven't done oils yet. I bought a cheap set as a starter set but have not used them yet. What do you use, personally, as a paint thinner for oils?

I'm really enjoying your videos and the clouds were very helpful for me! Thank you! What brand of oil paint do you use?
@RobReepArt
@RobReepArt 6 жыл бұрын
Patricia Hess So happy to hear you are enjoying my video. I should be releasing another really soon. And in terms of what brand of oil paint I use: I typically use a combination of Grumbacher and Classico. But I'll be honest, I have on occasion used Georgian. I find it to be a very nice quality oil paint for the price.

I started painting again after more than 40 years off! I had all my old oil paints from back then but was a bit concerned about the fumes from turpentine etc. So, I decided to go with Grumbacher Max which are water miscible oils. I really like them but the man I have been taking lessons from gives me grief (good natured) about them...he uses Holbein which I know are a very good quality paint. Of course after investing in all the Grumbacher Max I find out that there are odorless turps now! I don't think anyone could tell the difference in the finished painting. I'm going to try your clouds on a landscape I am doing after the blue sky dries. Thanks again for informative videos!

Painting is a lot like sewing. You have to be patient. I paint with acrylics and have never tried oil. Thought I'd drop in and see what it's all about. So far I think I'll stick with acrylics.

Thank you so much Rob! I’ve been painting in oil’s and don’t know much about the others, but I gave it up about 10 years ago when I had to look after family members. I’ve just bought an easel and some pants and some thinners and some Other supplies. I watched your video and clouds here and it’s giving me a lot more courage to go ahead with the painting I plan to do. Thank you so much for this video has my plant painting has a lot of clouds in it and I didn’t really have confidence in doing them my canvas is primed and I’m going to paint the blue sky in the morning. Can you tell me what colours you used for the blue sky? I really want this painting to take life and I think this is the best way I’ve ever heard of to do clouds.Thank you so much for posting this video. All the best to you-Terry Christen in Canada!

I am a major beginner but learned the little I know from a local artist who followed Bob Ross and Bill Anderson anyway it's wet on wet which of course I don't understand the difference, you let things dry which would be better I think for a beginner because I can't do a full painting as is done with wet on wet I think....your thoughts & i'll keep watching, thank you.....

Your orange shirt throws off the auto white balance on your camera constantly trying to adjust for it. I'd wear a black or white shirt on your next videos.
