The Bee Gees never considered themselves disco. They adapted to the music of the times and made it theirs. They were caught in the disco polemic because their success made them an easy target. They have proven over the decades that they were not bound to a specific genre and were just really talented musicians overall.

"Nights on Broadway", although not reaching the chart heights of its predecessor, introduced Barry Gibb's falsetto voice in the chorus. It was a turning point in Bee Gees style, as they progressed through their disco era writing songs mostly sung in falsetto by Barry. He did not know of his special "talent" until producer Arif Mardin asked someone within the group to try to do some kind of screaming during the main chorus. Barry had done some unsuccessful falsetto in songs like "Melody Fair" from the Odessa album. He gave it a try, and as a result this legendary falsetto became a hallmark of the Bee Gees sound. "Nights on Broadway" reached #7 on the US Billboard charts, giving the Bee Gees back-to-back top 10 hits for the first time in seven years (since 1968). DISCO 1975.

THANK YOUUUUUUU!!! Barry singing "Here We Are" wakes me up each morning. It's set on my alarm clock. This is one of their BEST. It is from the 1975 Main Course album. You hear Barry in grand chest voice then he and Robin in perfect unison before Robin puts down some serious higher range. Follow that with some fabulous harmony from all three. This is the first song where Barry actually used falsetto on the "blaming it alls." Amber is right, this is funk. They wanted to write a song about NYC, and it started out being "Lights on Broadway," but record executives wanted to "adult" it up a bit. The bridge is unbelievably delicious, ("even if it takes a lifetime") and no one does it better. The harmony is crazy outstanding. You hear Mo with high harmony and that outstanding bass playing. "Main Course" is perfect top to bottom. FYI, the brothers did this on "Midnight Special" in 1975. Because it was live, Barry couldn't sing lead and do the "blaming it alls" falsetto at the same time, so Mo did it. He was just great. All three brothers were unbelievable vocalists.

A quick "memory snapshot", that I recall is when my Literature class was QUITELY waiting for our teacher to arrive to the classroom, and nobody was talking. Then suddenly one of the guys on the back row, belts the opening line of this song, "Here we are", and me and a couple of the girls in the classroom quickly replied in tune, "In a room full of strangers"! Well of course the whole classroom burst out laughing, and in walks our teacher wanting to know what's so funny... Good Memories!

Producer Arif Mardin asked if any of the Bee Gees members could scream something during the main chorus to make the song more exciting. In response, Barry Gibb began to sing higher and higher and eventually sang it in a falsetto that was unexpectedly powerful. He had never known he had such a ability, and Barry's falsetto became a hallmark of the Bee Gees, although Maurice had harmonized in falsetto for years. I think Mo made the Falsetto live, bc Barry is singing the chest voice, but at the soundtrack its Barry, bc his falsetto is stronger!

I just came across a live perform of this entire song. Other performances have this song as part of a medley. I always thought it was Barry's falceto we were hearing at the end but it was Maurice! I watched him do it with my own eyes. I always knew Robin could sound just like Barry. I guess both twins learned to copy their big brother. We probably shouldn't be surprised to find out these guys were even more talented than we thought.

@@LouieLouie917 well Barry couldnt do it and sing normallyat the same time. Mo had a high voice but he didnt have the strength in it like Barry. You are absolutely right. It does not get much better than The Bee Gees. They are awesome. They have that tight harmony only siblings can do. They reinvented their sound and style a few times. Each one was great. Their early Beatles style, eg lonely days lonely nights, and those early balads, i started a joke, new york mining disaster, to love somebody, etc. Then their disco era where they took over the world. Stayin alive, night fever, you should be dancin, more than a woman, how deep is your love. Jive talking. They wrote so many great songs that other artists had hits of. Emotion. If i cant have you. Islands in the stream. Just awesome. One of the best and most dominant and influential artists of our times.

@@edalisauskas7313 Mo did the falsetto in the live because Barry couldn’t sing both the lead and falsetto. If you listen closely to the live vs studio versions there is a slight difference in the falsettos. All 3 brothers could sing falsetto but Barry’s was considered the most powerful. I do love Barry’s “chest” voice. It’s made for the funk and R&B.

The Midnight Special video is a live performance. Mo only did a few ad libs (nothing like the stdio version by the way), because Barry cant sing in his normal voice and falsetto layers at the same time. In this studio version Barry does all the falsetto. He was asked to scream in tune by the Producer and went back and recorded the falsetto layers on both this song and Fanny. This has been said numerous times in interviews. Funny though it sounds like Barry because it is.

Morris the multitalented and multi instrumentalist, was the brains behind this incredible song , he was so humble and he played organ , piano , guitar , bass, he was so underrated and he was the genius behind some masterpiece classics like : Nights On Broadway , Living Eyes , the Master Piece : Fanny Be Tender With My Love and others, he always kept a low profile, thanks for playing this masterpiece by The Bee Gees , always remember the quiet genius that passed away On 2003 , he was very young and an electronic Genius and Composer , the 4 brothers Gibb were amazing but 2 of them were real geniuses, the flashy Barry and the shy and quiet Morris the hidden genius behind this Master Piece and others , they were Awesome . The Bee Gees . If you watch the video where they are singing on the past Midnight Show , you will notice that it is Morris the one that plays Falsetto on this song , if you watch carefully the video for Fanny be tender with my love it is amazing to listen to these three doing the falsetto and reaching incredible heights with their incredible voices , they were just amazing .
