If you want more Johnny Rivers, try Secret Agent Man. The song was used in the 60's tv show Secret Agent.

Great suggestion. By the way, the show originally aired in the UK as 'Danger Man', but the song basically renamed the series in the US version

Those singers are Darlene Love, Jean King, and Fanita James - The Blossoms; may very well be the best back-up singers of all time. Beautiful. They backed up many singers in the '60's including many Johnny Rivers, Elvis, and Tom Jones. Darlene Love her own big hits as well some produced by Phil Spector.

So many 60's songs for you to hear. A few off the top of my mind are: "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" by the Four Seasons, "Groovin" by the Young Rascals, "Tell Her No" by the Zombies, "Go Now" by Moody Blues, "Because" by Dave Clark Five, "I've Got To Get A Message To You" by the Bee Gees, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by the Animals, "Daydreamer Believer" by the Monkeys, "The Air that I Breathe" by the Hollies and "Can't Find My Home" by Cream. Any Beatles song from their early albums. This is an eclectic group but the 60s had many styles from pop to harder rock as the decade progressed.

@@9drtr Thanks for that correction! As you mentioned Cream had lots of great songs. I didn't mention them as they were more progressive than the early 60s sound and it seemed to me that Amber was looking for a more early 60s or 50s pop/rock vibe. Anyway I'm sure at some point they'll be listening to Cream and Blind Faith.

This is my favorite for a reason. My dad was in a band. He was the drummer. He didn't sing anything. And this was the first song he sang every weekend I would go watch him. He passed away a couple years ago from colon cancer. I love this song because I can just think of him singing this. Much Love! Thanks.

This song was co-written by Johnny Rivers, (born John Henry Ramistella) and Lou Adler, and was released in August of 1966. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in November of 1966. Background vocals by The Blossoms: Darlene Love, Fanita James, and Jean King.

I agree with Jesse Diaz, "Slow Dancing, swaying to the music" is awesome. It's also the first song I dedicated to my wife (married 27 years now).

Johnny Rivers was an artist my older brother introduced me to in my single digit years in the mid 60's. Rivers is 78 now. The album he had (I still have it!) was 'Johnny Rivers Changes'. I didn't know it until years later, but the 'Changes' part of it was that he was a regular at 'The Whiskey A-Go-Go' on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, CA. singing, what was considered at the time pure hard rock & roll. It was considered antithetical to the 'squares' of the previous generation born in the 40's & 50's. When he did this 'Changes' album, he covered a dozen or so romantic ballads and 'love songs' like 'Poor Side of Town' (he wrote this song), 'Baby I Need Your Lovin', 'Tracks of my Tears', 'By the Time I get to Phoenix', 'Summer Rain' and, one of my favorites, 'California Dreamin'. He has a unique voice and vocal technique for sure. BTW... Rivers recorded the title song for the late night concert-influenced TV show 'The Midnight Special'. :)

I saw Johnny Rivers live back in the early 2000s at a Holiday oldies concert in Asheville NC called "The Jingle bell Hop". He puts on a great live show and was still touring up until the pandemic, hoping he returns to touring now.

Hey Rob and Amber, thanks for another great reaction! I certainly encourage you to try the other commenter's suggestions for Johnny Rivers' other great songs! But here's a group from that era that you may also want to check out: GARY PUCKETT and THE UNION GAP, with such timeless hits as LADY WILLPOWER, YOUNG GIRL, THIS GIRL IS A WOMAN NOW, and OVER YOU, to name just a few. Also, have you reacted to GLEN CAMPBELL yet? With memorable hits such as: WICHITA LINEMAN, GALVESTON, BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX, DREAMS OF THE EVERYDAY HOUSEWIFE, RHINESTONE COWBOY, and many more too! From the 1970's and early 80's, you probably will also like: BREAD (with lead singer DAVID GATES) with hits such as MAKE IT WITH YOU, EVERYTHING I OWN, IF (yes, it's a short title, isn't it?), BABY IM-A WANT YOU, DIARY, AUBREY, IT DON'T MATTER TO ME, LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE, and more! You'd also like almost any song by the artist LOBO, or the group AMERICA, or even THREE DOG NIGHT! And Rob, I know that BARRY GIBB is your man! But don't forget to check out more BARRY MANILOW, because you've already reacted to his song MANDY. Well, he's got a LOT of other great songs too! For something more uptempo from BARRY MANILOW, please check out his popular hit COPA CABANA, or the much less remembered song NEW YORK CITY RHYTHM... It will surprise you Rob! And Rob, there's another "Barry" that you might learn to appreciate as well: BARRY WHITE! Check him out, dude! Again, Rob and Amber, thank you so much for taking the time, and making the effort to listen to all these timeless OLD SCHOOL hits!
