Or at least some classic literature reference. Obviously Rime of the Ancient Mariner will be the first to come to mind for most. And it is EPIC, not a wasted, note, beat, syllable, Or second in that song. But it’s very long, & if you’re not familiar with the original poem, it may take time to appreciate the song . But others to consider: Where Eagles Dare. Phantom of the Opera Dune Murders in The Rue Morgue And many, many others

Specifically they are singing about the Battle of Great Britain in WW2, where they were under constant bomber attacks and the RAF fighter overcame overwhelming odds to win and keep England from being submitted. Iron Maiden is all about some historical songs written by Steve Harris (Bass), and Bruce Dickinson (Lead Vocals and pilot of their 757). Listen to Hallowed Be Thy Name, one of their all time great iconic songs

"Run to the Hills" is probably their most accessible song, if you want something that won't overwhelm Amber, but absolutely *rips*, and shows off why the lead singer got the nickname "The Air-Raid Siren". And on top of all that, it features the story of how the Plains Indians had their land taken away, told from three different perspectives: the Indians, the Army, and an outside narrator.

One thing to consider, is that all these early British metal bands grew up in the post-WWII England. They were the kids born after WWII and grew up in places like Birmingham, a seriously bombed city during that war. They probably played as kids in the rubble of destroyed buildings.

My husband has been a Maiden fan since the beginning. He introduced me to them when we started dating 12 years ago. They came to Texas in 2010 and he took me to see them 3 times in less than a week in San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston (our home). We saw them twice in Florida on our honeymoon! We also traveled to Tulsa a few years ago for a concert. Hubby's TV room is covered with Iron Maiden (and a few other metal bands) posters and collectibles. The boys in Maiden ages range from 63 to 70 now and they still put on a hell of a show!!

Bruce Dickinson is pretty F-ing amazing as a vocalist and performer... energy for days ! I read an article about Iron Maiden in which Bruce espoused his entire stage style in that he HAD to perform not only for the front rows but for the beloved fans waaaay back in the cheap seats... so he had to be bigger than life on stage and really sell it to the entire crowd and you can see it in his exaggerated actions and the poses of him and Steve Harris, the bassist in every performance.

Some of the best musicians in metal here. It's not just speed and power, which they have, but it's technical skill too--no wasted notes, even in the guitar solos. On top of it all, great production quality too. The story telling from Iron Maiden is top notch, as "Aces High" (and "The Trooper") show. I'll second the suggestions for "Wasted Years," "Run to the Hills," "Number of the Beast," and I'll add "Stranger in a Strange Land," which has some good variety/dynamics. Great reaction; thank you!

The Gods of Metal are appeased. Thank you for this one. What you have just experienced is Iron Maidens depiction of the POV from a British Spitfire pilot during the Battle of Britain, where Germany was Bombing London. These pilots went up to try and shoot down as many German Bombers as they could. The speech in the beginning is Winston Churchill (British Prime Minister During WWII) and i beleive he gave that speech in Parliament. Many of Maidens songs are based around Historical Myths or History itself. Flight of Icarus comes to mind. Thank you for the Smiles

Steve Harris (bass) of Iron Maiden, is the band's founder & wrote 'Aces high' in 1984... he plays Fender Precision bass (4-string) and his style of playing inspired countless heavy metal bands 🤘🤘🔥🔥Harris was inspired by 70's bands like Thin Lizzy and U.F.O. (both Lizzy's Phil Lynott and U.F.O.'s Pete Way were huge influences on his bass playing) and he also loved the complex arrangements of prog bands like Yes, Genesis and Jethro Tull... (Bassist Chris Squire of Yes was also a big influence). Iron Maiden was formed in London in 1975 by Steve Harris, after he had begun writing his own songs, but the band he was in found them 'complicated'... Harris put together the first band w/ friends he had made in the music scene, but he was constantly looking for new talent for Iron Maiden. In 1976, he was introduced to guitarist Dave Murray and was impressed by his skills - he offered him a spot in Maiden... Despite some turmoil w/ members, over the years, Harris finally stabilized the band's line-up by 1977 w/ Murray, drummer Doug Sampson & vocalist Paul Di'Anno (a 2nd guitarist proved elusive for a while). By 1978, Harris had written quite a few original songs (music & lyrics) and recorded a 4 song demo, which became a favorite in the London metal scene in 1979 and finally got Iron Maiden signed to a record label. Unfortunately, Doug Sampson was exhausted and quit for health reasons... Clive Burr (drums) joined w/ Dennis Stratton on 2nd guitar and they recorded the first Iron Maiden album in 1980. The musicianship of Iron Maiden had vastly improved since their club days, and the debut 'Iron Maiden' album brought Steve Harris' songs to full potential... vocalist Paul Di'Anno contributed some lyrics, but most of the songs on the first 2 Iron Maiden albums were compositions that Harris had written during their years playing clubs and bars in the UK - particularly impressive were the tracks 'Phantom of the opera'... 'Wrathchild'... 'Iron Maiden'... 'Murders in the Rue Morgue'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 Adrian Smith (guitar) replaced Dennis Stratton on 2nd guitar for the 2nd album 'Killers' (1981)... but Maiden's relentless touring caused vocalist Paul Di'Anno to burn out and he left the band that fall. After some consideration, Iron Maiden selected vocalist Bruce Dickinson to join the band for their 3rd album 'The number of the beast' in 1982... Smith also started to write material for the band, but it was Steve Harris' songs that stood out on the album - tracks like 'Run to the hills'... 'The number of the beast'... 'Hallowed be thy name'... Dickinson was a better vocalist than Di'Anno and his high range vocals & dramatic stage presence were perfect for Iron Maiden. In 1983, Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced Clive Burr, making Iron Maiden a sonically tighter heavy metal band... 4th album 'Piece of mind' benefited from songs being written by 4 members - Harris, Smith, Dickinson and (occasionally) Murray... Harris wrote 'The Trooper'... 'Where Eagles dare'... while Dickinson & Smith wrote 'Flight of Icarus'. For the 5th album 'Powerslave'(1984), Steve Harris wrote 2 standout tracks - 'Aces high'... and the epic 13-min song 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (which is a fan favorite) and Iron Maiden were headlining and selling out arenas all over the world on tour, going into 1985. Despite career ups & downs, Steve Harris has maintained Iron Maiden, and they are one of the top heavy metal bands worldwide today... Harris also started a solo band British Lion, that revisited his passion for 70's rock music.

I was waiting for Jay, being a bass enthusiast, to discover the mighty Steve Harris. One of the most influential bass players of all time, and my personal hero. The fact that he's also Iron Maiden's founder, chief songwriter and undisputed leader doesn't exactly make him less cool. And it doesn't hurt that he also remains so down to earth and sympathetic, even after decades as one of THE most important characters in heavy metal history.

Iron Maiden always does a great job of using the music in a song to put listeners mentally into the subject matter of their songs. Also, an Ace fighter pilot is one at or above a certain number of confirmed kills. I always felt like this song also conveyed the message that Britain had to have an air force of almost all aces in order to stave off an invasion by the Nazis.

I.M.'s hits album: "Best Of The Beast" is one triumph after another. Love channel! 🪂

If anyone asks you what heavy metal sounds like tell them, this. Maiden is easily the most popular metal band in the world and one of the top selling bands still touring. They sell out arenas around the world. I saw every tour in the 80s and early 90s. I hadn't them since then and a few years ago I went back for the first time and it was just as incredible as it had been all those years ago. One word of advise if you're old like me and haven't seen them in some time don't get floor seats. I should've known this but the ticket had a seat number, there are no seats on the floor of an Iron Maiden concert. Just a sea of humanity. Standing on concrete for three hours doesn't work anymore.

One thing that a lot of younger people maybe don't realize about bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and even Black Sabbath a few years earlier, is that they, and their audience are of the 'Gen X' generation (as am I), and we grew up with the ever-present spectre of nuclear war with the Soviet Union pervading the communal consciousness; the Berlin Wall was still up, inter-continental ballistic missiles were regularly talked about in the news, and most everybody in Europe fully expected that the Russian T-55 Tanks would come rolling thru the Fulda Gap in eastern Germany by the thousands, with a million Red Troopers behind them! We had the nuclear Sword of Damacles dangling over our heads all day, every day, so we drank, got high (it's true! Lots of good hash around for cheap back then!), and most of us scrawny pale Anglos rocked out to Iron Maiden and their ilk. Thankfully Gorbachev came along, the Wall came down, cocaine got too expensive, and we all outgrew our pensive youth and got jobs; and now Iron Maiden is a fond nostalgic throwback to the days of always being juuuust a bit paranoid 24/7... Also, Bassist Chris Harris was a founding member of the band, and wrote many of their tunes; he was widely regarded with awe for his dexterity and talent. And, he played a Fender P-Bass, then, and now, probably the most popular model electric bass, for good reason. I own 4 or 5 myself. Cheers!

Iron Maiden is one of the best metal bands that have survived the test of time. Bruce Dickenson, the lead singer is 63. Steve Harris, the bassist is 66. Dave Murray, the guitarist on left stage, is 65. The guitarist on right stage is Adrian Smith, who is 65. Jan Gers, who is the third guitarist, not in this video, is 65. And the drummer, Nicko McBrain is 70. These guys still tour with the intensity they had in the 80's. Which is no small feat. Steve Harris is the founding member on Iron Maiden, which formed in 1975. The other oldest member of Maiden is Dave Murray, who joined the band in 1978. Bruce, who joined the band in 1981, is also a jet pilot, who flies the bands aircraft, EdForce 1. In 2022, their tour consists of 44 concerts in 17 countries. Given their ages, that is phoenominal.

Steve Harris is the bass player and writes all the lyrics. Nico McBrain is the drummer and Bruce Dickinson is the lead vocalist. Dickinson joined the band in 1981 or 82 after Maiden vocalist Paul Deanno either quit or was kicked out. Maiden's first 2 albums are brilliant with Deanno singing. If you wanna hear some insane guitar playing check out Phantom of the Opera off Maiden's first record which is self titled.

Just to add something different, the bass Steve Harris is playing that resembles a Gibson Thunderbird is made by a high-end, Croatian born luthier based out of Toronto, Canada. Every guitar you see, is actually made by LADO Guitars. Steve is playing a model called "Unicorn Bass" and the funky angular guitar Adrian Smith is playing is called a Lado "Earth" guitar. Even what appears to a typical Dave Murray Fender Stratocaster, black with a white pickguard, is actually made by Joe Lado as well.

That was Winston Churchill's speech before the Battle of Britain & the "Aces High" were the British airmen who saved Britain. After the battle, Churchill said : “The gratitude of every home in our island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the world war by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.“ This was what the song was about.
