Hi Jay and Amber. Thanks for playing our song and the great review! What your hearing is the first generation of the Mini Moog. It has 3 oscillators that must be tuned manually which for a live performance can be challenging. It’s over 50 years old and is still taken out on the road and used. Roger had it split in half and created the first “keytar”. This instrument has also been featured on REO Speedwagon “riding out the storm”. Thanks again for the great review! Nathan - Head East P.M.

I got a whole new respect for this band years ago prob around the ear;y 90's. I lived in Liberty MO and a friend came by and said they were doing a concert at the community center. I called BS and so we went to check, weather was total crap and I don't think they advertised cause we show up and the place is empty. My buddy is convinced there gonna be there so we check and damned if he wasn't right. However there wasn't hardly anybody there mainly due to the crap weather. There was MAYBE 12 people there to see the show. The band came on stage, apologized for the weather and said, were here, your here, lets have a show. All 12 of us moved right up to the front of the stage and they played as if the place was packed full. Could have blown us all off and nobody would have been surprised, but they played for a handful of people and held nothing back. It was quite personal and awesome of the band. Mad respect...........................

Head East was a Illinois band, they only charted three songs (this one, my favorite of theirs, charted at #68), the others, Love Me Tonight (#54), and Since You Been Gone (#46). The solos were a pair of minimoog synthesizers, an early analog synthesizer. The band was popular in the Midwest, and came from the same general area as REO Speedwagon. On Never Been Any Reason, the drummer, Steve Huston sings the first half of the lyric, and lead vocalist, John Schlitt sings the second half.

It took some time for REO to break nationally too.

They charted much higher , Regionally. St.Louis, etc. There were several bands that had huge hits , regionally, but minor hits elsewhere in the country: Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Gypsy, MISSOURI, Mama’s Pride, Head East, Groups like REO Speedwagon, and Kansas did make it bigger Nationally. i would strongly encourage you to listen to the live version from their live album. it takes this song to a completely different level. the energy is off the charts. in fact, the first 3 songs (on the album) can be played at the same time since they play them like one big song. they start out with a cover of a song that you just reacted to by rainbow. "since you been gone" blends into "it's for you" and then right into "never been any reason". it is nearly impossible to play one of those songs without hearing all 3. love you guys. rock on

This was a party anthem in 1975 in central Illinois and the midwest. They came from St. Louis, the sound is a keyboard with a synthesized effect. They recorded this album in Pekin Illinois (outside of Peoria) about 50 miles from my home and when I was at Illinois State University they played our college and that night they walked on at a couple of local bars and killed it there as well. The album was called Flat As A Pancake and the other single that was great was Love Me Tonight. Later the song Since You Been Gone in 1978 was great too. Love these guys! Met the current lead singer’s wife at a free show they did last year for an all-class reunion. She got all the guys to sign my Flat As A Pancake album cover for me, and current guitar player Glen Bridger threw me one of his picks at the end of this song! Next you guys gotta check out Jefftown Creek from this same album, and If You Knew Me Better off their album A Different Kind of Crazy. 🙌💯

I remember going to see them in Denver and part way through the show there was a disturbance kinda backstage and they even stopped the song. Suddenly out onto the stage walks Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and company. They were passing through and decided to stop by and say hi to their friends. Stuck around and played 3 or 4 songs (I was pretty stoned so I can't remember exactly, but I know they played Black Dog and Stairway To Heaven). Totally rocked and what a night. Pay for Head East and get Led Zeppelin. It was epic

Although I grew up in the 80s on the east coast I never heard them on the radio (and I listened to a lot of radio). I never heard or hear them on classic rock radio here (Philly area) now either. I'm not sure how I even know of them but I heard this song somewhere along the line and not until the 2000s. I did however see a band play this after a baseball game but they seemed to play obscure stuff (or at least stuff that is somewhat obscure these days- another song they played was Stealin by Uriah Heep and you don't hear that song much either). So anyway, yeah not well known on the east coast but a good band.

Hey Jay and Amber!!! Like someone already said, that outer space sound you heard was synthesizer/keyboards. The second singer, the one Jay likes is John Schiltt. He later became the lead singer of one of the biggest Christian Rock bands to come out of the 70's, Petra. If you like his voice you should look in Petra. Early 80's and forward. While I'm on the subject, a metal that I think you would like is Called STRYPER! A Christian metal band that came out in the 1983. Killer vocals and guitar. I think you would appreciate their music.

That sound you are trying to place is a double track of a minimoog (an old analog synthesizer) solo. They recorded it twice and accidentally left both tracks playing at the same time when they played it back, and said WHOA that sounds cool! It was a total accident. Also, they have a photo on the back of this album (called Flat As A Pancake) with them sitting in Olivette Diner in St. Louis County. I grew up right down the street from that diner, and dad often took us there for breakfast on Saturdays.

Not a fan of live recordings? OMG to each their own but I cannot imagine not having them. This is where you see what a band can really do without do-overs, perfect recording conditions, and all playing at once without Frankenstein-ing tracks together. Studio album is going to give you that precision you want from the intricate soloes and harmonies and it's beautiful to hear that stuff. I love studio versions of the Eagles, Pink Floyd and Crosby Stills and Nash. But live versions even if they can be a bit sloppier are unmatched for energy. You get to hear subtle differences in the songs and sometimes whole new versions as the years go by. Most important...you get that crowd feedback where they chime in and how you how much they love you. Whaaaaaat would Benny and the jets be without that whistle from the crowd at the end or that yeeeeeah and whoooop in seven bridges road? The Eagles did Spanish style hotel california for hell freezes over. I heard a version of breakdown by Tom Petty once where the audience sang pretty much the whole song. And journey 1981 Houston show recorded for captured and cheap trick live from budokon are both bananas. Springsteen and Yes... Garth Brooks would be nothing without their live shows. But hey it's all good. 😘 (Now go to the corner put on some live recordings and think about your life choices.) 😂

They were big in the midwest and my first concert was in KC at 16 yrs old in 1977 at the Uptown Theater. Their album "Head East Live" was compiled of live performances from a few shows, one of which was KC. Not too sure about the Skynyrd analogy, they definitely had their own sound. Think if you listened to Love Me Tonight and Since you've been Gone you'd agree. They were unique but this hit song was just so damn good.

I don't know why but I always associate this this song with Rossington - Collins Band and their hit song, DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME. It might be they chatted around the same time but when I hear one, I think of the other. Although, DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME, is a brave attempt to overcome their tragedy loss of their former band mates in Lynyrd Skynyrd. In a brave attempt to forge a new identity from the surviving members striking out for a new identity and new territory, it was partially successful. But changing musical tastes and internal discord broke them up as the 8o's came on.
