German here. I am certainly one of the oldest of your observers. When this song first gained recognition, I was already a young adult. And you can only properly classify this song if you understand the whole musical movement behind it. The whole thing is called the “New German Wave” and started in western Germany towards the end of the 70s. Inspired and fueled by the punk music that emerged in England, young German musicians began to musically break away from the anglicization of German music that emerged during the occupation after the war, far away from the commercial German hit music, which was a kind of last bastion German-language music and differed from this "beer tent folk music" that still existed and still exists. It was the emancipation of music sung in German from English-speaking models. And that also had an impact on the other side of the Atlantic. Here too, German music achieved high rankings in the US billboards. Falco, had a number 1 hit, even in German. Nena had second place with a English cover, of her German hit (99 red Ballons) and of course Peter Schilling, as you heard, also with an English version of his German original. The impact on the international music business was not insignificant, because Germany has and had (even at the beginning of the 80s) the third largest music market in the world. And the industry was completely surprised by this development and lost a lot of money to small music publishers of untill yesterday unknown bands. The NDW lasted a good 4 years and changed a lot in music Germany...

There was that moment in the 80s in the US where German language artsts singing translated versions of their songs was a thing. And that's good because we got Peter Schilling, Falco, and Nena out of that. I do love "A Different Story" by Peter Schilling as well.

I'm German and therefore I only know the original German version of this song. The song is part of the so called „Neue Deutsche Welle“ (New German wave). It was a music movement in the German speaking region in the late 70s and the 80s in which these musicians wrote songs with German lyrics but didn't want it to be Schlager.

I used to go to visit my aunt in Erding during my HS summers in the early 80's. Extrabreit, Spliff , Nina Hagen, and Spider Murphy Gang, Kraftwerk (although earlier) among others caught my attention. I also discovered Iron Maiden in its very beginnings. Good times. Now I would drop dead if they did a review of Carbonara by Spliff. That was really popular when I was there one time.

We used to sing along not knowing what the words meant other than it was like David Bowie's song. lol We also listened to Nena and Falco in German only at the clubs. We went to a "New Wave" club. Rock clubs were rowdier and no dancing. We wanted to dance. This was our dance music in the 80's.

Great song! An incredible one-hit wonder. As others have noted this is a sequel to David Bowie's 1969 song "Space Oddity" and Peter Schilling has Major Tom cutting off communication with ground control and floating around in space. It is done with synths and a techno beat, which sounds nothing like Bowie's sound for his song but it does jam and was a big hit for this guy at the beginning of the MTV era. Made for a good video and so it got a lot of airplay on MTV. In the late 70's/early 80's there was a lot of techno music coming out of Germany and this song was originally released in Germany. Peter Schilling is a German synth pop artist and he along with one of the most influential techno bands, KRAFTWERK helped put Germany on the techno music map.

Most of the music of the 80s and 90s would hold up compared to music of the 2020s….which I do actually listen to. The music of the 80s especially was the most innovative, creative, and original music and sound ever produced. 90s music also was incredibly creative and original. Music from bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, and many, many other actual sounds more “modern” than music today. I like some hip hop and rap too from artists like Nelly and Eminem, but 2020s hip hop lyrics are just getting over-the-top obscene.

@@jamescurfman3284 Yes, but my point was for 99 Luftballons, the one that charted and was a big radio hit in the 80s was the German-language version. And it annoys me when the radio stations now in the US play the wrong (English language) version, out of ignorance, I guess.

@@mavfin8720 IMAGINE having an ENGLISH version of a song played in a country that primarily speaks ENGLISH! GOSH, WHAT A NIGHTMARE! If it was in an area of the U.S. where German was a dominant language (such as parts of Pennsylvania, just as one example), then I could see where the German version would be appropriate. But I can also see the point of view of the Radio Station Manager or the DJ who plays the English version instead. Now, whether you find that to be bigotry or not is between you and the DJ. Maybe the DJ is still wet-behind-the-ears and just does not know about the German Version. Maybe telling the DJ specifically to play the German Version was the way to go. But I really think you are too sensitive about it. That's why I was saying, I like BOTH versions. Stop being so picky and ENJOY WHAT YOU GET. You are lucky they played ANY version of that song, especially Thirty - Forty years later.

Lyrics: Standing there alone The ship is waiting All systems are go Are you sure? Control is not convinced But the computer Has the evidence No need to abort, the countdown starts Watching in a trance The crew is certain Nothing left to chance All is working Trying to relax up in the capsule "Send me up a drink!" Jokes Major Tom The count goes on Four... three... two... one Earth below us, drifting falling Floating weightless Calling, calling home Second stage is cut We're now in orbit Stabilizers up Running perfect Starting to collect Requested data "What will it effect when all is done?" Thinks Major Tom Back at ground control There is a problem Go to rockets full Not responding "Hello Major Tom Are you receiving? Turn the thrusters on We're standing by..." There's no reply Four... three... two... one Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless Calling, calling, home Across the stratosphere A final message "Give my wife my love" Then nothing more Far beneath the ship The world is mourning They don't realize He's alive! No one understands But Major Tom sees Now the light commands This is my home, I'm coming home Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless Coming home Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless Coming home Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless Coming, coming Home Home Home Home Home Home Home Home Home

This one's all about the lyrics. Yeah Amber, I've never quite figured out what he experienced in space. When he says "this is my home" I always thought that meant he is never coming back to earth. Someone mentioned the Moody Blues and I think you would like "Gemini Dream", one of their later hits that had that ethereal, spacey vibe.

It's interesting that during this time there were several songs that were released in their original German versions and became hits in North America and elsewhere, but this song was only released in English here. I wonder why the record company didn't give the German version a chance here, as with Falco, Nena, etc.

Yeah, this is sort of known as a follow up to David Bowie's "Space Oddity" but David Bowie actually did his own follow up which is called "Ashes To Ashes" two years before Peter Schilling did "Major Tom". With this version, it's kind of giving a happy ending to "Space Oddity" but it wasn't really the direction David Bowie was going with his song "Space Oddity". He has his own story to tell in "Ashes To Ashes". I hope you guys check that one out. 😎👍

Fun story, which is funny to no one but me and my wife. When they sing ‘Earth below us’ I always thought they said ‘Earthly Lords’. For 30 years I misunderstood these lyrics. When my wife and I got together, at one point this song came on and I confidently sang the lyrics as Earthly Lords…..which was greeted by her hysterical laughter and correction of what I was getting wrong. Now, through 17 years of being together, anytime I mess up something small, she will say (in the Anchorman voice) EARTHLY LORDS!!! ……..anyway, love this song.

I love misheard lyrics stories like these, so it's funny to me too, lol! When I was in college, one of my best friends was a brilliant Norwegian musician student who spoke nearly perfect English & she & I were always sharing & singing songs back & forth. (We still do, btw, decades later.) One day, she was belting out Hard To Handle by The Black Crowes in her amazing voice, & she sang, "Hey little thing let me light your chemicals..." I said, "Wait, WHAT?!" It's "light your candle cause..." She was certain she was accurate & went on to explain why chemicals made sense. I said something like, "It's not that they couldn't be singing "light your chemicals," but that they actually ARE singing "light your candle cause." One because it makes more sense & two, because candle rhymes with handle..." On we went, me debating the bi-lingual Norwegian over English lyrics in good fun! I mean really it's a testament to how amazing her English was, lol!
