In addition to what everyone else is saying, I think you should know that this song was done as a fundraiser/public awareness campaign for HIV/AIDS (esp. in the Black community). Dionne Warwick spearheaded the effort and, perhaps most amazingly, this was in 1985 when the stigma against advocacy for people with HIV/AIDS was HUGE. Dionne, Stevie, Gladys & Elton all took a substantial risk to their careers when they did this song together; whatever else anyone says about those four incredible artists, they covered themselves in glory with this. P.S. You must, must, must react to Gladys Knight & The Pips - when it comes to vocals she's in the same lofty tier as Aretha Franklin.

This song's proceeds were all donated to an AIDS charity. We were losing people left and right with no hope in sight to this disease. Then this song comes out and just makes you weep and gives some kind of hope. It was pretty incredible.

Return customers are the best customers, that's why there is no cure. The catholic church was able to cure black plague 200 years ago before anyone even knew what a germ or virus was but it didn't pay as good as someone who spends $200 a month to treat symptoms of their disease.

The AIDS epidemic was completely overblown. They were scaring people into thinking it was going to explode and start decimating the population, but that was based on the false narrative that it was a disease that would spread easily throughout the entire population. It's a disease that still to this day only affects gay men and drug users sharing needles.

Over 32 million people have died worldwide from AIDs since the beginning of the pandemic. Dionne is Whitney Houston’s cousin. Gladys Knight is most known for her work with her group, Gladys Knight & the Pips: Midnight Train to Georgia; Neither One Of Us; Heard It Through The Grapevine; Your the Best Thing; My Imagination; Love Overboard. Gladys also had the 1st video with break dancing in it, Save The Overtime. That’s What Friends are For was written by iconic composer, Burt Bacharach. The project was partially organized by the late great actress, Elizabeth Taylor, to raise money in the midst of the AIDS crisis. Dionne was connected with Burt from the late 1960’s, where she had many hits singing his music like, Say a Little Prayer For You, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, Alfie & What the World Needs Now. Stevie Wonder is one of the iconic artists in the history of recorded popular music, not just ‘the piano player’. He’s a multi-instrumentalist. In the 70’s & part of the ‘80’s, Stevie also played drums on most of his music. He also wrote Loving You, recorded by the late Minnie Ripperton, & I Can’t Help It, which Michael Jackson recorded on his album, Off The Wall. Wow!

Kudos to you both for learning about this song and these stars. From Wikipedia: "It was first recorded in 1982 by Rod Stewart for the soundtrack of the film Night Shift, but it is better known for the 1985 cover version by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder. This recording, billed as being by "Dionne Warwick & Friends", was released as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention. It was a massive hit, becoming the number-one single of 1986 in the United States, and winning the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Song of the Year. It raised over $3 million for its cause."

Seconding the recommendation to do Dionne Warwick's "Heartbreaker" which was written for her by the Bee Gees. Also worth nothing that a ton of the hit songs that the Bee Gees wrote for others, they also did recordings of themselves, so I highly recommend checking out their versions. You listened to Celine Dion a while back and she has a song written by them "Immortality" with them providing backup. As for Gladys, she's simply amazing and all of her songs are great, but I highly recommend "Midnight Train to Georgia" which is one of her biggest and I think also counts as a storytelling song. Seriously though, you can't go wrong with Gladys.

You were right: That was Gladys Knight, appearing with the others for a superstar performance billed as "Dionne and Friends." Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight have some of the best voices ever, fantastic, unique voices, and Stevie is a fantastic multi-instrumentalist. This was the biggest hit of 1985 in the US and, I just found out, also a cover!
