This song has a special place in my life. When I was a kid this song came out and at that time I had a dog, a boxer. His name was Duke and every time this song came on the radio or Gene was on TV singing it my dog would run around the house trying to find who was calling him.

Oh goodness… I was going to reply that my best friend’s mom played this song constantly on the turntable. And they had a boxer (named Abby) but we still danced with that dog to this song so many times. 😊❤️✌️

Gene Chandler lived down the street from my grammar school in Chicago. He came to perform at the school and afterwards I introduced my 8-year old self to him and shook his hand. That's a memory!

GREAT movie. John Goodman was perfect for that role, and I loved Camille Coduri as Miranda.... she was great in "Nuns on the Run" with Eric Idle and the late Robbie Coltrane. Got it on DVD.

We were lucky in the 70's because we got the 50's revival. Not only did we get Grease, Happy Days and American Graffiti, most of the stars from that era were around to cash in on it.

Believe it or not, this was played on pop radio stations fairly regularly into the mid 80s. I'm a 70s baby and *I myself* grew up hearing this and watching my folks' generation geek out to it, in '85, '86, when they were late-20s to early-40s.

The first Post Office I worked at in Northern Illinois (late 1980s) played an 'oldies' station in the back room and I have SO many memories tied up in this song!!

Johnny Horton is another 50s & 60s singer Johnny has a lot of big hits even though he died in a accident in 63 .... "battle of new Orleans "is his biggest hit....

For my Dad it was Honky tonk man he played that one a lot. I like that as well and ballad of new orleans, sink the bismark. My favorites though are songs like ole slew foot and sleepy eyed jonn for the humor )

This came out back in (1962) and made Gene Chanler a household name. I remember back 61 years ago as an 8-year-old boy strutting down the streets of New York City while singing this song. Those were great memories.

I am so glad that I was born in the 60s. My grandparents had records going back to the late 1800s and into the 1940s. My parents played music from the 40s and 50s on the radio and albums. My older siblings played music from the 60s. Add in the current music on the radio from the 70s and 80s along with my own albums. I got exposed to and really got to enjoy all of the music from the greatest times.

I was born in 1958 and I absolutely agree! Growing up I heard all the greats my parents listened to like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Then onto to everything I loved from the Beach Boys, Beatles to Journey and Bon Jovi and so much more in between! We had such diverse music and the absolute best of times!! 😊

This song holds a special place in my heart. My father's name was Verl and I grew up listening to him sing this with his name instead. When he passed six years ago, we decided to play this song at his funeral. Everyone was smiling through the tears because it was such a part of his personality his entire life. Thanks for the smiles.

The transition when he hits the chorus gets me. The whole song changes during that time. The rhythm, the backbeat and his pitch goes up several octaves. He does it in a way that you don't really grasp how much has changed. Listen closely to appreciate it. He performed this live a few dozen years later and still sounded incredible.

Saw Gene Chandler at numerous concerts over the years, mostly of them "oldies" shows. He would always enter the auditorium through the rear exit doors, with all the spotlights focused to the back of the room. So cool! Live shows sounded just like the recording!

My parents used to listen to the "oldies but goodies" and I didn't HATE it, but I definitely didn't appreciate it like I do now. I've lived through enough garbage pop music now to really see what we are missing out on. A) This music is pure talent, no tech tricks involved. If they had to perform a surprise concert, they could without skipping a beat. Nobody would have to scramble for laptops and tablets. And B) they had the good sense to hit you within seconds of the start, and finish like 2 minutes later. None of these songs ever wear out their welcome.

When I was a young boy I saw a movie about early rock & roll. They had a performance of this man performing Duke of Earl. That must have been 60 years ago or more, and I still remember the effect that had on me. Thank you for showing this.

I was born in 1969, I think it’s great to see you guys appreciate this golden music, it disappeared for decades, young people don’t fully realize how the 1950s were literally the start of the music we listen to today ; before this, there was only polka and things like Lawrence welk played as popular music, at this time the birth of rock and roll music was only played underground due to the musician’s skin colour , but all in all music makes the world go round, your reactions are great and this fun innocent upbeat music is worth bringing back today , society desperately needs a positive reset button and your channel is the way to do it

This is one of my favorite songs from that era, and it came out the year I was born. You simply must watch the film "American Graffiti," which features an entire soundtrack of hits from the late '50s and early '60s. And it features several actors who became big stars later in their careers.

I'm about to hit 60 in March so this came out before I was born but, music has always been part of my family life and as usual all people relate to the songs they hear at certain time of their lives. When I was about 10 and beyond I loved to listen to everything from the 50's to my time period. Then later in the 90's when I was in my 30's I worked midnight shift with a man in his 50's and out of respect of my elders we listened to "HIS" music which was oldies. I love that phrase because now oldies is the stuff from the 90's or later. He was totally shocked that I could "Name That Tune" in 3 notes or less every time, lol. I love all the songs you have listened to and figure you will eventually run out unless you really go back in time and glad you did this one. Even though your channel is called Rob Squad I call it Amber and Robs Squad because Ambers my girl. Okay Rob, you're my boy too as we love you both in our home.

In the 1980s this song was used in an Australian advertisement for Decore shampoo. Instead of singing Duke of Earl the people would sing Decore. Look out for the 1988 advert on KZfaq.

My dad was born in 1950 he danced in elementary to this song and Little Eva with the Loca Motion. He told me so many stories when he grew up in Connecticut.

I was born in 1964 and I remember this Song from my Youth. I heard it on the Radio Stations all of the Time. When we had a 50's Sock hop in my Junior High Days in the 70's this song was played at the Dance!

As a little kid, this was a favorite. We would get together with two other families after church and all of us kids would do skits for the parents. We would dress up and act out the songs or lip sync them. We would do Carol Burnett skits too. We did a skit for 'Leader of the Pack'. My little brother had a leather jacket and he rode his tricycle and we used our Barbie van to run into him so he could crash his bike like in the song. No iphones, no video games, no tablets, just pure, good old imagination.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I graduated HS in’66 so, Ahhhhhhhh! The music then was just that, music, pure and unmanufactured.

Kathie says…It seems like only Yesterday my friends and I were dancing to this song, in the “Big Gym”, in stocking feet! Yes…the kids today are missing out on all of this great music and memories from the 1950s and 1960s. Thank you for triggering some HAPPY memories for so many people during very troubled times in this world!
