Its not real. The sound we're hearing is a synthetic. The neck of the guitar lacks the curvature necessary to hit each string. You can play the guitar with a bow but it wouldn't sound CLOSE to this. Cool for a video though

It’s actually done manipulating the volume knob while hammering on the strings. Although, Adrienne Vandenberg did play it with a bow live. Saw it with my own eyes when they opened for Motley Crue in 1987.

The woman you see in the video eventually married the lead singer, David Coverdale. The marriage did not last long and she recently died a few months ago. Her name was Tawny Kitaen. And yes the guitarist is using a violin bow, reminiscent of Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. They had several hits in the 80s. "Here I Go Again" is one of our favorites.

true enough. if memory serves, Sykes played on the album but Adrienne VanDenberg and Vivian Cambell played on the tour. Both capable enough but Sykes was (is)a very dramatic player... rumor has it that he is retired, and uninterested in making new material. @@raymo6795 Vandenberg played a few solos & some rhythm on some tracks & yea Sykes played on 95% of the rest of the record as he did on Slip Of The Tongue. But David was the Super Diva back then & Fired the whole band while they were All out if town. What a douche. He's learned his lesson & seen the error of his way in his old age Now. But Sykes hasn't spoke to him Since that album came out. And David has said he's tried to talk to him but Sykes won't take his calls. Douche David was just that back in the day for Years. He would even fire Roadies that would call him Dave. How shitty is that? But since he's tryin to get into Heaven now, he's ALL smiles & giggles. "Slide It In" "Love Ain't No Stranger" "Here I Go Again" "Spit It Out" Just off the top of my head. Singer David Coverdale is often compared to Robert Plant. Guitarists Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Vai both used a violin bow on their guitars in concert for this song. Their stage show was incredible. I'm so glad I got to see them more than once! To my knowledge, Jimmy Page was the first to use a bow on a guitar with any noteriety.

Grr! I've given up trying to correct commenters on the violin bow thing. Guitarist John Sykes, who co-wrote all but two songs on the 1987 "Whitesnake" album, DID NOT PLAY THAT PART OF THE SOLO WITH A VIOLIN BOW! The director had the poser guitarist, Adrian Vandenberg, mime it with a bow because they thought it would look cool.

At their peak back in the 80's, Whitesnake were about as big as it gets. They don't seem to get as much attention these days though, while younger fans have been rediscovering a lot of bands from that era.

I saw Whitesnake live in concert in the early 90s with Motley Crue (girls, girls, girls album) and they absolutely killed it. The lead singer is very tall. He stood out front of the stage and sang he ass off. That guy could sing!!!! One of the best concerts i have ever seen and i have seen a-lot of the 80s rock bands in concert.

He was not the first person to play a violin bow on a guitar. And I'm not even sure if the originator was Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin but he did it live in Madison Square Garden in 1973 during the show / movie Song Remains the Same. This song is called Dazed and Confused. Look for his live version in Madison Square Garden in 1973 can't miss it. He also used and was the pioneer of the theremin in rock music. The theremin is the instrument that was used in the 50s and early 60s in Sci-Fi movies. It made that Eerie sound

Don't remember if I've commented on this one yet, but what the heck, right? It always helps the algorithm to put more comments on! This album was my favorite album when I was in junior high and high school, for years until I got into Aerosmith. All his other albums too, especially the next one, Slip of the Tongue; but this one especially for a loooong time. This song though scared the crap out of me when I was that age, because it said the words "make love", which I wasn't ready for, but now it's one of my favorite ones to turn on when I need to blast down the freeway and punch through everything. No one can deny that it's a masterpiece of a rock song. The using a violin / cello bow on a guitar was pioneered by Jimmy Page back in the '70s with Led Zeppelin, but Mr Sykes here is an incredible axeman who never got all of his props. Mostly because he was kind of a workhorse who went from band to band before doing his own thing; a lot of people who were really great at their instruments had that fate in the music industry, unfortunately, which is why you have bands like Toto, who got all of the sort of staff musicians of the world together to make an amazing, highly talented group. It's funny, because Whitesnake really is just David Coverdale and whoever he's playing with at the time, kind of like the way Nine Inch Nails works. He used to sing for Deep Purple, and then started this band in I think the late seventies, but it's had so many lineup changes that I think there was even one in the middle of this album when they went to Adrian Vandenberg for lead. You can see him on the Here I Go Again video, but I think you guys have probably done the whole trilogy by now. I always loved David Coverdale, a lot of people accuse him of ripping off Robert Plant, but you know what, he did his own spin on it. A lot of people also kind of hate on him because he switches up his lineup so much, but whatever floats his boat, man; I just want to hear the music. I'm sure people have already told you a lot of this stuff, but you know, whatever. I don't know if you noticed, but the buildup from the quiet part of the song through the end is like a metaphor for sex, you have the foreplay building slowly, and then you have the section that's basically thrusting, and then you have the climax. Zeppelin did that as well on a couple of songs. It's very effective. You can tell by all the panting, LOL. Anyway, thank you so much for doing Whitesnake, I adore them still. They probably had a lot to do with my puberty, lol.
