Two Unrelated Nomadic Lion Coalitions Share A Buffalo Meal | Maasai Mara Safari | Zebra Plains

An unusual, but easily explained, sighting of two rival nomadic lion coalitions together as they share a buffalo meal
Late one morning drive we came across the Nomadic ex-Sand River male lion coalition (Buddha and Slaver aka Black and Ginger) watching a herd of buffalo it was hot and they looked tired so we left them to it. The next morning we returned to find they had actually caught a buffalo overnight not far fro where we let them. Unusually a second coalition of younger nomads (Chumvi and PiliPili that were born in the Enkoyonai pride) had joined them to feed and there was no animosity between the two rival groups. The hyena clan were also trying to get a share!
As both coalitions were nomadic, one pair having lost their territory and the other not yet old enough to have claimed one, there was no reason for the two groups to fight as there was enough food to go around. Nomadic males often tolerate other nomads and will sometimes even form coalitions together. A coalition formed with nomads is usually not as strong as those formed by males that have grown up together. In this case both groups went their separate ways after feeding.

About Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos:
The purpose of the channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day. Make sure to subscribe and enable ALL notifications!

Male lions are so iconic. My favourite animal on the planet and they are in danger of being wiped out in the wild due to habitat loss, poaching and retaliation killings by farmers. I dream of a world where these magnificent animals are able to live wild and free in paradise, a world where they will never again be hunted and subjected to the atrocities committed against them by man.

Obviously, both coalitions must have been engaged in bringing the buffalo down, and the older lions must have made a rational judgment that sharing with the younger coalition be far better than fighting with them to risk unnecessary injuries. If both coalitions consisted of many lions, and that only one prey is far less than what they need, a fight would occur. Moreover, the personality of each of these 4 lions also plays an important role in making sharing happen.

Bovine TB is not common in the lion population in the Mara/Serengeti ecosystem. The lion was old and had very worn teeth meaning he could not eat properly and was very weak due to malnutrition

Did they stick around or this was just a one off? I know boxer nose and earless ended up as a coalition. But we have four here. Would be interesting to know what the dynamics are now.

Great footage. Nevertheless watching that lone elephant in the distance at 11:29 grazing. Seems unusual to see an isolated young elephant in the middle of the plains unless it's a lone bull elephant. As always your videos are awesone, many thanks to Rob the Ranger.

There was nothing left when we returned, the hyenas probably got some. The lions likely filled their bellies and went back for more. So perhaps 60kg of meat each

His belly was full. Lions need to find somewhere to lie down to let the food digest after a big meal.
