I told my friends/co-workers that "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" by Panic At the Disco is one of the best white boy songs I've ever heard. Now they're sending me song suggestions and I'm doing live reactions here, on the Trying White Music series lmao

Speaking of live versions you need to see check out Stevie Ray Vaugh - Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo. Stevie Ray Vaughn is a blues musician who was easily on the same level as Dimebag. "They say playing the blues is like being Black twice, Stevie missed both times but I never noticed" - B.B. King (Blues God)

lead singer, phil anselmo, right? back in 1992-93, when i was in high school, everyone knew that phil was racist. mostly against black folks. i don't know if he's changed, but i doubt it. you wanna keep going with this "white people music" thing, check out "no one's leaving" by jane's addiction. "jesus christ pose", by soundgarden. "if you have to ask", by the red hot chili peppers. i have more for you, however, music should not be categorized by race, so i dunno if i'm wasting my time here.... you really wanna trip, check out "willie the pimp" by frank zappa, feat. captain beefheart on vocals.

@@jdbankshot "In a July 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Anselmo spoke out against Pantera and his other band's usage of the Confederate flag, claiming that it was a mistake to use it on their merchandise, albums, and other promotional material. Anselmo said "These days, I wouldn't want anything to fucking do with it because truthfully ... I wouldn't. The way I feel and the group of people I've had to work with my whole life, you see a Confederate flag out there that says 'Heritage, not hate.' I'm not so sure I'm buying into that." Anselmo said originally, that Pantera used the image because they were huge fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but it was never about promoting hate"

Fun fact: that "stomping" sound effect near the end, as you put it, is actually the drums! They just put a whole hell of a lot of reverb on them, and set it to delay a small amount so the reverb kicks in just a little bit after he hits the drum.

Also to talk just a little bit about the importance of drums in rock and metal music: I absolutely love the way they do drums in this sort of stuff. As opposed to Jazz music and stuff similar to it, the snare drum is what consistently keeps the beat going in rock/metal, and that means they can play around more with the kick drum and create some interesting as hell rhythms with it. For example, if you ever make a video on the Pantera song "Becoming", _definitely_ keep a lookout for what the kick drum is doing, because honestly the kick pattern in that song is half of what makes it so interesting. And also, drum fills are just really cool! They bring a hefty amount of extra energy to already pretty good songs, and really elevate them to be something more. You find a lot of cool ones in Thrash metal, I've noticed.
@Bushanie24
@Bushanie24 5 ай бұрын
off of your last couple of lines regarding drums i am going to have to suggest you listen to the song "live undead " by Slayer off of the album "south of heaven" the entire album is a clinic on thrash drumming, Dave Lombardo (drummer) couldn't be touched in that 80's 90's era. enjoy

This video popped up in my feed.. I loved your reaction to all the juicy little things that Pantera put in there music, a couple facts I found out while taking a master class from Terry Date. I work with live bands and use some of his techniques to get certain sounds. For Pantera he used small amounts of Reverb and Delay on Vinny Pauls drums.. Then when needed he would add more to put more of impact and pull out emotions of the listener… So in essence you get exactly what you reacted to.. In my opinion this is the perfect sonic album for the 90s… Hearing it on a large PA is amazing…

Man, the live version they did at that massive show in Moscow is one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Dimebag was on another level that day. Even though I wasn't there, I'm old enough to remember the hype of all those bands gathering that day in Russia. It's better than the studio recording. Although the vocals are a bit muddy, the instruments came together beautifully.

I have to admit (and this is pretty unpopular/hot take) that whole Moscow live has gotten so overrated after years. Yeah it was one of a kind during it's time, if we talk about number of people. But imo if you watch other/later live shows of Pantera (for an example), I think they definitely shined more during middle and later 90's.

The live recording mentioned is live in Moscow, the show was legendary. I'm going to respectively disagree with this being a certified banger, it might not be Walk status, but the thing you have to understand about this, Walk is arguably the definitive anthem of the 90's, nothing compares to it, it's the Iron Man of the decade. You can't diminish a song like Domination, which was a concrete foundation of the Pantera setlist through the duration of their career and is still a part of the reunion tour.

You would love sludge metal, judging by your reaction to that breakdown part. Sludge is a style of metal that is often slower, noiser, and rhythmically complex and/or groovy. There is a sludge supergroup, called Down, which has the same frontman as Pantera. A lot of early sludge also has some of that same southern rock spice too. So you can try that. I would recommend the songs Stone the Crow, or Lysergik Funeral Procession. But really, if you want to try to some sludge I'd start with the bands eyehategod, Melvins, Buzzov*en, or Acid Bath.

This is the second time i've watched you listen to my favorite band. I'm subscribed now. Don't worry about the haters. Pantera was not a racist band. Phil has definitely said some things that were probably taken out of context but I wasn't there so I don't know. If you watch any of their live home videos they brought metal to everybody. I'm so glad that you're getting into them bro. Dimebag could make it scream. Edit: coincidentally, There's an episode of SpongeBob called Pre Hibernation Week featuring Pantera as special musical guest". They use the song Death Rattle.

Yo! I stumbled upon your page and I'm diggin it! Nice work, my guy! Question, how about a reaction to a white rapper that I'm guessing you've never heard. Please do a reaction video to Bike Rap by Wax! I think you'll really dig his rhymes and flow!

Dude! Ive come across your RATM and SOAD reactions and now this one. I had to search if you had done any for Pantera..... but BRO. You need to listen to "Suicide Note Pt 1" and then "Suicide Note Pt 2" back to back with not stopping between the songs..... Thats what got me into Pantera at 16 in 1996.
