I met Rich Brown at one of the Bass Shows (the snowy one in London) and he is one of the sweetest, loveliest, most humble and down to earth people I've ever met. He's also one of the greatest players of all time. His phrasing, articulation, sense of melody, harmony, groove, feel, and tone, are about as good as they get. He's also a brilliant teacher and educational content creator, and has an amazing speaking voice which is as rich (pun intended) as his tone.

Love a bass solo lol. Stanley Clarke doesn't get enough love on your channel. He'd be part of every bass conversation for me but he rarely gets a mention when you're talking about 'the greats'. Love your channel though

I took a lesson from Gary Willis in the 90s. He talked about having a light touch, it gives you a different sound, but it also gives you a greater dynamic range. You can always play softer, but if you’re really digging in, there’s nowhere to go if you want to get louder.

I've found that when someone says you shouldn't play bass, or a certain genre, with a pick, you can usually safely ignore anything else they have to say.

Rest aside that one can choose the pick not because its sonic propierties but also a personal handicap. Charles Benavent is a flamenco jazz fusion virtuoso who plays with Paco de Lucia, he plays with a pick because he suffered an accident on his fingers and this way works for him.

I like a good bass solo, but i'm much much more about in the pocket. I love it when a bassplayer and a drummer are completly locked in the pocket Like Gadd and Paladino (with Stevie Wonder) or Nick Campbell and Abe Laboriel jr (with Scary Pockets) I'll die for that. I love bass solos. Big grunge fan and tribel tech :-) My favorite bass solo is from Tal Wilkenfeld when she plays with Jeff Beck live at ronnies during Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers. not just the solo, but the interaction/response from Jeff and the audience. Magic!

I will admit I’ve been avoiding the jazz subject videos but now I’m glad I clicked because these bass solos are really beautiful sounding even tho it’s not my thing. I am really considering the course just for the education of it. I would love to be able to play so effectively even if it’s not my preferred genre. Great video, love the bass solo geekery.

18:07 he is amazing. he does a lot of repeating the same notes in different strings in a pattern run. very much like some of the famous jaco licks. this is a short scale bass too.

when reacting to Jaco, you need use 'Port of Entry (live)' from night passage, now that is something to rave about. and from an accompanying pov, refuge of the roads from Hejira - sublime. in fact those two albums in my opinion are peak Jaco.

Yeah, every time I listen to one of their podcasts I want to run out and buy a reverb pedal. I don't know if reverb works so well on bass for traditional bass lines, but it sounds amazing if you're playing a solo high up on the neck. I also love when Ian uses spring reverb and a pick with bass. Gives it that retro tic tac bass feel.

As a child of the 90's (born in 1978 like some other fine bass players) we went through the anti shred. Whilst we grew up with Vai & Satch, Gilbert & Sheehan, the grunge movement almost killed off that shred thing. Do'nt get me wrong, I went to see Mr Big last month and fugging loved it but I'm personally not a shredder and because of that, less bothered about it. Show me the groove man!

I just pulled up his music on Spotify and was listening to the latest album and that really jumped out to me as your playing. The use of drive sounded "Ian-ish," as well as the line itself. I love a good bass solo. Maybe the best one I ever took in person was when I was in my high school jazz combo and I was playing an '80s Ibanez that I made into a fretless. I don't know if the audience loved it, but my drummer said it melted him in a good way and that was good enough for me. Besides that I'm really starting to enjoy Janek's style and I would like to start moving my playing in that direction.

Janek have a new bass with a double "reverse" P Bass pickups setup actually .. that thing sounds amazing. I know there is a ton of monster bass players, but I m always surprised and a bit saddened that so many people overlook an incredible musician who lives near me and who has long accompanied Jaco Pastorius. He is an absolutely amazing soloist! Please go and give a listen to Mr. Michel hatzigeorgiou, my friends. Absolute MONSTER, superbe technique and a great great musicality. I love bass solos. These videos are inspiring me to want to pick-up my bass again. There has been a hiatus with work and family. I had started the technique accelerator course a couple years ago but I think the amp may need some maintenance. Perhaps my Father's Day gift will be to restore my Ampeg head.

These guys are great! So inspiring, so much to reach for. Jaco especially. I really can't say I understand the atonal stuff. But please, do a feature on Sam Wilkes. He plays with Louis Cole a lot, and he's just a gigantic monster young bass player. P.S. Short scale basses do look ridiculous on large people! Hell, I saw the late, great Leslie West and he even made his LP look tiny! Great show, though. It was Leslie West/The Ramones/Iggy Pop and I think that Iggy and the Ramones brought out a big cake to Leslie on stage because it was his birthday. It was a great, weird show.

Great video. I'm firmly in the Chris Squire camp. His playing - to me - is the perfect cross between melody and rhythm. No one plays like him. If I would need to choose someone from the Jazz camp, it would be Helmut Hattler, whose style was very influencing to me. Not that I'm nearly as good as any one of them. ;)

I bought a 30inch fretless and a 25inch fretted this week. The 25er is so freaking cool, it sounds WICKED. The 30 is my first fretless. It is really hard to choose wich to pick up 😁 Wich is a really nice problem to have.

My Gary Willis VHS tape is pretty worn from watching it over and over and over. Great to see Steve Swallow included. His timing and style is so unique I’d love to see Bill Frisell (gtr) and Steve Swallow collab on something. You could easily do a dozen more videos of this topic. Would love to see your commentary on Percy Jones, specifically his playing on his Bass Exploration instructional video. For non-bass solos, Stu Hamm does some amazing fusion stuff with Gambale Hamm Smith. Some of Stu’s playing reminds me a little bit of Alan Holdsworth albums where the bass just moves and guides the band.
