Typically hikers don't like to camp so near a trailhead, especially on a weekend. Because of an easy access, sometimes locals will turn the site into a party site. The soon-to-be new Rock Gap Shelter is very close to the trailhead.
The old shelter was demolished in Dec 2022 due to age and condition. The new shelter was in the process of being rebuilt by volunteers of the Nantahala Hiking Club.
The site has a privy and several tent platforms. The water source is nearby. There are North and South access trails to the site.
Rock Gap trailhead has parking for maybe 8-10 vehicles. The parking area can be found off of USFS 67 which is off of Old US 64. Hikers always appreciate being able to get rid of trash when trash cans are available.
