An interview with TOTO on their 1982 masterpiece TOTO IV. Everyone knows the hits… Like the #1 smash Africa and the #2 hit Rosanna but what about he secondary hits like the top 10 hit I Won’t Hold You Back and Make Believe sung amazingly by Bobby Kimball. Up next Steve Lukather and David Paich tell the stories some of those secondary hits and how they came to be. Also how Michael Jackson wanted Steve Lukather to play on Thriller and when Michael called Steve, hung up on him several times thinking it was a crank call. Including an appearance with Steve Porcaro talking about his dark offering on Toto IV… It’s a Feeling. An interview with a legendary band that should be in the rock and roll hame.. All of the records they’ve played on have combined sales of half a billion!

#1980s #rock #vinylstory
Up next… An interview with one of my favorite bands ever. Not only were they one of the biggest bands their time, their members were so prolific they played on some of the biggest albums of all time. Here they tell the story of their peak in the early 80s with an album that won multiple grammys when that mean something and ruled radio while influencing the biggest album ever. In fact when the biggest star on the planet called to ask them to play on his album, Today’s guest hung up on him several times because he though it was crank call. You’ll love these guys.
Hey music Junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to
celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all
time. “If other passengers are always asking you to turn your music down when they are riding in your car….you’re gonna love this channel.” Subscribe below right now. Click the bell so you never miss out.
Today we are starting a brand new show on this channel I’m going to let you decide what we call it. Let us know in the comments and whichever has the most votes we’ll use it. Or if you have a better suggestion for the title let us know. This show is going to about iconic artist’s biggest albums but with a curveball. We always talk about the hits on these big records but what about the secondary singles, the album tracks.. the lesser know songs… I was thinking of calling it either The Other ones, or Secondary Hits or the underdogs… You tell me which one you like and we’ll go with it. My first subject for this series is going to be Toto IV, one of my favorite albums ever.
Everyone celebrates the two big hits from this record, deservedly so… Africa which has now become one of the biggest songs of all time hit #1 and was the biggest hit from the grammy winning record and the #2 scorcher Rosanna the song that was inspired by a certain Hollywood actress who was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro.
But what about the secondary hits from this huge album? After the first two singles Rosanna and Africa rocked radio there were three more singles and a few other songs that could’ve been singles that made this an essential record of all time. Make Believe was a secondary single that notched a #30 position on the billiard hot 100 as well as #19 cashbox.

Must say POR has taught me lots more about the members and songs of Toto than I ever knew before. Passed by all their stuff over the years as radio seemed to play plenty enough of it for me at the time. But they are such amazing musicians and humble knowledgeable people. I enjoy their interviews immensely. Have lots of Toto on my Liked Songs Playlist now! Including Steve's amazing ZERO TAKE incredible solo on Lionel Richie's Running With The Night... that was an amazing POR assisted find! May Toto make the Hall some day soon.

Toto! One of my faves!😍🤩 As for the Rock Hall, it's a complete joke and shouldn't be taken seriously. The Toto guys were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame, which, I'm sure, means more to them than being in a HoF that’s administered by people who have trashed the band since their inception.

Professor, thank you for re-introducing me to Toto. I loved their first album, but got consumed with hard rock by the time Toto 4 came out. So much so that I overlooked Toto. Now, with a better appreciation for music, I am so thrilled to listen to everything Toto I can. I am a big Van Hagar fan, and have enjoyed your interviews with Sammy about those years. My appreciation for the great guitar players of the 80s ( EVH, Schon, SRV, etc.) is now expanded by Luke. Not only can he hang with the best, but his voice is amazing. My favorite Toto songs are those where Luke sings the lead, even though they had at least 4 members that had the lead at some point! Thanks again from a fellow music geek!!!

At the very least, TOTO should be in the RRHOF in the same category that they're putting Judas Priest in. Not only did TOTO have some huge hits, but those guys played on some huge albums as session musicians, as this video points out. Those guys are all insanely talented, and they can play anything from lush pop to blistering hard rock! This is a seriously underrated band.

Toto has always been in the background of songs that I liked, but it took me longer to get around to paying closer attention than I would care to admit... they have been making music pretty much as long as I have been breathing and always songs that I was glad to hear come up on the radio airplay.... but now that I have done a deeper dive into their catalog, I am astounded. By their music, their talent and expertise, and by their humility and sense of humor for being both among the very best in the music industry at what they do, and simultaneously not the fame-driven machine, but genuine artists and virtuosos. I won't hold you back, Pamela, Stop Loving You, I'll be Over You, and even another Stephen Porcaro song, Lea... and so many more... I have a new favorite playlist... I call "Toto: The Essential Essentials" that I created from their greatest hits album, and additional tracks from studio albums added to that. Definitely a band that I remember from the background of my life, that I now so badly wish I had brought to the forefront MUCH sooner, but it definitely is at the forefront now.

Luke and David are a hoot! As you pointed out Professor, these two guys have their fingerprints on so many iconic tunes from their session days alone, let alone as Toto. The stories they have are legendary. BTW, David has his new solo album ("Forgotten Toys") premiering this week. "Sometimes you don't have to play that much to say a lot". Toto has always been, and still is, my all-time favorite band. I remember sitting in a dental office in the 80s reading a magazine article titled something like, Toto: The Greatest Technical Band Of All Time. As a musician growing up in the 70s and 80s, I was amazed by how "musical," for lack of a better word, they were. It never surprised me that they were in such demand from peer bands. And their records don't do them justice compared to their live shows. I know that the Rock 'N Roll HOF tends to badly drag their feet on putting performers in, but how much time and accolades have to pass before Toto is recognized? Thanks for the channel, Prof! It's terrific!

Professor, thank you so much for doing this interview and highlighting Toto IV. Also, talking about their other tracks on that album. One of my favorite albums. For me, tracks 6, 7 & 8, Afraid of Love, Lover's in the night and Waiting for Your Love were the deep cuts for me. All three belong together in that order. The short fade of Afraid of Love right into strong keyboard lead in from Lover's in the Night is so cool and dramatic at the same time. One of my favorite bands of all time and, IMO, underrated. A CRIME they're not in the R & R HOF. I have two older brothers (6 and 8 years older) and as a kid I would sneak into their room and listen to their collection - which was massive - Beatles, Stones, KISS, Foreigner, The Who, Heart, etc. In 1982, I was 13 and had my summer grass cutting jobs. The first (of many to come) album I bought for myself was Toto IV. I have it to this day and still listen to it.

I think the best way to put it is, just like a world-class actor can express a wide variety of different characters, and moods, and feelings, so too great musicians, composers, have that range. They can put into music and words what you're feeling better than you can. That's what I think great bands like Toto do so well. They have a lot of quirky, unique songs that resonate but don't necessarily fit neatly into well-defined categories of music. Like an artist that uses every color in the palette to create one masterpiece after another.

In 1983, for my birthday, my parents got me my very first Walkman. My sister bought me my first album on casette - the Police "Synchonicity". I also got some cash from the grandparents to add to my brand new tape collection. So I walk into Nancy's Record Shop with enough cash to buy four albums, but a whole store full of choices. In retrospect, I think I did pretty well with Chicago's "17", Stray Cats "Built For Speed", Huey Lewis' "Sports", and Styx's "Kilroy Was Here", but the one album I kept looking at was Toto's "IV" album - it just missed the cut. Years went by and while I continued to add to my casette collection, I never went back to the original "IV" album by picking up a greatest hits album a few years later instead. One day during my college days I saw the album in the bargin bin for like $1.99 and snatched it up and listened to it over and over. It truely has great songs from beginning to end - I just had to wait the better part of a decade until I had it for myself.

Now and then I will go back and listen to the whole album instead of just the singles and it just gets better every time. I know other programs use the term deep cuts, but I like the phrase The Full Measure for this show. These songs don't just fill holes on an album, they instead give it the fullness it takes to be as great as it is.

Rick Beato recently posted a video where he dissects "I Won't Hold You Back". As Rick analyzes the song he just gets more and more blown away by Steve's talent. Not just an incredible guitarist, but an inspired songwriter and first-rate vocalist. Though I didn't know till the video above that TImothy B. Schmidt did backup vocals and the London Symphony Orchestra (of John Williams / Star Wars fame) provided the strings on Hold You Back. "Epic" is an understatement.

I've loved Toto ever since the first time I heard 99. Hydra is my favorite album from them, lots of talent in that band from everybody. David Hungate is a very underrated bassist and I like Bobby Kimball's vocals but also the fact that there are several very good vocalists. And the R&R Hall of Fame is a joke as we all know.

The R&RHOF started out as a great thing, meant to recognize bands for their careers, contributions, and their impact to the music world. Now it's turned into a elitist organization that pretty much lets anyone in as long as they've been around for a certain amount of time, and fits into the snobby framework of what they think is acceptable. There are so many bands that should be in there but get the cold shoulder because the bands don't fit in to their "image" of what music they'll accept. Pretty sad.........

A Hall of Fame, in general, is kinda lame. It would be better named the Rock and Rock History Museum. Works live on their merit and don’t need a hall of fame to exist.
