I have wanted to polish Onyx marble pebbles for some time now, Onyx marble is so beautiful and ideal for making jewellery etc. Marble is soft compared to Agates or Jaspers etc. So rock tumbling it should be easy yes? Well no, softer stones are generally harder to achieve a good polish so my attempt at tumbling Onyx marble was fraught with problems. In the end I did achieve a good polish and the Onyx marble pebbles looked fantastic!
Rock tumbling is not always simple or straight forward but the challenge is all part of the fun.
Learning new types of rocks and stones to tumble polish will broaden your knowledge and make you think about the process.
I did not get this exactly right this time but on my next attempt I am sure I will do this faster and better.
I have made other rock tumbling videos, tutorials and product reviews, please check them out if you are a rock nut like me!

Nice video again. I made my first little pendant of quartzite yesterday. I didn't like the way it turned out but I learned a lot from the experience, I'm sure next time will be better. In the evening I became very inspired and I don't think that would have happened without this little project and seeing what can and can't be done.

Hi Stefania, very well done for trying. I bet the pendant is better than you think. Most of us who make things are too self critical (so my daughter keeps telling me). Interestingly I don't think I have worked quartzite so I may be asking you for pointers one day! However if you enjoyed the making that is 90% of what matters. Glad you are learning and thank you for the kind comments it does mean a lot.

Intriguing that there was such a difference with the polishes. That's an area I haven't experimented in yet. Great info.

Well done, Steve, your persistence paid off. I tumbled some soft rock, that had lovely banding. Could not get a polish on them. I ended up coating them with linseed oil, this works well, even though it is strictly cheating. I will give your cerium method a try. Interesting process of elimination. Good to see you again. :)

Hi peter, glad to be back! If you got near to a polish by tumbling try the dry polish idea on one of the rocks, polish powder, felt pad or towel and spit. Rub briskly. If it will not polish this way the stone may be too soft to take a polish. Best of luck, let me know how you get on.

Good video again! Interesting polishing a very soft stone. I will try some soft stones I have. Been polishing super hard Mookaite and Australian Ribbonstone based on your videos. Hard to cut but polishes up very well!

Hi Morris, glad to hear you are getting on well with polishing harder stones, best of luck with the softer stones. I will point out that to have a chance of tumble polishing the stones do have to be able to polish them using more conventional methods, carbide or diamond disc polishing etc. Anyhoo, best of luck and please let me know how you get on. Cheers!

I am have a problem polishing a Malachite slab myself and I think it is because it is to soft (I think).. it keeps leaving a "water spot" type of look to it.. I have tried all kinds of different mediums to polish it with.. a light oil is next I thing.. Love your work.. thanks for sharing your time with us..

I have not yet tried Malachite but it may be similar in hardness to marble. Before tumbling try the hand polishing route. put a smidge of polish powder (tin oxide, cerium etc) on a cloth or felt pad, a bit of spit and rub, if you are getting close to a polish with the tumble this might do the trick. I may have got the wrong end of the stick here, is a flat plate you are trying to polish? Anyway best of luck and thanks for the input and for watching.

Thank you for your video. So informative and helpful. Getting ready to tumble some calcite/onyx I self collected. Do you know approximately what grit your AO is?
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490

Hi, If it is as Onyx marble it is relatively soft so I would try just first tumble at 120. then straight to 400 or 600 grit. Hope this helps!

Hi Steve, my sister in law has just given me some Western Australian Zebra Stone. The web says it is MOH 3. She wants me to tumble it. Any guesses on how that will go? Thanks

Hi Morris, I think it is too soft to polish. You could try to polish just one face by hand just to see. However you never know, it might be worth trying just as an experiment? Some softer limestones do take a polish of sorts. Let us know how it goes!
