R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe. Additionally, many liner notes from the band's albums list attorney Bertis Downs and manager Jefferson Holt as non-musical members.
Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington. The band's lineup consists of founding members Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), as well as Matt Cameron (drums), who joined in 1998. Keyboardist Boom Gaspar has also been a touring/session member with the band since 2002.
Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums).
Megadeth is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. Guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson formed the band in 1983 shortly after Mustaine's dismissal from Metallica. Along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer, Megadeth is one of the "big four" of American thrash metal, responsible for its development and popularization.
Deftones is an American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California in 1988. It was formed by Chino Moreno (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Stephen Carpenter (lead guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums) and Dominic Garcia (bass).
Fall Out Boy is an American rock band formed in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 2001. The band consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, lead guitarist Joe Trohman, and drummer Andy Hurley. The band originated from Chicago's hardcore punk scene, with which all members were involved at one point.
Guns N' Roses, often abbreviated as GNR, is an American hard rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1985. When they signed to Geffen Records in 1986, the band comprised vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler.
A Perfect Circle is an American rock supergroup formed in 1999 by guitarist Billy Howerdel and Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan. A Perfect Circle has released four studio albums, the first three during the early 2000s: Mer de Noms, their debut album in 2000, and followed up by Thirteenth Step in 2003; then in 2004, Emotive. The band reformed in 2017 to record a fourth album, Eat the Elephant, which was released on April 20, 2018.
Korn (stylized as KoЯn) is an American nu metal band from Bakersfield, California, formed in 1993. The band is notable for pioneering the nu metal genre and bringing it into the mainstream.
Genesis are an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The most commercially successful and longest-lasting line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. Significant former members were original lead singer Peter Gabriel, and guitarists Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett.

Probably "Invisible Kid" by Metallica off their St. Anger album. Granted, a lot of the songs off that album don't really have a lot of replay value. But that song to me is by far the worst thing off that album. It's not catchy, music wise, the guitar sounds terribly out of tune, and most shocking of all, the vocals and lyrics are far below the standards that James Hetfield has set for himself over the course of his career. He just sounds weak and uninspired throughout this entire song, which feels like it's about 6 minutes too long to begin with. Really, it should have been left on the cutting room floor, as far as I'm concerned...

As terrible as Bugs is, I love the fact that it exists. It's like they're taking the piss out of the concept of music itself. I'd also like to mention Alice in Chains' Iron Gland. It's a guitar riff Jerry Cantrell liked to play to annoy the other members of the band, and they let him put it on an album in exchange for never doing it again.

@SciFyerGaming great take on that song. like most PJ songs there can be multiple meanings and what it means to us, what it means to Eddie Vedder or the other band members, and what Eddie Vedder says it means to the media, are all different things and can still all be true. Eddie said he had terrible poison ivy at the time and was itching out of his skin and that's why he wrote that song. he got the accordion at a second hand store and was messing around with it. he said he would play that song for people, tell them (with a straight face) it was their next single, and he thought it was the best thing they'd ever done. he talked about it in an interview and he thought it was pretty damn funny. could it also be about his anxiety from fame, being hounded by the media, and being stalked by crazy fans, sure.

Two interesting notes: 1. R.E.M.'s intent with Shiny Happy People was supposed to be satire of something that happened in China, where they covered a violent bombing with murals of "shiny happy people". Obviously the satire failed and it became a cheesy as hell song. 2. No one except Axl knew of My World's existence when recorded. Axl made it all by himself two weeks before the album released. The band didn't even know it existed until after the album came out.

When the album came out, I played it for my friend Vicki, and she said "He's just being silly, isn't he?". That's a good way to describe My World. The song isn't bad, it's just silly. When he did the Charles Manson cover? THAT WAS BAD.

The story about Shiny Happy People being about China censoring news of a terrorist bombing, or the Tiananmen Square Massacre is an urban legend. The band has never said that was the case and Michael Stipe explicitly said the opposite, that it was unironically a happy pop song and that he hates it. R.E.M. fans really want that song to secretly not be twee trash. sorry folks.

I honestly have a real soft spot for Shiny Happy People. It's honestly so kid-friendly happy that it goes all the way to legit creepy and unnerving (which I think was the original intention of the song). It's like the theme song for a cult. Propaganda seemed weird to me at first, but then I realized what I’d been missing the whole time. It's this edgy rap battle with 'u gay' type insult lyrics throughout but near the end they do a complete 180 and basically accidentaly come out as homosexuals and try to shake it off right after. I think that's kinda funny if you think about it this way.

Honestly, All in the Family is very on brand, but poorly executed. I feel there was bit of making fun of the underground rap battle culture (which this clearly was), and JDs lyrics were often offensive. Think of Clown, Daddy, and Fagit. Hell, ADIDAS. Though, to be fair, ADIDAS could also be on this list and it would be difficult to argue his reasons, and I do believe it might be their shame song, I know it's Head's shame song. And to be even more fair, Daddy wasnt offensive to be shocking, or to develop a musical style, although it did both. Daddy, imo, will remain their opus. Despite being a difficult listen lyrically, the song is genius, and is important to those who suffered a similar abuse to know they are not alone. Well, I guess that was an unneeded tangent. I apologise.

That Green Album is one of my favorites from REM, but they did have a couple of slow cheesy songs, which I cannot remember the titles, but I do remember skipping them when I played the CD. Stand was overplayed in 89, but I still really like Get Up and Pop Song 89. Monster in 1994 was actually my favorite REM album and I was pretty familiar with their early 80s titles. I think I have a more positive opinion of Shiny Happy People because I was young enough to only ever hear it in two places (and both had a profound effect on me to the point that I really only associate the song with these), an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, when she went to an alternate universe where everyone was sad and angry, and an episode of Angel, where it represented everyone being happy all the time, but only because they were under the magical influence of a worldwide Supreme Leader demon goddess who took human sacrifices and killed anybody who wasn't completely happy and obedient. So I always accociate the song with a tinge of irony, or general "wrongness", which makes it play differently
