Thanks for the info! I think we need to be careful about calling it "philanthropy" though! It was done in order to revamp their image, so they'd be associated with good works (and not just the "robber baron" image they'd earned.) Philanthropy has now become synonymous with making large financial donations, or setting up foundations. But - philanthropy means "love of people." You can be a philanthropist without donating money. And you can set up a foundation and donate money without wanting to serve the greater good. Call me cynical, but I believe that nowadays, "philanthropy" is a convenient way that rich and powerful people A) Try to present themselves as "good" in the media (the moment the public hear the word "philanthropist" they tend to accept a person's wealth and don't question what they do with it). B) Funnel money through foundations so it's tax-deductible (!) and C) On the most sinister end of the spectrum, use charities as ways to influence society in line with their personal values, aka social engineering. (The Open Society is a good example of this.) Rockefeller Sr.'s "investment" in education was actually a clever way to influence how the educational system formed. Remember, these dynasties want the wealth for the future generations in their family. The more systems they can set up and preserve to work in their favour, the better for them. They make plans based not only on what wealth they can accumulate in their lifetime, but to preserve the legacy and prestige of their lineage for generations.

There is a development in Albuquerque that Winthrop’s company constructed and may still operate. It includes a large shopping mall called Winrock. It’s been around since at least the late Sixties, because I shopped there when I was in college.

I love how all these videos assume these super powerful families didn't do anything to teach their offspring how to retain their wealth, considering they worked so insanely hard, killed, stole, cheated, lied, blackmailed their way to get the fortune.... and the idea that they would do nothing at all to make sure it was retained, insanely doubtful and absurd.

When you're at a country picnic celebrating the 4th of July with your aunt & uncle at age 9 and you're talking the ear off a very lovely woman because you get along better with adults than kids and your uncle comes over and whispers in your ear "You know, that's Mrs. Rockefeller" and you're suddenly dumbstruck. That was the first time he or my aunt has done that to me but definitely not the last. I was actually kind of hoping to find out which Rockefeller she was married to from this video LoL but she wasn't on it. I suspect her husband is a descendent of William.
