For a band on the field, their balance and blend is perfect. It sounds just like a stage!

Unfortunately my band didn't make it to state. We ended up getting 10th place in the Finals, but I really think these guys deserved that ring. They are great marchers and musicians.
@LeBashfulBadger8 жыл бұрын
The thing that picks these guys apart is how much they work together. A lot of bands, mine included, seem much more like a bunch of individuals playing all at different volumes, and I'm sure Marcus emphasizes these kinds of things. Also, no matter how easy or hard their drill is, they are clean as fuck. I like you guys a lot, but don't let Flower Mound kick your ass this year please xD

How do they achieve that sound?
@takigan Жыл бұрын
The middle schools are heavily invested in making sure every player can sound like their instrument should sound. So even the last chair Marcus kid will sound reasonably close to what a professional would sound like, at least on one single note. A lot of time is spent on breathing properly, placing the tongue in the perfect spot to get the cleanest note start, practicing note starts so that all students enter at the exact same time, making sure the air is supported through the sound and making sure everyone releases at the exact same time. At most schools you have at least a few players who can do this. At Marcus it's at least 80% of the band. Also at least 80% of the band is in private lessons so everyone is getting weekly help from a professional to sound as good as they possibly can. In other words very few kida play with bad sounds (even the last chair players) so the overall sound has very few impurities.

Hate to be the one to rain on the Marcus parade but this is going to be a very tough year if the Area C competition had anything to say about it.There just might be a new state marching champ. Ironically though the title will stay in Flower Mound just belonging to a different school.
@adithyaprabakaran11587 жыл бұрын
For real, Wylie and McKinney Boyd are starting to make a statement for themselves. Both of them should be at state soon, not just one of them.
@medieval50017 жыл бұрын
@Adithya I personally didn't find Wylie's final performance to be that great and personally thought Mckinnwy Boyd would move on and North Mesquite would be the alternate, but then again my seats weren't the greatest so who knows the forms could have looked alot better for the judges. Personally I feel North Mesquite is the band to look out for as the up and coming star because they were a younger band than 2 years ago, and if they truly Hunger for State I can see them moving on in 2.
@adithyaprabakaran11587 жыл бұрын
Kyler Wortham on a regular basis, Wylie hadn't played their show well. they really stepped it up in finals. that's why Boyd unfortunately didn't go

Just going to leaves these right here... let me know how class 6A is doing today. Class 4A in 1997-98 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brKFp6h0tL_XdXk.html Class 5A in 1996 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/beCCo7Kj28yVqZc.html Both would probably beat current 6A.

@takigan7 жыл бұрын
No they wouldn't....not with the way Marcus, Hebron and Flower Mound are performing these days. I will say if Marcus, Hebron and FM (all from the same district) weren't in the mix, you would have a case. '97 Poteet definitely plays with an extremely tight projecting sound without that distorted trainhorn element that a lot of the high-level bands of that era had...That sound would certainly put them in finals in this day and time, provided they could achieve the expanded dynamic range that amplification allows for these days.....but in any case, they lack visual polish. Look at that horrible bouncy upper body carriage at 5:18. That would not fly in the Top 5 in 6A these days.....not with the money that the 6A bands invest in visual staff that Poteet certainly didn't have back then. As for Westfield.....that was a particularly strong year for Westfield and it's much harder to single out individual components that differentiate it from the 6A medalists from the current era when listening to audio pulled from a VHS tape that's zoomed out into the stratosphere and blurred to all foggy hell. I do think Westfield would still lose...but I do respect your opinion if you think they would win.

Sorry, color me unimpressed. The opening arrangement of Reed's Russian Christmas Music comes straight from the Santa Clara Vanguard's 1987 program. I remember seeing it at the time and being blown away by its originality. Marcus doing it this year is just a pale imitation of the real deal. Also, pretty sure that the arrangements of Sabre Dance and the Russian Easter Overture have been done before and done better when they were premiered by drum and bugle corps back in the 70s and 80s. I can see why Marcus won state, but there are marching bands doing far more interesting programs with worthwhile, unfamiliar music and not reheated DCI leftovers...
@AirstrikeRhino8 жыл бұрын
+cptx1970 And Russian Christmas Music existed before DCI did it... it's not reheated if you saw it in 1987... IT WAS 1987! These kids weren't even born yet. Also, why are you comparing high school marching bands to world class drum corps? That's really unfair to these folks.
