Rocket League has a lot of different mechanics that are used to hit the ball. Terms like flick, aerial, dribble, and even freestyle are common knowledge even to the newest Rocket League player. But there are other mechanics have less descriptive names: Musty Flick, Maktuf Reset, Breezi Flick, Doomsee Dish and so on. These special moves often have a story and player that explain how they came to be and got their name. But not every mechanic in Rocket League ends up with a name that sticks. In this video we will explore the history behind some Rocket League mechanics that started out with very different names. If you've been playing long enough terms like Air Drag, Tarzan Swing, Jump Reset, or even No-Flip might bring back some memories, but you are new to the game, you probably have never heard of any of these at all. Make sure you stick around until the end, because whether new or old though, you probably have never heard the full TRUE story behind Musty and his flick.

Huge props on the amount of research that went into this. I myself forgot about Serpents Kiss, so the fact you got it in the video is remarkable lmao! To this day I haven't seen a clip/video that showcased a "reset" off the ceiling that came before my video, so even with the reach of my channel in early 2016 it never became a thing and was forgotten until it started to be in montages as a revolutionary ceiling reset/jump reset mechanic. The thing about calling it just a "backflip flick" is it doesn't adequately describe a very important nuance of it. You can do a backflip to flick it. Not nearly as useful, but you can. You can do a backward backflip flick. The Musty requires your nose simply be pitched -90 degrees down, but is a backflip where you're right-side up at the start of the backflip while traveling forward. It's really hard to adequately name that one by mechanic description alone.

A while back I found a “mechanic” which was actually a replicable game-breaking glitch. When the f1 car debuted, you could crash the game for all players in the lobby if you did a diagonal dodge demo while using the f1 car. I talked to two psyonix devs on reddit about it and they got my game files and crash reports and swept it under the rug. A hotfix was released two days later and the glitch couldn’t be replicated. I remain without a white hat lmao

Interesting, did you save replays/footage? I would love to see the glitch. Though you wouldn't have been able to get a white hat anyways as by that time they were no longer being given out as explained in my video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6x8ZK2cy5-0nH0.html

@@Rocket_Sledge I don’t think this is an instance of “white hacking.” The issue does not give the person causing the glitch any competitive advantage (If the game crashes for everyone that means no one is granted a win). Also, it’s not exploitable where players data could be compromised. This would be more like when players found out that the ball can go in through the back of the goal in the throw back stadium. Not a white hat hack, but a unintended simple glitch.

Johnny usually has pretty good hot takes but I remember the whole collection of don't-name-a-mechanic-after-a-player rants and how ridiculous it was. Calling Kuxir pinches "quarter-field pinches" and calling that 180-backflip flip by Mognus that you saw the "Mognus flick" for literal months out of principle, because "if we can call a Musty flick a Musty flick, we can call this a Mognus flick", even though many 180-backflip flicks were scored up to that point. But I think he was just looking for a hill to die on with that whole argument.

Kuxir pinch, doomsy dish, musty flick, squishy save. You hear them so many times on RLCS broadcasts that it always seems silly to try to pretend they're not legitimate. Not to mention the fact that it's so much easier to have a single word term for something instead of describing each step that goes into the move like it's a freestyle competition lol

@@JMW566 honestly, seeing these complaints is really interesting to me as someone coming from the FGC where tech is often named after a player or sometimes even a word from another language (oki is a good example). Imo, I understand trying to find a more simplistic name for newcomers, but I feel like once it becomes a mouthful, it becomes harder to describe and more confusing for newcomers. It's easier to associate a piece of tech to a term that is 1-2 words long. Especially when a more descriptive name honestly probably sounds more confusing for newer players.

I love Johnny as a caster and a pioneer of RL, but his idea that you should call mechanics something descriptive or informative is plain wrong. In football, two of the most iconic skill moves you can do are the Cruyff turn and the Maradona. We also have McGeady spin and Berbaspin, named after players too. It's a legendary achievement to have a move named after you, and frankly it's good for new players to hear these names and look them up. I'm not sure how they'd find out about a musty flick without knowing who musty is anyway.

Some years ago I discovered an odd wave-dash mechanic which unpredictably changes the direction of the ball to get past your opponent. It is absurdly difficult to do and would argue not very effective in game to use as an actual mechanic and become part of the RL "META". I should probably revisit it to see what I can do with it, but it is difficult to get enough power on it. The move starts with you behind the ball, and you wave-dash diagonally in such as way where you suddenly appear next to the ball. The move appears to be over until the car turns on its side and flicks the ball in the opposite direction. This happens due to delaying your diagonal wave-dash by initially cancelling the flip, then at the last moment, let go of your directional button and the car will continue its movement by the car suddenly snapping itself sideways, popping itself up as well as hitting the ball away. If you were to perform it successfully, you could seriously fake out your opponent. But again, it'd be way too difficult, and probably a little ineffective. Another mechanic that is actually very effective which people do use, but perhaps not knowingly, is when you jump, turn your car to the left or right while in the air, and then upon landing, the direction change of your car is rapid and sudden. You could use this in place of the diagonal wave-dash cancel I mentioned above, to appear from behind the ball, land next to it, to then have the ball suddenly change direction in a more violent manner. I guess it would be like performing an instant hook shot which can really be done from any position. This mechanic can also be performed to attempt close goal-line saves as you try to catch up to the ball heading to your net. You time the jump, land slightly behind the ball facing sideways, so you can change the direction of the ball quickly.

That guy got really famous in the hobby, but nothing near Musty levels. It's interesting that one trick can get tied to one person and then accepted and used by a community.

When I learned serpent's kiss way back in the day I learned it was the term for a 360 degree drift from the wall to the ceiling then falling off, in your example it shows what happens when you are late on switching yaw inputs or just half of a serpents kiss. I learned it was basically just using the weird curve to accelerate the 360 drift and to add some style before a ceiling shot, even still use them to this day doing serpents kiss to muirie reset kinda set ups. You can also jump after the serpent's kiss. Maybe I learned it wrong, but that was one of the first things I ever learned in Rocket League way back and hadnt been in the freestyle scene or really anything at the time. Never been corrected on it from my friends I freestyle with now, but I was under the impression when talking with other freestylers it was the 360 drift on the ceiling curve that classified it as a serpents kiss, you can see Mertzy initiate a drift and turn to one direction in your example drifting off the ceiling, it just lacks the switch to the other turning direction and reversing it that it may have evolved into, but it wasn't just a regular ceiling shot (or so I have believed it, but maybe someone else can correct me)
@Rocket_Sledge
@Rocket_Sledge 2 жыл бұрын
You are right that the first time he presented it a "360 drift" was explained as being part of the move (though he does add that the best part is the ability to have a delayed dodge). When he mentions it again in another tutorial he does seem to imply that it is the very same move as the ceiling shot that people were now doing (and doesn't mention or show the 360 this time). Here are the clips (should be time-stamped for you) 1st time: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mp-HmpaC18W2qGw.html 2nd mention: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJuJdM-CscXHkpc.html

Preferably you should hit a backboard so it will also become second mechanic: "Crossbar Challenge". At ideal conditions enemy should pick up a ball off the rebound and drive it in your net. It is the third mechanic - "Great Passu".

@Rocket_Sledge
@Rocket_Sledge 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly that's the story behind a lot of mechanic "discoveries" as the players that become associated with it didn't necessarily do it first but instead popularized it. It's usually impossible to know if someone did it first.

i agree with johnny's opinion on named player moves, i think it's easier for someone who just started watching to understand. if you go into a scene for the first time and every time a new move happens you have to look it up, it kinda takes away the magic.
@Captaine_Crunche

you cant call a musty flick a backflip flick, breezi flick sure but not a musty, and people saying those lengthy weird names for mechanics takes away the magic much more

I've never understood being annoyed at naming moves after players. Sure, if it was really forced, but if the community widely adopts it then it becomes forced and confusing to call it anything else. Especially true when the non-player name version is either a mouthful to say, or is not specific enough to be a good description (like backflip flick for a musty flick). I doubt having a few moves named after players actually puts many people off, it's really not hard to learn when the names are repeated often enough, and it can help immortalise legendary players. I don't think anyone gets put off football because a certain type of penalty is named after Antonín Panenka!

It’s sad to see people who are trying to find and post possible new mechanics get downvoted immediately due to people not wanting that to sprout them into possible recognition
@Rocket_Sledge
@Rocket_Sledge 2 жыл бұрын
This is because 99% of "new mechanic" posts are flicks with a slight variation. Actual new or interesting things *do* make it on Reddit though so while it can be harsh it's mostly warranted. My contest was made with the idea that it would give people a chance to show something off with out having to get Reddit's approval though, and with it being mostly for fun I'm also looking for stuff that is not that serious.

I haven't looked much into this yet but the dates don't make sense. The air dash was found in January 2017 and only existed for a few days. Linkuru's training pack challenge was April 2019 so I'm not sure how it would be related.

I myself am trash at the game called "Rocket League" as it takes a lot of skill and time, which I could put in and have but have seen little success having only reached to c2 at my peak and currently c1 as we speak. Hopeful I can get better but with have the mechanics work it is HIGHLY unlikely. However there is always hope!
