Celtic Frost isn't some obscure band only a few too cool for the room scenesters have heard of though. Anyone who's into metal beyond the mainstream knows about them and their importance to the genre. This is like hearing a bunch of Pink Floyd fans go "King Crimson who?".

@@stephenw2992 - Celtic Frost are one of the first bands that paved the way for "extreme metal." They've influenced everyone from Death, High On Fire, to Nirvana. That covers a wide range of bands. Yes Celtic Frost were never big in terms of albums sales, but I think influence is more important than gold and platinum records.

@@butchvito They may have supposedly influenced other bands, but the comment is about why no 'normies' have heard of them. They didnt make music that the masses liked. So many people don't know Celtic Frost, they were called Hellhammer back in 1982 and had a more extreme sound than Venom and Metallica at the time, they're also responsible for being a huge influence for death metal and black metal. Celtic Frost later changed its name to Triptykon, its really astonishing to see how many people don't know Celtic Frost but listen to extreme metal.

I am old enough to remember everything from the start (I also have met the guys in Montreal, great times), let's say that their sound was special but to go as far as saying that what they did was more radical than Venom is a stretch that I refuse to take.

@wodensthrone5215 3 жыл бұрын
@@martinberthiaume4971 Hellhammer has a more extreme sound than Venom, if you think Satanic Rites doesn't sound more extreme than the first three Venom albums, thats on you. Not to mention Bathory left them both in the dust because Bathory literally created the sound for black metal, every black metal band in the 90s copied bathorys sound and production. Euronymous was the only one who gave a shit about Venom while no one else did because Venom was seen as a joke band. And the only bm band to use Celtic Frosts sound at the time was Darkthrone because Fenriz is obsessed with how they sound. Second Wave black metal literally discarded a bunch of first wave bands and just stuck with the sound of Bathory and Celtic Frost because no second wave band was going around sounding like Bulldozer or Mercyful Fate, lol.

Celtic Frost was a very influencial band back in the 80's, so was Metallica. But the unfortunate death of Cliff destroyed the young metal creators. Master of Puppets or possibly and Justice for All was the end of Metallica as I knew it. I just fed into the various other metal artists in the 80's back then; Kreator, Destruction, Slayer, Omen, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Omen, Agent Steel, Pariah, Mercyful Fate, Fates Warning and the like. We were never short of 'real' metal bands; Metallica sold out for known status. They took their own path and real metal faded out of view for Metallica once that crappy 'Black' album was unfortunately released; that's when Metallica started playing Abba and Bread songs. They have and will suck for the rest of their tenure as they attempt to return back to 'Master' days and 'Lightning' days, 'Ride the Lightning' has the ability to hold up to Celtic Frosts 'Morbid Tales,' and possibly 'Kill em' All' and 'Master of Puppets' in all retrospect, nevertheless what Metallica has written in the last thirty-five years has by far sucked major crap. They should have hung up their music after '...and Justice for All' became complete. And for that matter, Celtic Frost should have given it up after 'Into the Pandemonium,' although 'Vanity/Nemesis' and 'Monotheist' is also two exceptional albums in their tenure as well. So to make a long story short both of these bands were gone in the 80's, one seeking major stardom while the other ran out of idea's. -Jeff Henneman-

@@tonytaurus3676 i think in the documentary about the band, the late Martin Ain (which the covers were in tribute for) banged Tom's then(?) wife. Idk what happened but i think they they eventually chilled out and continued making Into Pandemonium. On why Hellhammer became Celtic Frost? Simple, Hellhammer was one of the divisive metal band in the press back then (think Deafheaven or Cynic). Their music was way too depprresing, too primitive and (in Tom's words) too amateurish, so when they became more capable and ambitious musicians they changed their stage names and band name to Celtic Frost so the Hellhammer association would end. Funnily enough, Hellhammer's demos would eventially become more respected and celebrated due to how much it paved the way for the 2nd wave of black metal. Even Tom, who once hated his work in Hellhammer, eventually started to play them live again. Fun fact: Celtic Frost opened for Metallica back then, Tom and Lars would chat before and after the shows.

Tom is just complaining for the sake of complaining. Besides, why did he even need to bring up James's politics or pastimes in this? It quite literally has nothing to do with the subject at hand, lmao.
