From the wiki: This song is from the perspective of a woman who has gotten an abortion and states it was a miscarriage. This song has made me cry so hard, it not only reminds me of all the lost lives in the world from abortion but also from school shootings, and just how terrible all the constant death is. We never think about it because we are so involved in our own life, but people die every day, people cry every day, and people feel guilt every day. It's just a very meaningful song especially the mother's genuine care for the child and the regret of what she has done to it. I wish we could see more of this song or songs like it openly talking about burning issues. Melanie really is an amazing artist! 🤍

if i were to accidentally get pregnant i would never ever keep it (even if i ever change my mind on wanting children, pregnancy is not for me) so im 200% pro choice but this breaks my heart to a million different pieces bc 1) the guilt and 2) she kept the facade for long enough that her partner was all excited and they had the baby stuff in his little room etc 3) as it's her secret it will never just a "hard choice" it will be literally a lost son and that breaks people inside in such a irreversible way that they might divorce anyway

Personally I don't think the character was guilty for having an abortion per say, but lying about it since her husband was excited for a kid. Also, judging by the lyrics "babies having babies" the woman was pretty young and wasn't ready for kids just yet. But makes me wonder how young for her to have a husband. I honestly don't like the narrative that all abortions are traumatic. I think most find it a relief. Most people who feel guilty, comes from a background where abortion is looked down on by their community, but you gotta think what's best for YOU.

I feel like you definitely right. but this is about her lying about the abortion because she didn't want a divorce from her husband. so she's living with the lie and played it off as a miscarriage because she wasn't ready but complied because she was scared of losing him. in other words: she loves her husband and doesn't want a divorce, nor a baby, so she lied because her husband would divorce her if he knew she aborted instead of it being an "accident".

Now I understand why this didn't made it to Cry Baby Because this is not Cry Baby's POV but i have a Theory This might probably be the POV of Cry Baby's Mom and I think that Cry Baby is supposed to have a sister but The mum aborted the baby the probable reason why Her husband became cold with her and had an affair with another woman. this song is so beautiful. She probably supports womens choice to have an abortion but still empathizes with the baby. Maybe people don't consider fetus a baby but i think this song is about females miscarriages and abortions and the shame that comes with abortions. I don't think it's nice to have one but i don't think it's nice to have women have a baby and not be able to take care of it which in return turns into neglect............................ I was lucky my mom had support around her but many don't have support around them........

I believe Melanie is pro abortion also this song is from a songwriting perspective of a woman who has to hide her miscarriage bc fear of judgement or abandonment. I would say it’s more a statement about the shame associated with abortions
