Brian May is known for using a custom-built guitar, the Red Special, which he helped design with his father in the early 1960s. The Red Special features a unique wiring system with three individual pickups and a series of switches that allow for a wide range of different pickup combinations.
The guitar selector switch on the Red Special is a six-way rotary switch that allows Brian May to select between different pickup configurations. These configurations include single coil, humbucking, and out-of-phase settings, giving him a diverse range of tones to work with.
Additionally, Brian May also uses a custom-made treble booster pedal to further shape his tone and achieve his signature sound. This pedal helps to push the amp into overdrive and adds sustain and compression to the signal, giving his guitar solos a distinct and powerful sound.

Thanks James! You are really working hard to share your knowledge of the RS. Very much appreciated! I still don't get that nice 'fat' tone and a great guitar player can do it at my guitar, so it is me:-(. Do you have a video of how to attack the strings to get that full sound? I use a 6 pence but it still sounds way too clean. Couldn't find it in your long range of video's....but there are so many that i might have overlooked that one. If not it might be a good item for a new video:-). Thanks for all your work!

ohh if i wasnt born in Brazil id buy a Red Special for me, it's so cool to understand more of how it makes those iconic sounds i do wonder what is the configuration Brian most used on live shows, i know he has one but i can't remember which

Depends what I’m playing. I like using my fingers mostly. Brian May uses fingers more than people realise. Not always a sixpence

@@Rocklicks72don't mind them, it's true your guitar went out of tune but god damn, which guitar doesn't do that? Strats are known for refusing to stay on tune😂
