Here we get a classic 1980's cheeseburger and install an bipolar regulated power supply to take a 9VAC transformer input. Sound samples DI'd this time, as that's how the device was intended to be used & for a true representation of it's frequency response. The biggest drawcard of this one is it's compression, which there is no control over, but it's proper dialed in just right. We've all heard this on 80's pop records now that we've isolated the sounds.

Great job showing us the work when it's already finished. I'm sure that's super useful to anyone looking to learn how to do it, and clicked on this video expecting to see actual work being done. Yay for clickbait that ends up being a bog standard Rockman demo.

If you're able to rise above the snark and realize that maybe I'm very busy and maybe this isn't an instructional channel for noobs to follow in a noob like fashion and hurt themselves or destroy their gear, send me an email and we can discuss the project under development for drop in pcbs for this purpose. These don't come along very often here. This was also a rush-job so the work took preference over a silly KZfaq video.

You can also hear the low latency from the Allen & Heath ZEDi8, compared to the camera mic. I was able to get the latency below 8ms glitch-free with my crappy laptop, which is pretty impressive.

I had one years ago, the original one, not the X100 version; I gave it to a kid, along with a no-name guitar. Sonically they're kind of a one trick pony, and the switches and controls have a tendency to become noisy and intermittent, especially the headphone jack (and the frequency response of the original headphones was designed to sonically compliment the device; it won't sound the same with replacement phones). Come to think of it, somewhere around here I have another Rockman, which I had picked up with a whole lot of stuff, effects pedals and such, at a flea market. Converting the power supply is a nice idea, since modern AA batteries are such leaker's, Especially when you wire them together in series because there always seems to be one battery that's a little off from the others and it takes a beating until finally it gives up the ghost and spills its guts. Perhaps a simpler way would be to put 2, 3 or 4 9Volt batteries in parallel and stuff 'em into the battery case, if they'll fit. I'll bet a couple of the new Eveready lithium non- rechargeable batteries would power this thing pretty well, But it sounds like you'd still need a voltage regulator for the 6 V supply....

@@BradsGuitarGarage I have the X100, but my power supply was robbed of the end that goes into the Rockman. I remember years ago, (When I was dumb and in my teens), I cut the end off the adapter to use elsewhere. I still have the X100 Rockman and the adapter, without the end LOL

Hey Brad, Great video mate really appreciate the indepth review and look inside the unit. I'm actually building an X100 rev 10 from scratch. Not sure if you're able to help, but any chance of getting some close up pics of both boards component sides? Basically I'm putting together the BOM and want to verify the component values of a real unit against the schematics I have (especially the caps). Great playing BTW too! Cheers mate.

How would I wire in a MP1584EN DC-DC Buck Converter Adjustable Power Supply Module to the Rockman X100? I know how to wire the MP1584EN together but I was told I need to remove the 2 - 220uf caps @ C1 & C2 (which I don't see on the Rockman X100) because These modules won't boot with those large caps directly on the supply.

Tom sold the rights to Dunlap. I think he was satisfied with how successful he was in the effects manufacturing business. Dunlap of course still makes the Rockman Guitar Ace, but it does fall a bit short of the original. You can EQ it, and it helps it out some. I own a Rockman Distortion Generator. It is part of the rack modules SRD put out, I believe mid 80s is the date on it. To me, there's no other single device that makes the Boston sound.

I was given one of these a while back but tried to rig a 9v battery in it could you explain the wiring of the battery I'd like to put a lithium battery in it with a USB c charger
@BradsGuitarGarage
@BradsGuitarGarage Жыл бұрын
That's not easy. It's a bipolar +/-6V supply, not sure what charger module or batteries you're planning to use and whether it would work. I'd suggest using a 12v battery and a DC-DC converter which may not be available in 6V as it's not a voltage generally used for digital gear. You may be able to use a 9v output and regulate it down with a linear regulator. No simple solution to that unless you develop your own power supply from the ground up, I'm afraid.

Nobody makes an MN3011 chip, currently. Companies like XVIVE make some replacements for other MN series chips. I can not speak for the likelyhood of it having failed in your particular unit. You'd need to test it to find out.
