Yep, it's all broken down shit to me too, or it wouldn't be in the queue or on my bench. Wow, that is some creative layout there with E-lytic caps in the middle of PCB mounted valve sockets. Maybe we could zip tie some power resistors to them too. Be sure to put some sink compound on them too.

You have a lot of great tools, I don’t think many people would have an adjustable heat gun. Do you use it for work on gear with SMD devices?
@BradsGuitarGarage4 күн бұрын
Yes, mostly for small BGA chips and for heatshrink. I generally hand-solder smaller SMD devices, but the hot air station can also help out there with pre-heating for large ground planes etc.

@@BradsGuitarGarage I had meant to tell you that I found your videos on fixing a SF Twin helpful. I did end up getting the wax off the boards and cleaning them with isopropyl alcohol twice but the board was too far gone. The customer had a limit on what he was prepared to pay so I had to use tag strips to isolate the components from the board. The washing did help getting rid of the thump from the oscillator but not as much as lifting the components off the board. The amp was very quiet noise wise and it sounded very good. The power transformer was blown and I learnt a thing or two about rewound power transformers.

Oooof, sounds like a nasty job. I hate those ones. Very hard to make a living when a string of them comes in.

@@BradsGuitarGarage I had the amp for a while and it just kept developing new faults despite replacing the filter caps, all the electros, the plate resistors, a couple of valves, a pin from the power socket mysteriously broke and hit the filaments. Even the intensity pot for the tremolo was a problem as the taper was off (33K at the mid point) and nothing happened on the dial till it was at “5” silly stuff really. Glad to see the back of that amp, but it did sound good when it was finished.

One of the biggest challenges is to end the work day, have time for myself and not feel guilty about it. A beer or whisky used to put the full-stop on the end of the workday, but when not drinking at all, I feel like I should continue working in some way, be it design or admin work, until I go to bed. This has been the case for every Dry July I've participated in since 2021. This year, I'm reading a book, learning Japanese (very slowly!) or practicing guitar, as well as finally watching Peaky Blinders in full after dinner.

In your opinion what is the best Markbass amp you've heard?
@BradsGuitarGarage6 күн бұрын
They all sound pretty similar, to be honest. Clean transparent power. Speaker size is a big factor, however. I haven't tried the current tube preamp models yet, but I'm not a fan of sub-minature tubes anyway.

Hi Brad. In your opinion, can this amp comfortably run 6 ohm speakers?
@BradsGuitarGarage6 күн бұрын
I would not recommend it. Stick to the user manual recommendations for any given amplifier. However, if it's just a matter of a 6R tweeter, I'd confidently use it, as they likely have attenuation and there's not much energy being transferred there anyway.
