I’ve used both kits and the Epoxy Shield didn’t last but a few years. Hot tire pick up was the biggest problem. Sanded it all off and went with Rock Solid. It’s been on for about fifteen years. The problem I had with Rock Solid was a few batches never dried. I contacted the company and they were aware of certain batches being defective and replaced it. Recoated the sticky areas but it still picked up dirt over the years. I have had zero problems with hot tire problems with Rock Solid. Now the clear is pealing off in front of the garage door and assuming it’s from the UV rays.

Hi Johnny. 15 years ago was before Rust-Oleum acquired Citadel Coatings which developed RockSolid. Back then, the RockSolid kit was a polyurea and not a Polycuramine like it is now. Polyurea is the better coating, but could be problematic at times. That is why they developed Polycuramine. If you scrape up the clear coat that is peeling and then rough up the entire floor with 120-grit sandpaper, you can apply another clear coat to the surface.

Great video. Hope i found this before I had applied the coating. Is there a way to fix hot tire pickup? I am having hot tire pickup on one side of the 2 car garage even though I applied the clear coat on top of the color coat.
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 5 ай бұрын
If you are using RockSolid, then the issue is most likely poor concrete prep, oil stains, or some other contaminant on that side of the garage. RockSolid rarely pulls up from hot tires with proper concrete prep. We would recommend a good degreasing (if oil stains are present) and then a more aggressive concrete etch to prevent it from happening again. EpoxyShield, on the other hand, has a reputation for peeling up despite how well the concrete prep is.

I applied Epoxy Shield 15+ years ago. South facing garage with LOTS of sun on the garage floor. Zero yellowing of the product, which is now just needing to be redone. Has been a very good product overall. They should put more color chips in the kit. One pound for a two car garage is insufficient. I did have minimal hot tire pickup.

Very well presented with great details. I just painted my garage floor last week, but also found that the Rock Solid left a lot of discolored areas, probably due to concrete absorption of the product as you mentioned. You stated that re-painting can be done up to 7 days afterwards, but I will be out of town and won't be able to repaint until perhaps 10 to 12 days with a kit that I ordered on Amazon. Is there a lot of risk by waiting this long? Can I prepare the surface to make it work without having problems with peeling?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 10 ай бұрын
Hi Randy. There is no risk in waiting longer. However, you will need to prep the surface properly once you exceed the recoat window. This requires deglossing the surface by roughing it up with 120-150 grit sandpaper. A quick way is to rent a floor maintainer and go over the surface with a green scrub pad (dry) and then scuff up the corners and edges with sandpaper. Vac/sweep and then wipe the surface down with denatured alcohol or equivalent. Once it has evaporated, you can recoat.

Great video, very informative and lots of details. Would it make sense to use an ExpoxyShield as the "base" and then a RockSolid clear topcoat, would it make it more durable or are the 2 products not compatible? Would you recommend another layer of clear topcoat every few years (5-10 years maybe?) thanks
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 4 күн бұрын
Hi Jammykam. EpoxyShield and RockSolid are not compatible. You need to use one or the other as a system. EpoxyShield color coat with EpoxyShield clear coat for example. Same for RockSolid. If your goal is to achieve a longer wearing and more durable coating, then we don't recommend either of these products. There are much better coatings to choose from. The two we talk about here are the most well known since they can be found in home improvement centers. Check out our links in the KZfaq description for better options.

Great review guys! Quick question: I’m prepping my floor with concrete degreaser. There are 3 spots I’ve been going over multiple times but when I spray water back on, the spots are still hydrophobic. Should I keep going over the spots until that stops or should I be fine at this point and should move on to acid?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 9 ай бұрын
Hi Mark. If the concrete repels water, then it will repel the coating. Go ahead and etch and then hit the spots again with a degreaser. The etching process opens the concrete pores and allows the degreaser to penetrate better. If you are still having problems with it, there are some good enzymatic oil cleaners that work, but they do require the time to do the job. We have an article about cleaning oil stains that you can read here: allgaragefloors.com/remove-oil-stains-from-your-garage-floor/

Fantastic video. I've been having this debate with myself about an upcoming basement floor renovation, and your comparison just alleviated several of my questions. I do have one follow up: Should we be concerned with using something like Concrete Moisture Stop Fortifying Sealer or another moisture barrier prior to either Rocksolid or EpoxyShield? My own application will likely be Rocksolid on a concrete basement pad, it doesn't have standing water or seepage but does have high humidity. From what I've read, the lack of a moisture barrier may lead to bubbling or delamination with other Epoxy coatings. I don't know whether that holds true for these two products.
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors Жыл бұрын
Yes, trapped moisture vapor below a coating can cause delamination issues. Whenever applying a coating to a basement, we highly recommend conducting a simple moisture test first. This article explains how and why it should be done: allgaragefloors.com/concrete-moisture-test/ If you do have moisture, then the next step is to conduct a calcium chloride test to determine how much moisture you have. Most coatings will only withstand up to 3 lbs. Moisture Stop is essentially a concrete densifier. It will slow down moisture intrusion and sometimes stop it, but it all depends on how much moisture vapor is getting through. The less moisture there is, the better it works.

Great video. Will the EpoxyShield really cover a standard 2 car garage? Also, their clearcoat seems a bit expensive. Could you recommend less pricey one? Finally, if these two were not available, what low cost, DIY garage floor coating would you recommend?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 10 ай бұрын
Hi Melvin. The 2.5-car kit will cover up to 500 sq. ft. For the first coat on bare concrete, you need to reduce that number by 10% to account for the concrete surface. If it was a second coat, you can almost get the 500 sq. ft. The number one rule of clear coats is that they need to perform just as well if not better than the color coat. The clear coat is the one that gets the traffic and abuse. You never want to put an inferior clear coat over a color coat. It just reduces the overall performance of your coating. The EpoxyShield Clear is the proper clear coat to apply. It actually performs a bit better than the color coat since it's a 100% solids epoxy. The EpoxyShield line of epoxy coatings is one of the least expensive concrete coating products you can purchase for a garage floor.

Great information! Came across this as I have a brand new enclosed trailer that I want to coat the plywood floor. With the current temps like they are, looks like the Rocksolid will work fine. Total square area of the ramp and floor is 160SqFt. Being wood, should that be sufficient? Also, the ramp really needs to have good traction. Does the anti-skid additive really work well?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 7 ай бұрын
Wood can absorb more coating than concrete, so plan on two coats for a proper application. You will need to rough up the surface with 80-grit sandpaper for prep. The anti-slip media meets ADA requirements for a level surface. It needs to be added to the final coat. We would recommend increasing the amount used by 50%. for better traction on a ramp. Either that or you can use a more coarse aluminum oxide anti-slip. The downfall to that though is that it makes it harder to clean since wants to grab anything you use on the surface.

Is there any clear coat sold in hardware stores/amazon that can be used as a topcoat for the epoxy shield and will reduce or prevent yellowing? I got a good deal on leftover epoxyshield from a friend and will be using for an enclosed trailer for my mowing business. The ramp will be opened and exposed to the sun constantly which is why I’m looking to reduce the yellowing. The trailer is basically new and hasn’t been used but one or two times. I have applied zinser bin on the floor assuming I would be using deck paint. Will this primer work with the epoxyshield as well?

Hi Shane. Any clear coat you apply will allow the UV rays to pass through to the epoxy coat and cause it to amber (yellow). Polyurethane and polyurea clear coats will not amber, but the epoxy will. This article explains more: allgaragefloors.com/why-epoxy-coatings-turn-yellow/

We are glad it helped. Do not apply EpoxyShield if the air temperature and/or temperature of the concrete will be below 60 degrees during application and while it cures ( minimum three days). @allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 4 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. Your comment was being held for some reason and we just found it. The most important temperature to pay attention to is the slab temp. That is the temperature that the epoxy will adopt within a few minutes of being applied. Warming the garage helps, but it takes time for the slab temp to rise. This is when it's a good idea to purchase a $20 infrared thermometer to see what the slab temp is before you begin heating. It can take upwards of a week for the surface temperature of the slab to come up. Also, pay close attention to areas near the garage door and man door. Cold, drafty air can run across those areas and affect how the epoxy cures compared to the rest of the floor.

Excellent video!! I bought a Rock Solid kit, color high-gloss tan, perhaps five years ago and I am just getting around to applying it. Two questions. 1. Does this product have a shelf life, or should the burst packets still be good to go? 2. My 2.5 car kit will cover 400 sq ft. My garage is close to 600 ft, which means I need to buy additional product. Rustoleum does not appear to make the tan Rock Solid anymore - it is not an option on the Home Depot website. Can I use Epoxy Shield to cover the balance of the garage? (The video suggests two coats to enhance the gloss; will that create an acceptable match? I am planning using the flakes, which may help to hide the change in color tone.)
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 8 ай бұрын
Hi Brad. First and foremost, EpoxyShield is an epoxy coating and RockSolid is a polycuramine coating. They cannot be intermixed or used together in any way. They are both made by Rust-Oleum, but that is where the similarities end. RockSolid has a max shelf life of 60 months if it has been stored in the temperature range of 45-90 degrees. There is a very high chance that components have settled in the individual burst pouches. You would need to make sure that each burst pouch is massaged well to mix the components inside before breaking the seal to mix. Otherwise, you can have color and curing issues. RockSolid still makes gloss tan. You can find it here at Amazon: amzn.to/3sEdSak It's much cheaper than HomeDepot. Keep in mind that the two colors most likely will not match very well since the batches are almost 5 years apart. If you want to ensure a good color match, we recommend batch mixing. This requires cutting the corners of the colored resin burst pouches and mixing the two in a measured bucket. You then cut the corner of one pouch with the activator and pour it into a clean bucket. Add the proper measured amount from the mixed tan-colored bucket. Mix the two for a few minutes and then pour it out onto the concrete to apply. Once done, cut the corner of the remaining activator pouch and pour it into the tan color bucket, mix, and then apply. DO NOT mix two full kits together or the contents will get too warm and cure faster than you can apply it.

Whenever doing a floor sections, you always want to use a natural barrier as a stopping/dividing point. For example, terminate the coating at any contraction joint or sawcut in the concrete. Otherwise, the taped off section will stand out like a sore thumb once completed. Coatings do not blend together like paint does on a wall. It will be obvious where once section meets up with another. Keep in mind that though you will be using the same color, it will still look slightly different than the rest of the floor.

Hey James. First off... yes, you need to properly prep the surface of your concrete before applying a coating. RockSolid provides a citric acid etch in their kits. It sounds like you have a concrete sweating issue. I suggest reading the following article to help you determine if that is the case: allgaragefloors.com/how-to-stop-sweating-garage-floor/ If you have a sweating garage floor, then a coating will not stop it since it's a similar surface.

Do you have any data on applying either product to plywood, such as a floor in an enclosed cargo trailer?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 20 күн бұрын
Hi Ken. Both can be applied to a wood floor. It requires roughing up the surface with 60-80 grit sandpaper to remove any dirt and grime plus leftover contaminants from wood glue. RockSolid is the better choice of the two in terms of durability. Many times it requires two coats since wood is a more porous surface than concrete and both RockSolid and EpoxyShield are thin coatings. As a result, it typically requires two single car kits or one 2.5 car kit (2 burst pouches). The reason for this is that you can't let the mixed product sit the minimum 6-8 hours between recoats. An anti-slip media is required for the final coat or the surface will be very slippery when wet. There are much better coatings than these two that you could use. One example is single-part polyurea. It goes down much thicker, it does not require mixing two components (other than the color pack), it's UV stable, and much more durable. Plus, you can apply a single coat, seal the can back up, and then apply another coat 5-6 hours later. It actually costs less since you don't have to purchase as much material. We provide more details about single-part polyurea as well as links where you can purchase it here: allgaragefloors.com/polyurea-best-garage-floor-coating-kits/

Hi Roger. The primary purpose for Rust-Oleum Recoat Primer is to use it on bare concrete that has been sealed or older coatings (still adhered well) that will received a new coat. It is not a substitute for good floor prep for standard bare concrete. It's an acrylic product and does not adhere as strongly as RockSolid or EpoxyShield. If you were thinking of grinding your concrete for prep, there are much better products available to the public from concrete coating vendors online that perform so much better than these two. You just can't take shortcuts when it comes to coatings. 1-part epoxy is just acrylic concrete paint with 2-4% epoxy resin added. If you aren't parking your car in the garage, the cheapest and easiest solution is to just scrape the surface to remove any loose paint, lightly scuff the remainder with 150-grit sandpaper, and then apply more 1-part epoxy. If you want to apply RockSolid, EpoxyShield, or a better coating product, it's best to remove the paint first. How well a coating adheres depends on what it is adhered to. I hope that helps.

Primers for coatings are actual coatings. They aren't paint or concrete primer paint which are not compatible. EpoxyShield, RockSolid, etc. are thin residential coatings that are similar to the actual 2-part epoxy coating primers used for application of the better commercial quality coatings. The first coat of RockSolid acts like a primer if a second coat is required. This is why we recommend the better coatings in the video description above. There are links there to learn more.

Great vid! I just put Rock Solid in a basement work shop. The concrete which was about 50 years old, was recently ground down to a smooth-ish surface. I had 340 SF to cover, I used the 2.5 garage pack. The results were terrible. Extremely blotchy/patchy. The only good news is that Rustoleum is going to pay for a second 2.5 kit as they say that the only option is to add another coat. I am within the recoat window, so we should be good. Here is the bigger issue though. After applying it, I realize that I really don't like the glossy look. It literally reflects the bright LED lights in the ceiling so well that I can barely see when I am in there. Do you know of a way to reduce the gloss? Maybe sanding it (lightly) after its all done? Let me know. Thanks!

Hi Zach. Sorry for the late reply. We found your comment being held for review for some reason. The best way to reduce the gloss is to apply the RockSolid Clear coat with anti-slip media added. The clear coat is less glossy than the color coat and the anti-slip media will cut down on some of the gloss as well.

I have a year and half old home. The garage floor is pretty clean other than some dirt tracked in from other homes being built on the block. I have a couple hairline cracks here and there. It's a two car garage with a 4 foot wide extension. I figure maybe 450 sf and I have some 4" cement boarders before the sheetrocked walls. Puddles form from rain off my vehicles so I believe I'd have to etch the floor first, would you agree? I think the 500sf full broadcast option would suffice. Do you agree?

Hello Adam. Regardless of whether the concrete is new or old, it absolutely must be etched at a minimum. Puddles forming are not an indicator of whether or not concrete has a proper profile. We have a video that explains why concrete prep is essential here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebNkormSr92uaZs.htmlsi=roScTPv2p2Ni77oq A full broadcast option is excellent at hiding small hairline cracks and other small imperfections in the concrete. However, I hope you are not referring to RockSolid or EpoxyShield for a full broadcast. It will not work. At only 3 mils dry film thickness, they are far too thin to accept all those color flakes. In addition, the amount of clear coat kits you would need to purchase to properly cover the flakes puts you in the commercial quality price range for materials. There is a reason these kits only come with a small bag of color flakes to apply. There are far better DIY kits that provide the proper epoxy primer, high solids (3-4x thicker) epoxy color coats, and two coats of a high-performance clear that will not amber (turn yellow) from exposure to sunlight. Here is an example of such a kit: bit.ly/4abJGUV If you have any questions, just let us know.

Hi Mick. No, Rust-Oleum Recoat Primer is not for wood. It is designed to be applied to older coatings that are adhered well or bare concrete that has been previously sealed (not bare unsealed concrete). It's not like a primer for paint that can be applied to most surfaces. If you are applying RockSolid or EpoxyShield to wood, it will require that the surface be clean and roughed up with 60-grit sandpaper first. A minimum of two coats will need to be applied as well. Otherwise, the wood will absorb more of the coating and it will be too thin. The color and gloss will look blotchy and faded in areas.

@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors Ай бұрын
Hi Scott. No.... DO NOT use RockSolid for a full broadcast color flake application. There is a reason why these kits only come with a limited amount of color flakes. The coating is far to thin to accept all those flakes. Once you apply the flakes and then scrape them as required, you will have bare spots with the color coat showing. Full broadcast applications are for coating with a MINIMUM of 5-6 mils dry film thickness. High solids and 100% solids epoxy are typically 8-12 mils thick and most commonly used for full flake applications. RockSolid is only 3 mils. The color flakes when applied add approximately 5 mils of thickness. As a result, there is not enough RockSolid for the color flakes to sink into and adhere. Furthermore, you would require a minimum of 4 RockSolid clear kits to properly cover all those flakes since they go on half as thick as the color coats. The overall cost ends up being too expensive and underperforms since it's only a residential quality coating to begin with. Here is an example of a proper garage floor coating kit for full color flake application: bit.ly/4abJGUV

Hello Paul. We would not recommend EpoxyShield for a large airplane hanger if that is what you are considering. It is a residential quality product and among the lowest performers of all epoxy floor coatings. Cleaning with a Red 3M pad is OK, but you need to be careful about burnishing. If the white pad gets too warm it can haze the finish. That particular cleaning process works OK for commercial-quality coatings, but is not recommended for EpoxyShield or other residential coatings.

If i grind the concrete first should i use a primer? If so what kind?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 9 ай бұрын
Hi Kyle. Rust-Oleum does not recommend grinding the concrete when using RockSolid. The reason is that the more porous surface will absorb more material, reduce coverage rates, and be too thin with a poor finish. A second coat is required to produce the recommended coverage rates with a rich, glossy finish. This doubles the expense and ends up costing more than much better commercial-quality DIY polyurea coating. True primers for coatings are 2-part epoxy coating primers. These are typically used for high solids and 100% solids epoxy coatings (3-4x thicker than RockSolid). Concrete bonding primers or any other concrete primer found at your local home improvement stores are not compatible with coatings (they are for paint) and should not be used. They do not bond as well and the coating will not adhere properly.

So, we already had purchased the EpoxyShield kit for our floor (tinted so non-returnable). What would be the best way to try and improve on the issues this one has, either in prior prep or after? I already heard elsewhere to use muriatic acid to etch instead of what is in the kit. And while the epoxy clear coat won’t help much, could we use the polycuramine clear coat later on with additional prep somehow? Or whatever else you would recommend, because we WILL have cars in that garage.
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 7 сағат бұрын
Better floor prep will help to some extent. We have an article on how to properly acid etch here: allgaragefloors.com/acid-etch-garage-floor/ However, it will reduce the coverage rate by approximately 10% since more material will be absorbed by the concrete. In terms of a clear coat, we would recommend EpoxyShield Premium Clear Coat over RockSolid. Amazon has the best price: amzn.to/44XOlb5 The reason for EpoxyShield over RockSolid is that it will achieve a chemical bond to the color coat when applied during the recoat window. This bond is much better than a mechanical bond which is required when applying a non-compatible coating (RockSolid) or additional coatings outside the recoat window. When applied at 250 square feet per kit, it will achieve a dry film thickness that is 3x thicker than RockSolid as well. Because EpoxyShield Premium Clear Coat is 100% solids, it will help to resist the heat from hot tires that softens the thinner, water-based color coat.

Hi Billy. The 2.5 car kit will cover up to 500 square feet depending on porosity. This means that it might go 500 square feet if applied over another coating, 450 square feet on etched concrete and even less on concrete treated via grinding. I'm not sure what your square footage is, but you most likely will need two coats. The first will act as the primer coat and not look very good. The second will add thickness and the proper color uniformity. Use the EpoxyShield Clear Coat for your topcoat since it is compatible. You have up to four days to apply it after the last color coat. Etching solutions and acid etches have no effect on floor coatings. They need to come in contact with the minerals in concrete to work. Roughing up the surface with 120-150 grit sandpaper is required. We have an article here that discusses how to prep old epoxy floors: allgaragefloors.com/prep-older-epoxy-for-new-coat/ DO NOT try to apply EpoxyShield thick. It's a budget, water-based epoxy coating that will not cure properly and form bubbles. Only high solids and 100% solids epoxy coatings can be applied thickly or with a squeegee. Two coats of EpoxyShield applied with a 3/8" nap roller are what you need. Make sure to wait a minimum of 12 hours before applying the second coat. The clear coat material is more expensive so Rust-Oleum provides less of it to keep costs down. As a result, the dry film thickness is far too thin to get good performance. We recommend using two kits. However, once you start adding up the costs for doubling up budget kits, you are close to the cost for a commercial quality DIY epoxy coating system that is three times thicker and will last 10-15 years.

The paint is the weak link and pulls up from the concrete when this happens. It's like building a nice house on a sand foundation. Rust-Oleum purchased the company that produced RockSolid in 2014, so there is a chance it's either EpoxyShield or RockSolid that was applied. If had a very glossy finish, then it most likely was RockSolid. You can patch repair the area as you indicated. However, even if you figured out which color tan was used, it still won't match up well. Cured coatings and coating repairs do not blend well together like paint on a wall does. Overlap marks will be evident and the color tone and gloss is always different. So, you need to decide which is the less of the two evils - the burn marks or repairs that stand out. Great question. What they mean by that statement is don't use RockSolid to try and fill saw cuts, troweled contraction joints, or expansion joints. Different material fillers need to be used for that. However, it's standard practice to run a brush down the middle of a troweled contraction joint to coat the concrete, but not fill the joint. Hi Jonathan. The EpoxyShield Premium Clear Topcoat is a 100% solids epoxy. There are no solvents or water to evaporate out. How well does Rocksolid work on wood floor in a car hauler.
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors Ай бұрын
Hi Mike. It does OK, but not great. You will need to sand the wood with 60-grit sandpaper first before applying a coating. Due to how thin RockSolid is, it will require a minimum of two coats. The problem is that though a single-car kit will provide enough material for two coats in terms of the square footage, the remaining material that is mixed can't wait for the minimum 6 hours before a second coat is applied. It will require buying a 2.5-car kit since there are two mix pouches with those. You would be better off buying a gallon of single-part polyurea instead. You only use what you need for the first coat, close the can, and then use more for the second coat. Plus, it's thicker than RockSolid and will last longer. We have links for it in the description below the video.

I'm turning one bay of my garage into a woodshop. Should I go to the expense and effort to put down a coating on the floor? If so, it is a new build. Do I need to clean/degrease and/or acid etch for prep?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 6 ай бұрын
If the floor will be exposed to wood stains, solvents, and other chemicals involved with wood working, then a floor coating has it's advantages. Any spilled stains or chemicals can be wiped up without worry of it staining. General cleanup is much easier as well. We would recommend using the supplied anti-slip media since sawdust can get real slippery on a coating. Brand new or old concrete prep involves degreasing and using the supplied Eco friendly etching solution. If you don't need a color coat, then we recommend looking at a product called TS210. It's a clear protective sealer that can be applied without etching the concrete. You can learn about it here: allgaragefloors.com/ts210-concrete-sealer-review/

What do you think about doing the rocksolid floor coating kit and then adding a top coat of the epoxy shield clear coat. Sounds like it could be a winning combo?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 3 ай бұрын
Hello Eric. No, it's not the best choice. RockSolid Polycuramine and EpoxyShield epoxy are not chemically compatible. Rust-Oleum explicitly states not to use one over the other during the recoat window. To use the EpoxyShield Clear Coat, you would need to let the RockSolid coat cure, then prep the surface by roughing it up with 150-grit sandpaper so the EpoxyShield could obtain a mechanical bond. Additionally, RockSolid Clear Coat has a better abrasion rating than EpoxyShield and will wear better. The number one rule for clear coats is that they should perform just as well if not better than the color coat. The clear coat is the one that takes all the abuse and protects the color coat.

can you apply a huge amount of chips then clear coat it so that it looks like a "gator like finish"
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 11 ай бұрын
Hi Ronald. You can apply a heavier amount of color flakes as long as you can still see the base color coat and the flakes don't overlap too much. However, RockSolid does not provide a thick enough base color coat to accept all the flakes required for a full color flake broadcast/coverage. We are assuming that is what you are referring to as the "gator-like finish". In addition, it would require triple the amount of clear coat to cover all those flakes which makes RockSolid cost prohibitive compared to other (better) options.

I have a new 24x25 garage, equaling 600 sq ft. I purchased a 2 1/2 car plus 1 car kit. According to the packaging it should cover 600-750 sq ft. The 3 bags did not cover 1/2 of the garage. I needed to purchase 2 more 2 1/2 kits in order to finish the floor. If I had known that the coverage was so low, I would have primed the floor first in order to seal the concrete. Primer is a lot cheaper then this product!

@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 29 күн бұрын
Epoxy doesn't dry like paint. It chemically cures to a hardened state. When it does not harden, it's typically due to improper/insufficient mixing or from being applied when the temperatures were too cold. When this happens, the only thing you can do at this point is scrape it off the floor, clean off the remaining residue with a solvent such as denatured alcohol, and then apply a new coat.

Can you put rock solid clear over epoxy shield?

Hi John. RockSolid and EpoxySheild are not chemically compatible to bond together during the recoat window. If you want to apply RockSolid Clear Coat over EpoxyShield, you need to wait a minimum of 24 hours and then degloss the surface by roughing it up with 150-grit sandpaper. Vac/sweep the surface then wipe it down with denatured alcohol or equivalent. You can then apply the RockSolid and it will achieve a proper bond.

What about doing a primer before hand?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors Жыл бұрын
Hi John. Don't confuse concrete bonding primers with primers for coatings. Concrete bonding primers are a type of acrylic paint. They are not compatible with coatings and do not adhere as well. They are designed to be used with paint. Primers for coatings are typically 2-part epoxy formulations. They are compatible with most coatings and cost almost as much. That is why you don't see concrete "coating" primers at home improvement centers. They are typically used for high-quality commercial DIY coatings. The first coat of RockSolid would essentially be the "primer coat" if it becomes too thin and the finish is not good.

@allgaragefloors Жыл бұрын
@@johnfeather5405 That's correct. Coating primers are typically a 2-part epoxy that requires etching or grinding of the concrete surface. They cost over $100 per gallon. If you don't mind spending the additional $$$, the 2.5-car RockSolid kit will work fine. The first coat will be the primer coat and may or may not look too thin based on the 220 square feet. However, the second coat will easily cover that and provide a very glossy and rich color. We recommend purchasing RockSolid at Amazon. amzn.to/3Wl3m2w A typical 2.5-car kit is up to $80 less than home improvement centers.

My garage was previously painted by previous owner with latex paint. Can I apply Rustoleum recoat primer and then apply Rocksolid without grinding the floor?
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 10 ай бұрын
Hi Mathew. If the paint covers the entire floor and is adhered well, then you can use the Rust-Oleum Recoat Primer. However, we don't recommend it. How well your coating performs in terms of hot tire pickup and peeling is determined by what it is adhered to. In your case, the primary material adhered to the bare concrete is latex paint. It does not come close to the tenacious bond that RockSolid has to bare concrete. As a result, you may still experience peeling or hot tire pickup.

Acid etching is not the proper method of prepping a concrete floor for a coating. The only industry acceptable standard is to grind the floor to a CSP2 with a floor grinder.
@allgaragefloors
@allgaragefloors 3 ай бұрын
Hello Scott. That is definitely the case for higher solids, commercial quality coatings. However, it's not the case for RockSolid or EpoxyShield. RockSolid used to specifically state in the TDS for many years not to grind the concrete. That was because RockSolid wets out and penetrates concrete extremely well. When the surface is prepped via grinding, RockSolid coverage rates are cut in half to provide the required 3 mil DFT. Those that followed the recommended coverage rates after grinding end up with coating far too thin and have to apply another coat. This is a common complaint for RockSolid when prepping with the supplied citric acid etch. The same holds true for EpoxyShield in terms of grinding. This ends up doubling the cost of the both products since it requires two coats to get the minimal recommended DFT. RockSolid has few issues will bonding properly after using the supplied etch. Hot tires is generally not an issue with RockSolid where as EpoxyShield has many problems with that (even when grinding) which I won't delve into here.
