Isn't Rory just a fantastic force of nature? I still remember hearing this for the first time in the late 70's - absolutely blown away. His energy and enthusiasm is both relentless and infectious. Love the man. One of the great live acts from my era.

Rory Gallagher wa a lovely, soft-spoken person who was a friendly guy and always made you feel welcome. I met him for the first time as a fifteen-year old kid when sheltering for a ferocious down-poor at the 1976 Jazz Bilzen in Belgium. We had a small conversation about the diversity and taste of several Belgian local beers, while sampling them on the spot. I met him again backstage at the 1980 Reading Rock festival in England and he bloody-well remembered me. We more or less continued our conversation from four years prior and I promised him I'd send him some of our more exotic beers (mostly beers brewed by priors on a low level, like, two crates per year, maximum). There's a pub downtown Antwerp, called "The Kulminator" that has more than nine-hundred beers in stock, ninety-five per-cent of them from Belgium. I often went there to taste some of them, depending on how much money I had because some of the more rare beers are pricy. But I got some for Rory and I met-up with him again at the same Reading festival in 1981 or 1982 and he was so friendly and thankful. Quite the remarkable guy, really. When he knew you, he treated you like family. I got an invitation a few years later through Belgian blues artist Roland Van Campenhout, who was a really good friend of Gallagher, but for reasons I can't remember I passed on it and never met Rory again. I regret that now. But hey, that's life.

Song from 1971 called I Fall Apart might be the most beautiful solo he ever played. Then in 1974 he toured Ireland when bombs were exploding and everyone played only to the audiences of one side or the other ~ except Rory & his band. They played everywhere ~ Million Miles Away, Walk on Thin Ice, Cradle Rock, and a solo acoustic As the Crow Flies All fire.

I saw the great man over 20 times. Every gig was an absolute storm of high energy rock and blues. He tore the place apart wherever he played. Brilliant performer and exhilarating fluid guitarist, he was an absolute joy to behold. Hr could play a range of styles, jazz, folk and country and on his albums he would mix it up and there was a track for everyone. Amazing versatility and genuine love for his craft.

Great reaction. Rory was all about the music, he wasn't interested in the celebrity showbiz lifestyle. He never compromised his music for the sake of commercial success, refused to release singles which meant he didn't get much radio play, but as he said "Everywhere we play a crowd shows up, and they seem to know all the songs." Onstage he was a human hurricane, offstage people were often surprised to find he was a softly spoken, modest, polite, intelligent , down-to-earth gentleman. He was a one-off. You should listen to some of his interviews sometime. As for what to react to next, when Rory rocked he rocked hard, but that was only one aspect of his repertoire, he was an accomplished acoustic player and a respected bluesman too. I'll suggest 'A Million Miles Away' and 'As The Crow Flies', both from Irish Tour 74.

Virtually all of the biggest rock acts to a certain degree (some more than others) had some type of gimmick whether it was related to their image, clothes, act or whatever. With Rory it's just a guy in plain dress wearing denim, playing a battered old Stratocaster. It's so honest and rock in it's purest form. Yes, Rory is up there as one of the guitar greats, definitely in the top 10 of all time and his band IMO is the most under-rated Power Trio as this track shows they are absolutely on fire, an unstoppable force.

I used to play in a band (I was a rubbish drummer!) but our guitarist , quite a shy guy, was very good and really rated Rory , so much so , that we incorporated Shadowplay into our set.. He(the guitarist) managed to get tickets to see Rory at the Marquee Club's 25th Anniversary shows (tiny club)..I was blown away by Rory , lost my friend for a bit, only to see this shy retiring guy going mental at the front, headbanging like his life depended on it..Rory was fantastic..Happy memories...thx for this one man, great stuff!

In Germany in the 70, they created a TVshow called Rockpalast that came up from time to time with a lot of great international stars but also some unknown acts. Rory was one of the most invited. Then, in 1977, they decided to install 2 big shows per year with various big acts and for some years there were the famous Rockpalast Nights in March and October that were broadcasted all over Europe ( and there were hundreds of thousands of Rockpalast parties during that nights). Rory had the honor to open the first one of them. I cannot say which performance is my favorite of his because there are too many great ones. But one of them is "Moonchild" on the Loreley in 1982. Awesome to see how he mistreated the strings of his poor strat while soloing. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9eilL13lbq7Yn0.html In the above video you can see him use a Fender amp, on the Loreley it was a VOX AC 30 amp and in other vids you can see that he used different amps by other brands. But he always sounded like "Rory" and was immendiately recognizable. Maybe I am wrong but I think he was the one with the most unique sound among all the guitar giants. Listening to his studio work is fun but watching him life is the cherry on the cream. If I remember it correctly it was the guitarist of Pearl Jam who was inspired to learn guitar after hearing the acoustic "I'm Not Awake Yet" from the album "Deuce" because he wanted to play that, too. Perhaps my memory is wrong and it was another musician who became someone.

I was up front, the one with the brown face and I was with a white friend...I couldn't take my eyes off him..One of the guys working there was watching me...five minutes before the show ended.. he asked one question "How would you like to meet Rory Gallagher?" the rest was history.. I went back the next day to see him again.. I had no problem getting back stage.

This was how Rory opened this show - and shows why his performances are legendary. What separates Rory from the rest is that he could really do it all - his acoustic stuff is as outstanding as his electric, he could pick, he could slide. When he played the blues you felt the blues, when he rocked you rolled. He was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who played guitar, mandolin, electric sitar, harmonica, alto sax... His songwriting was brilliant and his voice was wonderfully unique. For a totally different vibe, I suggest you check out his "All Around Man" performance from the BBC show Old Grey Whistle Test. Also his Beat Club performances are sublime - among those: "Used to Be" and "In Your Town", or any of them, are worth seeing. There's also Rory with his band Taste - amazing stuff. So much more to explore, too many to mention, but experiencing Rory is a musical journey. Anyway, thanks for another great Rory reaction and keep on...

For more Rory, try Do You Read Me (Rock Goes to College) for more amazing rock guitar work or my personal favorite Sinner Boy with his band Taste at the Isle of Wight for some slide guitar. Rory was only 22 at the time and blew everyone away. Rory was also a fabulous acoustic player. Check out any of the performances on the RTE Studios 1977 special such as Pistol Slapper Blues. I think I got my money's worth... My first rock concert May 19, 1973 (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I've come to find out) East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher ZZ Top $4 It was about six months before Tres Hombres came out. Rory was pure fire right out of the gate, and I think he had as much fun as anyone. Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards(but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and BG made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Dusty, Rory, Lou, Rod. Thank You!

Fave rock guitarist is Hendrix, without a doubt. I really like Gary Moore, David Gilmour, SRV. I'm always searching for guitarists who push their art to another level. Innovayion is fun to experience. What people don't talk about Hendix is his voice, stage presence, song writing ability, his Experience bandmates, and how well his albums were recorded and produced. That entire package made Hendrix exceptional. He wasn't just a guitarist, he was a poet.

It doesn't matter *how* you discover Rory. He was breathtakingly good. His studio albums are interesting, but live is where the fire is. It is rumoured that even Steven Hawking jigged about to Rory ( not really... ) he was that infectious. There is no 'best' in music. There are those who are/were above, those whose star shone a little more brightly. Rory was one who dazzled. He connected with music and he connected with people. Once you discover Rory, and spend some time listening and watching, you can't help but fall under his spell.

Let me just say, if you were to change your channel here to the "Pope Reacts To Rory Gallagher" channel, well, I'd be here all the time. You could start with A Million Miles Away.

Just found your channel and since then I’ve watched like 20+ vids. Your energy in the reactions makes it enjoyable af to watch. Saw you liked a lot of the spacier sounds of Pink Floyd and Rush so I’d say I highly recommend the band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I’d start with their song Crumbling Castle (maybe even the live at KEXP version) but they’ve got a ton of great stuff. Keep it up dude

I saw Rory many times - always a sell out everyone to see him. Not ideal for here- but loved his studio albums- so much great music. particularly the later albums I think, Top Priority, Defender, and Fresh Evidence.
