He’s been referred to as the man keeping rock alive or the man who saved rock n’ roll - and that is a direct quote from Eddie Trunk about himself. I’m only joking. I do like listening to Eddie Trunk whenever I come across his show or hear clips on youtube, but not everyone counts themselves a fan of the radio host. In today’s video let’s take a look at Eddie I Know Everybody in that band trunk’s rockstars he’d feuded with.
Just for some background on Trunk it was in the mid 80’s he started working for Megaforce records who had both metallica and anthrax on their roster. It was at the age of 25 he was the vice president of the company and he even got executive producer credits on a fe wband’s records including Anthrax, Raven, Overkill and Ace Frehley. It was throughout the 80’s and the 90’s he got into radio broadcasting and you might remember him from VH1 with that metal show as well. He’s still broadcasting today being heard on Sirius XM. Let’s get to the feuds.
LIzzy Borden
Lizzy borden would speak with Mark Morton at Heavy metal examiner and he would take a shot at Eddie Trunk. When asked why he never appeared on that metal show he would reveal “he’s actually one of those folks who doesn’t like us (referring to Trunk). He doesn’t get it, doesn’t understand it and just doesn’t want to know.” He’d go on to reveal playing rocklohoma and and how they were supposed to do an interview with Trunk, but he never showed up. Trunk was also supposed to see the band’s show with him adding “he only saw the last 20 seconds of it and then he went on his radio show and slammed us. And he slammed us on his tv show too.”” Borden would add that Trunk only covers stuff he’s interested in adding ‘he’s probably getting caught up in his own fame too.”
Trunk would end up responding to the interview claiming he’s never met Lizzy borden and how he’s supported bands he was not personally into of and how he’s into countless bands he doesn’t play, because his audience doesn’t care. As for rocklahoma, Trunk would claim he doesn’t interview bands so low on the bill and his contract only calls for him to interview the closing three bands each day. He’d also add he’s in fact played lizzy borden on his radio show adding a parting shot “Considering the lack of interest in the guys career after decades, i’ m not surprised he’s bitter.” ouch.
Static X -
Tony Campos and Edsel Dope would speak to the Battleline podcast and the topic of bands using pre-recorded tapes. Campos would tell the podcast “I don’t understand why anyone listens to that guy. He’s not a musician. He has no experience performing live, why listen to his opinion. Dope meanwhile would cite efficiency claiming bands from the 70’s who used to bring on lots of backup singers and musicians to round out their live shows - don’t need to do that anymore because of technological improvements. Also, it comes down to economics too - they can’t house and feed 26 people on tour.
Steel Panther - Eddie Trunk - Radio host Eddie “I know everybody and hung out with them’ trunk has long expressed his distaste for the band Steel Panther. It was during his show he was asked to name one band he never thought would make it and he singled out steel panther saying “It amazes me - the amount of shows and attention… They’ve gotten huge in England, but in America, they’re still basically a House of Blues-level band, but it always amazed me how popular Steel Panther got from what they started out as, which was a band called Metal School.
“They’re still a parody, a spoof, on ’80s rock. I think there’s a segment of their fanbase that isn’t even in on the joke, that is younger.
It was a year earlier he was a little more critical saying “I have nothing personal against anybody in the band. They are good people, they are good players and all that. But it’s a spoof. It’s an act. It’s mocking 80’s hard rock….“My time and energy are going to be invested into the bands from that era, that are still trying to make new, c

He needs to draw a line here. It's not absolute. If someone is full on faking it and guys aren't playing their instruments, that's one thing. Lots of bands use tracks or samples so that they can more accurately reproduce what they recorded and the intended product of the song. If a band does a song with a 30 piece orchestra in the studio, or with a lot of vocal harmonies, they're damn well going to use tracks to reproduce that and they should.

@@wurm90125 Exactly. With the economics of touring these days, most bands can't afford to bring backup singers, keyboard players, or whatever else they'd need to fill out the sound to make it more like the record. And conversely, bands shouldn't intentionally limit themselves in the studio because they wouldn't be able to pull it off live.

Some bands don't have the members to play everything recorded in studio live. Take my favorite band. Three sisters. They have piano in some of their songs which none of them can play during a concert. There are a few songs that they do play the piano. or whatever it's called, before the guitars and bass begin, so at those moments the piano is live. But during the rest of the instruments, the piano is a backing track. I used to think that was strange, but if you don't want anyone else to be on stage with you, you have to compromise.

Aerosmith doesn't use tracks, they have backup musicians and when Steven gets on top of the piano, Buck Johnson takes over. You can clearly see it when you go to a live show. They should, but unfortunately they won't. It's become so commonplace and it's only gonna get worse. I hear people complain about Foo Fighters not needing 3 guitar players and a keyboard player, or Green Day not playing as a trio live, but that's because they're not playing with backing tracks. For some weird reason I hear people complain more about the number of people in a band more than the use of backing tracks.

@@rev949Exactly. I love the "I know everybody in that band" that you added to his name, I hope that sticks. Anyway, I started to talk to him and as I do, a cute girl comes up and starts to talk to him too so he immediately turns from me, focus' on her for a minute or two and once she was done talking to him, he walks off. What a complete douche bag. He was also handing out photos of himself and bumper stickers that said "Eddie Trunk Rocks". Talk about an ego! I could never do sh*t like that. His ego is bigger than this universe and he loves to hear himself talk. It amazes me how he is put in such high regard by so many people and made a main host at almost anything that the features hard rock and metal bands or musicians...

That's the thing: he'll have the lead singer of Trixter on his show, and chat him up about their latest tour, acting like it's Taylor Swift selling out arenas. Trixter's a band that had about two hits right at the end of the glam metal era. Literally, late summer, maybe early fall of 1991, right as Nirvana broke! I think there are just a few people that actually care. Great for the band that they're actually still selling tickets, but I'm just not interested, and it's kind of sad.

I placed the phone call to (old inactive band guitarist) and said, Why don't you talk to (band vocalist) anymore? Then, he reached out to (band vocalist) that day and the ball started rolling! One thing I admire about Eddie is he speaks out for fans regarding high ticket prices and the use of backing tracks during concerts. In that respect, he is the voice of the fan. But, yeah, the guy didn't even play drums in a cover band in high school. He's said he's a "frustrated drummer", and that's about it. Maybe he never had the time to get competent on the traps. He was doing radio and writing music articles when most musicians were starting their careers.

You missed a few things: Trunk has been highly critical of the Sweetish band "Ghost" calling them "a gimmick act.' This is rich given how Trunk will bather on and on about the greatness of Alice Cooper, King Diamond and Kiss. Trunk even went on to say you can't look like Ghost does and release songs like "Dance Macabre." Trunk's interview with Tobias Forge was at least to say "interesting." He also says he roots for younger rock bands, but totally ignores the existence of the band "Shinedown." A rock band that went to #1 with their last album "Planet Zero." Unless you a throwback 70s act playing clubs or a close personal friend like Lizzy Hale, Truck won't acknowledge your existence.

I never really got Springsteen's appeal, either. The guy's got a gutteral voice and his songs all kind of sound the same to me, about the same subjects. Someone likes him (I know my older brother does), he's been a big name for about fifty years. But, have you ever been into a band that isn't too popular? I could say that about my love for the thrash metal band Anthrax. I've been into them since 1990, through their many ups and downs and lineup changes. It's the same with Eddie and UFO, so I kind of understand it.

Having listened to UFO--personally, I'm partial to their early 70s "space rock" stuff, pre-Michael Schenker.
