Custom is hand-made and is when a maker gives you options of finishes in his list such as steel and material...for one or more of his own models. Full custom is similar to full custom but the material, steel and finishes are up to a customer's specification. One-off is similar to true custom but the combination of finishes will never be repeated for another knife. True custom is when you and the maker basically do a collab when the latter consults you on the entire processing of making a knife..

True i call rockstead knives midtech knives and i do like their quality control. I just got mine from knife center. All my knives are as sharp as it is but i make knives for sushi restaurant as a hobby so i have a lot of practice and some nice tools. One day i will make all my knives with a mirror finish like these do but right now i dont have the time and patience. And yxr7 is used in metal cutting bits in japanese factories it is made by hitachi. So i dont think it counts as true proprietary steel. Even though i have never seen it in a knife made by any other companies.

Perhaps, but if that's the case it rules out a lot of custom knife makers from that category.
@aaronshapiroedc11 жыл бұрын
It's semantics at that point. In the business, handmade knives are widely considered customs, even when makers use CNC to accomplish the process. This doesn't apply to the question in the video, since Rockstead markets their knives as productions, although they are of, at least, custom-knife quality.

Rockstead workers spend hours on the blade to get that finish right? Or is my research been for naught :< Beautiful knife btw I should be getting a Kou on Saturday hehe

I agree with this IF the maker is doing something they haven't done before for another customer.

Not sure!

If it no longer involved the maker or a guy to handcraft it I think it's no longer custom. You'll always have very high end production products in any industry.

Lets see some cut tests. Whats the point of having a great cutter if you dont see what it can do!

If that's the case, most of the "Custom" knifemakers that use CNC or produce specific models wouldn't be custom makers any longer.... Despite each knife being made by hand etc etc...
@jellzey11 жыл бұрын
Just my view, if a maker makes a 1 off knife just for you that is a custom. Mid tech is where things get mushy.
@vnphan111 жыл бұрын
..from designing to selecting materials and such to the final product, except for the making itself of course :D Anyways that's my opinion.
@91a2jettavr611 жыл бұрын
I would say Hoback, to use your example, is "semi-custom". Unless, of course, he will make a 100% unique knife right down to the blade shape/handle shape/etc. Any of the knives he makes multiples of aren't, in my opinion, customs unless he applies features to them that he won't do for anyone else. Ehhhh...actually, that's still semi-custom to me if the "bones" remain unaltered. Anyway, I've said my piece and now I must move on! Opinions are like...well, you know ;) .

Don'tI like the aesthetics of the Rockwel knives in general. But if I could choose any knife on the planet ... this would be the one.
@aaronshapiroedc11 жыл бұрын
Ehh I wouldn't lump Kirby Lambert and Gerry McGinnis in with production companies. Take Hoback for example, he makes fairly similar knives, with limited finishes, but he's far from a production company.
@91a2jettavr611 жыл бұрын
It sure does...and it should. I am of the OPINION ;) that many makers who call themselves custom makers really shouldn't. If you're churning out multiple, identical or nearly identical knives with a limited choice of finishes, for example, then I don't feel you are making customs. You are making production knives with slight variations. Again, just my opinion!
@vnphan111 жыл бұрын
Well I mean you will not get involved in the physical making process of the knife :D
I find really funny how people, that know about and own really sharp knives, get impressed by Rockstead sharpness!!
@91a2jettavr611 жыл бұрын
Very true. It wouldn't be cost-effective for any of the CNC-using makers to do truly custom work. So...they design their own blades, put a variety of finish options, etc, on them and call them custom. This is the part I don't agree with. To me, a custom is a one of a kind.
