I love how Rocky's gang boss isn't just some sleaze ball trying to take advantage of Rocky. But just a guy who wants to see some guy from his neighborhood make it out of here. He sees the chance Rocky has and legitimately wants to help him.

The two little turtles are named "Cuff" and "Link", and Sylvester Stallone still has them! They are now about 50 years old.

Rocky (1976) was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing.

I’m a 40 year old man and I cry like a baby at least once through each of the first 3 films in the series. The greatest part of this entire movie is that Sly was the writer, producer, and director. It even won the Oscar for best film.

They found out Stallone was pretty fast when filming these movies. Saw an estimate of a clip where he leaves a bunch of kids running with him in the dust (2nd movie I believe). The estimate from the clip was like a 52 sec 400m pace, so under a 4 min mile. Carl Weathers is just a natural born athlete though. He played professionally in the NFL, and the way he throws some of his punches is just beautiful.

Apollo Creed was announced the Winner at the very end on a "Split Decision" (3 judges hand in a scorecard after the full 15 rounds if it 'goes the distance', and 2 of the 3 said Creed won), but Rocky did give him the fight of his life.

The problem with Paulie is that he's really insecure - and by selfishly trying to keep his sister down, it makes him feel better about being stuck where he is in life. He's the walking definition of "misery loves company." He gets REALLY agitated when Adrian starts to make a better life for herself - and lashes out at Rocky because of it. He's so miserable and it's pretty much all he has left... and with Adrian lifting herself up, he is truly alone and he's afraid.

Rocky and Adrian are one of the best movie couples of all time, she has Rocky's back all the time and he makes her see herself the way he sees her.

They cut his eye because it was swollen from a giant contusion (blood blister). By cutting it the pressure is released and he gets some vision back

You absolutely must see Rocky 2 and 3 before you watch number 4. There were a few other female reactors who felt just like you about watching a boxing movie because of the violence. After they watched the Rocky series, they too cannot wait to see the next one. You will love them all! I'm looking forward to your reaction to the next chapter. They both have part of themselves that holds them back... self-doubt, low self-esteem etc. During the course of the film, they both have to face the things inside of themselves which are holding them back, they both need a little help to push them and they both have to find the courage inside of themselves to push outside of their comfort zone and thus succeed. This scene was intentional, important to the character development and theme of the film and only seems "uncomfortable" due to the current (irrational) hypersensitive viewpoint.

Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire both have said in interviews that "Rocky" is a love story and not a sports movie. You're going to love these movies. The Rocky films are so inspiring. You'll love these movies. By the time you get to part 4 it's gonna be super hyped, awesome! A "bum" CAN mean "homeless", but it's also used as an insult to call someone who is dirty, lazy, no ambition, which are all traits of some of the homeless.

Fun Fact. Stallone kept the turtles ( Cuff and Link ) and they are still alive. I think they are around 45 years old.

The "women weaken legs line" comes from trainers telling their fighters to avoid sex. They would often tell them doing so would make them stronger. In reality, the trainers are worried that sex will interrupt their sleep. Training for a fight can be very intense and proper sleep is imperative for recovery and fighting to their best potential.

Your reactions are so touching. In the "cutting" scene they made a cut in one of Rocky's eyelids because both eyes were swelling shut from the many blows to the face that he took. He was getting to the point where he couldn't see, which meant he couldn't fight. Mickey wanted to throw in the towel (concede), but Rock insisted on getting cut instead. He was that determined. You might as well watch #s 2 and 3 before watching #4. They help establish a background to events in that movie.

The Hunt for Red October is a great movie that features a lot of Russian characters and story. By the same director as Die Hard and Predator. Well worth watching.

This is a love story about a guy trying to make it through life. The other movies are less story build up and more about exploring relationships that form in real life communities. The boxing community, Industrial big cities and the emotional rollercoaster that adds pressure to the Relationship between Adrian and Rocky. This never stops being a realistic life with dreams of a fairy tale ending ...

Definitely watch Rocky II and III before watching IV. I am so glad you enjoyed this movie despite you not liking violent sports like boxing. It is more drama and a love story that has boxing as the background as opposed to the boxing being more important. Just a great movie overall and won the Oscar for Best Picture that year.

Nowadays, the word applies to someone who acts unprofessionally. In the beginning, Rocky didn't have the proper training, discipline or skills, so it was as if he just came off of the street and into the ring. In Great Britain, the word "bum" would mean their butt, but that has no relation here. You definitely should watch Rocky 2 and 3 before watching 4.

Everyone in this movie did such a great job in their roles. I'm surprised everytime I watch this movie by how good it is. And I've seen it at least fifty times. LOL You'll love Rocky 2.

A few things to answer some of your questions: "capeci" (pronounced "ka peesh" in the dialect in the movie), is actually Italian, but you were correct, it means "you understand?" Also, Horn and Hardarts was a very well known, but now long out of business, Philadelphia sandwich shop company that was famous for being the first "automat," and wasn't related to cigarettes. The automat was a refrigerated vending machine filled with pre-made sandwiches displayed behind small, individual glass doors. You would put your money in the machine and select the sandwich you wanted. The glass door to that sandwich would unlock, you would open it, take your sandwich, and close the door, after which a fresh sandwich would be automatically forwarded to the front directly behind the glass door to be available for the next customer, until all of those sandwiches were sold for the day. Take care!

I'll paraphrase what someone else said: everyone starts out thinking this is a boxing movie. Then they realize it's not, boxing is just a metaphor. It's a movie about friendship, family relations, love, about finding one's place in the world, and the struggle to make something of yourself.

The movie Moscow on the Hudson is also very good. Robin Williams plays a Russian who defects to America in 1982. It is part drama, part comedy, part romance. The movie Red Heat is an action crime thriller. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Soviet police officer who comes to America to catch a criminal. This movie made a lot of news when it came out because they actually filmed in the Soviet Union and most of the beginning takes place there. In 1987 this was very rare and seen as a good effect of glasnost. The movie Comrades of Summer is another good movie. It's a sports movie based on a true story about an American baseball coach hired to come to Russia to train a Russian baseball team. It takes place very soon after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is a very good movie of good sportsmanship between America and Russia. I wonder if you have seen the movie Dr. Zhivago? It is a movie based on a very good book and won many awards including best picture. It is a personal story that takes place during the 1917 Russian Revolution. Best Regards!

So glad you started with the first ROCKY film, instead of the fourth one. Please don't watch Rocky IV, until you've seen Rocky II, and Rocky III. They all build upon the previous movie's storylines.

You have to watch the whole series, Rocky 2 is just as good, Rocky 3 is good as well as Rocky 4, watch them in order.

What was most remarkable is that Sylvester Stallone had no financial backing for this movie. He was a relatively unknown actor and paid for everything on a credit card. That is why the production quality is so different than the usual "block-buster" we usually see from Hollywood. BTW-this movie won the Oscar for best movie of the year. Quite an accomplishment considering it beat out Amadeus.

Rocky (1976) is inspired by a true story; the Ali vs. Wepner fight. A second rate fighter (Wepner) was offered a shot at the world title. Wepner was the first person to ever knock down Ali in a fight, but Wepner was knocked out in the last round.

Rocky 2, 3 and 4 are the best of the whole series. You will really like them :)

So glad you decided to watch the first one first. Smart idea, as these movies are chronological, and they literally play out back to back. Each movie begins at the exact point the previous one ended. You definitely want to watch them all leading up to 4 in order to get the background, or you won't appreciate the relationships and conflicts you'll see in 4.

Back then a championship fight had 15 rounds in 1987 they reduced it to 12 rounds which it still is today

Boxing matches last for three rounds in Olympic and Amateur boxing. When Rocky was filmed a match could go as long as fifteen rounds. It was later shortened I think to twelve rounds because there were too many fighters being killed in the later rounds.

Just remember that Rocky IV was made during the cold war between Russia and America so it's slanted.

This movie is so loved , that to this day, people travel to Philadelphia to run up those museum steps in commemoration of Rocky’s big scene at the end of his training montage!

Me and my mom used to live about 6 blocks from the Art Museum (the place where he ran up the stairs) when this movie came out. I was very familiar with those steps because the Philadelphia Flyers (hockey) had just won the Stanley Cup (trophy for wining over all competitors for the year) and I had sat down to watch the ensuing city-wide party on those very steps just before the movie came out. So, when we went to see the movie, I was ecstatic about seeing him run up those steps and dancing right where I had sat. I sat at the city wide party (17 MILLION people came to celebrate) on those steps and saw the same view that Rocky did in the poster (you showed here) and in the movie. Oh, and to answer some of your questions, a "bum" was a term used to mean "homeless", yes, but more specifically, a "vagrant" (a person without a settled home or regular work who wanders from place to place and lives by begging). Later, it also took on the meaning a "dirty, rotten, no good person". However, in the point in the movie where you asked, they are saying he's a dirty, rotten no good person who doesn't deserve what he's getting, who's also just hurt a man needlessly. The phrase, "truck run over your face" is just a "loose" expression (can use a LOT of words instead of "truck") that refers to his being banged up/bruised. A "contender" is a fighter who can "contend" (compete) with another fighter for an award or title. In this context though, they means to say that his coach thinks that Rocky will NEVER win a "big" fight like that, and the guy who now has his locker CAN. They cut his eye (eyelid) because it was so swollen that he couldn't see. When you cut the eyelid, it let the blood out so the swelling goes down.

I can only assume when they "cut open" his eye that they were cutting through dried blood.

Hey Dasha! You probably didn't catch this, but Apollo says "... on this country's biggest Birthday!" The movie start in 1975 but on January 1st it's 1976. 200 years since the Constitution was signed. I remember at tons of marketing and specials on USA's 200 birthday!

Rocky's defense is basically just taking shots and making his opponent tired of hitting him.

The line about "What truck ran over your face?" is a smart ass way of asking why you look so beat up. The person saying that obviously knew that Rocky is a boxer and got punched in the face a lot, but he was highlighting how much damage Rocky had taken and comparing it to being struck by a truck instead of a fist. It is not an uncommon question (usually in a lighthearted way) when someone has obvious bruises. I have heard a football player that got tackled/hit really really hard wake up and ask "Did anyone get the license plate of the truck that ran over me?"

They offered Sly 360,000 dollars for the script if he walked, even though he had 100 dollars in the bank. They paid him a million in the end to star in the film.

The loan shark Rocky worked for is Joe Spinell, who was the godfather of Sly's son Sage, who passed away some years ago. Spinell was in a lot of stuff in the 70s and 80s: the first "Godfather" twins, "Cops & Robbers", "Taxi Driver", "Nighthawks" and "Maniac". He sadly died by accidentally cutting himself against the glass door of his bathtub. Instead of calling for help, he slept on his couch and his hemophilia did the rest.

In America we have a word "Hobo.' Particularly in the depression years, it describes a homeless man, out of work, that traveled around the country looking for work. Quite often associated with men jumping on trains to cover large distances across the country. At that time, most of them were honest men looking for work and were mostly welcome wherever they went, because they provided labor that was needed. Its just that, at that time, there was never enough work at any one location to provide permanent work, so they had to move on. Eventually a criminal element would develop among the Hobos, making it difficult on all of them. A bum, is just a useless person that goes through life living on handouts and has no intentions of ever becoming self sufficient. Like a parasite they live off what they can con off of others.

Great reaction Dasha... There are a total of 6 Rocky films (and 2 spin-off films Creed & Creed 2...Creed 2 is actually a direct continuation of Rocky 4 by the way). Also Sylvester Stallone recently released his Director's Cut version of Rocky 4 (which is a total re-edit & entirely different version of Rocky 4 than the original theatrical release)...My recommendation is watch the original theatrical release of Rocky 4 first, then if you're still curious watch the Director's Cut of it (some fans still like the original version, while other like the newer director's cut. You can make up your own mind as to which version you think is superior...In my own opinion I actually like both versions & think each one has their own pluses and minuses about each). Enjoy all the Rocky (and Creed) movies 😁🥊

He's upset because he wants a favor from Rocky (he wants his old collecting job which Rocky quit) now that he thinks Rocky has hit the big-time. He's also envious of Rocky. The scene in the gym where he approches Rocky (with his tail between his legs after that incident with Adrian) to ask if he can make some money on his name is about as close to tendering an apology as Paulie can get. He definitely redefines the word toxic. To say Its challenging being Paulie's friend, would be an understatement.

The irony about this particular review is while the fight ends in a split decision there's definitely a knockout present. 😉 Jokes (all true) aside, this is still one of the best movies ever made only surpassed in my opinion by Rocky 2.
