The whole scene with Rocky running up to Mick in the street is pure genius. The director doesn't let you hear the conversation, he makes the audience participate.

Star Wars and Rocky were released 6 months apart. The steady cam was invented for Rocky. This is why we have the iconic stair run and the end fight. Before Rocky cameras weren't too mobile and had to be mounted on a vehicle, dolly or rail system.

That was an interesting coincidence that you guys made a reference to Lennie from “ Of Mice And Men”. Rocky’s manager Burgess Meredith was actually in that film in 1937, playing George Milton - Lennie’s overseer and best friend, back when getting started in acting.

I believe Cuff and LInk are still alive and living with Slyvester Stallone in a nice spacious crib. They even made a cameo appearance in one of the recent Creed movies...while the glass bowl seems pretty small by todays standards, you guys should have seen the official turtle bowls back then, very small and they consisted of a small circular ramp in a small plastic bowl.

Okay fellas I love to share this story with newcomers to the Rocky world!! There was a fight in 1975 between Muhammad Ali, who was the heavyweight champ at the time, and a relatively unknown local regional fighter by the name of Chuck WEPNER!! Chuck had a nickname, the Bayonne Bleeder because of his tendency to get cut very easily and bleed profusely during a fight,!! (Kind of like Rocky in this fight) Bayonne New Jersey being his hometown and also where I grew up!! As you guys may know, Muhammad Ali had a very outgoing voicerous personality, something like Apollo Creed in this movie!! He was boasting that he would knock Wepner out in 3 rounds!! In fact Chuck knocked Ali to the canvas one-time early in the fight and lasted into round15 before he was knocked out!!! Sylvester Stallone saw that fight and it inspired him to finish his script for Rocky!! Chuck Wepner is still alive today in his 80s!!! And still lives in Bayonne, with where they actually erected a statue of him similar to Rocky's statue!!

I love how the winner of the match is being announced, but it's in the background, it's irrelevant, because Rocky is still on his feet and there's the woman he loves, and that's all the matters. I love a story where someone wins despite not winning.

Stallone would not sell the script unless he got to play the lead and it was a very smart decision. If you look at the all the films that were nominated the year Rocky won the Oscar, you'll see what a great year it was for cinema. "You're gonna eat lightnin' and you're gonna crap thunder!" Fun Fact: Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write the screenplay after seeing the Chuck Wepner-Muhammad Ali fight on March 24, 1975, at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio, near Cleveland. The details of that fight is beyond the scope of this comment, but the Creed-Balboa fight parallels that fight in many ways. Making Lemonade Fact: In the film, the poster above the ring before Rocky fights Apollo (Carl Weathers) shows Rocky wearing red shorts with a white stripe when he actually wears white shorts with a red stripe. This was an actual mistake made by the props department that they could not afford to rectify, so Sylvester Stallone came up with the idea for the scene where Rocky points out the mistake himself. The comment about Rocky's robe being too baggy came about the same way - the robe delivered to the set was far too baggy for Stallone, so rather than hope people wouldn't notice, the character himself simply points it out. Guerrilla Filmmaking Fact: Most of the scenes of Rocky jogging through Philadelphia were shot with no permits, no equipment, and no extras. The shot where he runs past the moored boat for example, the crew were simply driving by the docks, and John G. Avildsen saw the boat, and thought it would make a good visual, so he had Sylvester Stallone simply get out of the van and run along the quays, while Avildsen himself filmed from the side door. A similar story concerns the famous shot of Rocky jogging through the food market. As he runs, the stall keepers and the people on the sidewalks can clearly be seen looking at him in bemusement. While this works in the context of the film to suggest they're looking at Rocky, in reality, they had no idea why this man was running up and down the road being filmed from a van. During this scene, the famous shot where the stall owner throws Rocky an orange was completely improvised by the stall owner, who had no idea that a movie was being filmed and that he would be in it.

The thing I love about this is all the characters seem prototypical on the surface but there are complex relationships between them all. Paulie has virtually no redeeming qualities but rocky stands by in their friendship cuz he’s just that loyal. When rocky looks past the hurt he’s felt from mick ignoring him cuz he didn’t commit to the right path.

Rocky had very solid reasons for initially rejecting the offer to fight Creed. He needed time to process it, keeping in mind the huge difference between fighting in clubs and fighting for the heavyweight championship! Damn all that "positive thinking" bs.. he was being real. Up until that moment he had no plans or expectations to progress as a professional boxer. Very little focus or discipline. He and Mickey needed each other.

As you may know Sylvester Stallone wrote this movie . The budget was extremely low for filming. So the date at the ice rink was supposed to be full of extras. In order to cuts costs Sly rewrote the scene to just three actors. The baggy robe and the wrong color boxing shorts on the mural were both mistakes made by their departments. So instead of spending money of fixing these mistakes. Sly addresses them in character. Going the distance in that time was 15 three minute rounds

The boxing choreographer quit. He had creative differences with Stallone. Stallone wanted Apollo Creed to open the fight with four jabs and the choreographer said that no fighter would ever do that, Stallone’s reply was “Apollo Creed would “ and the choreographer quit because he thought Stallone was dumb for wanting it that way. And that’s how Stallone ended up with the job as the boxing choreographer.

And if you go back and re-listen to just the fight commentary he actually set two records during that fight. The first one was he was the first fighter ever to knock Apollo down. Early on in the fight when they first gets that good hidden and knocks all over the ground the commentator said oh my god that's the first time Apollo's ever been knocked to the ground. And then of course going the distance was the second. No fighter had ever gone all the rounds with Apollo. Which is part of the reason Apollo was struggling so much at the end He's used to finishing the fights within the first couple of rounds he himself has never had to go a full 15 rounds. Rocky literally pushed him to the brink.

You guys should watch the true DVD with all the comentaries. One Commentary was the best commentary which had the director, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, all separated but very very informative. How Talia Shire went to thrift stores to pick her own character's clothes to Carl Weathers bunking with Burgess Meredith (Mick), Burt Young's praising the script to even some of the locations they had to shoot. The scene where Rocky was yelling at Mickey in his crib saying that it "STINKS IN HERE" was actually a decrepit building and it really stank. Bunch of good stuff, probably one of the best commentaries to be heard. Reason: Was one of the oldest dvds as now a days commentaries really stink.

The doctor that delivered Stallone usee forceps incorrectly and damaged nerves in his face, mostly on the left side causing partial paralysis of his lip, chin and tongue. Growing up this caused him to have much difficulty talking and that along with how he looked made people like his teachers label Stallone as having a "dormant" brain. He was also teased for the way he looked and talked, people called him "Sylvia". In junjor high and high school he decided to take up sports like football and, yes, boxing, thinking that the training would build his body up to an intimidating size that might make people think twice about teasing him. It worked. But also, showing in more ways than one that his brain was not dormant, he also took acting. He was good at acting but also the many different kinds of dialogs that Stallone had to learn helped him train himself to talk better. In 1975, world heavy-weight boxing champion Muhammad Ali fought Chuck Wepner in a title fight. The fight was supposed to be an easy $1.2 million dollar payday for Ali. Wepner was a 40 - 1 underdog. Wepner shocked the world by almost going the distance with Ali, going down with just 19 seconds left in the 15th round. After seeing the fight Stallone was inspired and in a writing frenzy wrote the script for _ROCKY_ in just 3 and a half days!

13:08, an example of the actor's commentary, Burt Young said this turkey was just one turkey and it was filmed so many times by the end this turkey was falling apart and had to be tied so many times after it got thrown out the door so many times and poor Burt Young had to act eat spit it out then act eat again to get the scene done so many times. They had a low budget so they could not buy many turkeys just the one.

Hey, guys. This "Rocky" reaction is my introduction to your channel. Really enjoyed it but was surprised to see that you haven't continued with this popular, well-loved franchise. Any chance you'll do "Rocky II" soon? Looking forward to it if you do.💙💫💫

Nice one, guys! To prep yourselves for the new Creed series (about Apollo Creed's son) you should watch at least the first 4 Rocky movies so that you have the full back story. They are all good movies. My personal fav Rocky movie though is the last one, Balboa. Really good stuff! 🙂

Drinking raw eggs is something people really used to do. There was a misconception about eggs, that if you cooked em they'd have less protein, so athletes and bodybuilders would drink raw eggs instead of cooking them. They don't have more protein of course, but that was the belief at the time. IIRC you actually get MORE protein if you cook em, while also preventing salmonella poisoning.

The tall ship in the background when he's running along the waterfront is The Moshulu, the ship young Vito Corleone came to America on in The God Father Part 2. It is now permanently docked in Philadelphia as a restaurant and night club.

Stallone had trained in boxing for a few months with the legendary former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier before filming began. However, Stallone was not a professional boxer and had no experience before making the movie.

33:31 a scene that was almost, ALMOST did not get filmed. Supposedly the powers that be wanted this scene not be filmed as the movie already had the point proven and Stallone and director begged for this scene. Well, the powers gave them just one shot only and if they could do it in that one shot they would allow it. Well, one shot later, which you saw, and the only take they had....well there you go, one of the best scenes in the movie.

Awesome reaction, look forward to seeing you do up to Rocky IV, they were kind of trash past that. Considering how low budget the first movie was you know damn well that turkey was caught by someone when Paulie threw it out the window and shared by the crew 🤣🤔💯🔥

I always thought Rocky and Adrien were so cute together. They're both really similar when you think about it, with the social awkwardness and everything. They just have different special interests but they support each other in them.

Ironically, Sylvester Stallone never boxed in real life, but Burt Young who plays the sloppy drunk, lazy brother of his girlfriend was a successful boxer at both amateur and professional levels. I think he was unbeaten in his professional career.
