I saw Rocky at the Bijue, that we called "The Sleeze You", in Medallion Shopping Center, in Dallas in 1979. He sounded great, but I got there late and just saw a few songs. And I saw the drummer do a back flip. I did not understand how great he was until I watch this clip and see his pick attack, and control of the guitar and amp, and his muting. His notes are so clear, and there is no noise, and no sloppiness at all. He was a lot more fun when he was younger. I also saw him later in 1980 at Sneaky Pete's, a small club in that same shopping center, Medallion Shopping Center, where the Bijue was. He was doing some funny stuff, like hit a harmonic, and then grab the microphone, and move it up and then down, while he bent the string up, and then let it down. He had such a great Les Paul through Marshall amp sound in 1979. But in 1980, he was playing through a Lab Series so he could get those harmonics at a lower volume, and surely because it was smaller, but it was the Marshall that sounded so great, like in this video. Then much later, like in the late 1990's, I saw him at Poor David's Pub in Dallas, on Lower Greenville Ave, and then in 2005 at the Granada Theater, also on Lower Greenville Ave. He had the Marshall again, and he had his sound back, and he sounded great, but he did not have this singer. Rocky was doing the singing. Thanks for posting this. Long Live Rocky Athas!!!

Yea buddy he's still The Malice from Dallas & if Steve Vaughn were still with us he would have to agree as they were friends from their early school days . The best of Texas & that's a tough nut to crack . We miss Larry & that soulful voice .

Drive On! Rocky Athas is the best kept secrete in Texas guitar! Stevie Ray Vaughn was inducted into the Buddy Texas hall of Texas Rock two years after Rocky. He and Steve were friends. Rocky could have played any sport thag he wanted to play in hihh scbool, instead he was always gesd deep in a guitar project. His pound on finger style has been used by guitar players in legendary Rock band such as Quenn and Van Halen, but nobody does it like Rocky. The first time I saw him play at The Bijou in Dallas and Mother Blues, I knew that I was in the company of a legend. Rock on Rocky Athas! #TKR

If any of you so called critics of Rocky wanna babble about one of the most talented, and creative guitarists that never got the big break...go play with yourself somewhere else. I've followed and have known Rocky for 35 years! If you had the opportunity to purchase and/or hear his first solo creation cd and his work with Tommy Bolin, Buddy Guy,to name but a few it would fucking blow you away. It is right in line with Vai, Satriani, Gary Hoey, and anybody else that is in the Guitar God Status. His work is incredible and his licks are as unique and innovative as they come so I don't know what is blinding your eyes, clogging your ears, and affecting your brain. I would be glad to send some tunes to anyone interested.

Rocky this will forever embed in my mind forever. I found out you were playing at the Hard Rock Dallas and I had not seen you in years because you did not tour. I brought my wife and a bunch of other couples from her work. I couldn't wait to see you play again. You opened with this song and it was so powerful and the entire place was awe struck! We go way back and I have loved hearing your play and buying all your music! Keep me posted AND take care! Miss you Larry S. !

Funny , in interviews Rocky said he never called him Stevie just Steve. Pretty cool to hear rocky talk about them as kids in school trying to form a band of only the the best kids in the neighborhood. Sad SRV got all the accolades while Rocky is still a name known mostly in Texas . Years ago i sent Rocky a song i had written back in my high school days & i was shocked he actually listed to the track & gave me one of the best compliments i've ever gotten. Here's my link should you wish to hear the track & read his comment. The man is one amazing guy & a top notch musical giant. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iK6aY5eXq7rWin0.html he gave me one other very cool comment on this as well , kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orCVn9amuZe5qH0.html I wish i had a chance to see him play but i live in MD. not Texas. No out there quite like The Malice From Dallas.

Are you serious!!!????, Its apparent you have not the slightest idea of how songs are constructed. The solo perfectly suits the song, its feel, and its timbre. Go back to your metal shredders, quality music is wasted on you.
