This video Rocky Beach Scene - How to use textures will show you How to make sure that your textures are creating the correct depth and distance in your landscape paintings. Open soft textures will convey distance while textures that look heavier with hard edges will suggest that objects are closer to the viewer.

Lovely. Reminds me of Caldey island and the texture of its cliffs seen from the boat that took us around it! I used to think that trying to represent from afar what I knew the object looked like close up was the thing to do! I remember one teacher reminding ‘no twigs at five miles’ 😆. I really like this painting. I wish I could acquire the skill to take a fairly uninspiring looking reference photo and come up with such a lovely end result!

Informative. Good ideas. I need this. BTW; How do you deal with brush hairs left in the painting? I would very much like to know.

Hi Sandra. Just leave the hairs on the painting until it is dry. When you are sure that the painting is completely dry, just brush them off with your hand or a clean brush 👍

Does the foreground always have to be the star of the show? I feel its kind of a balancing act and any area can have more texture to make it stand out more as well as value.

Hi Douglas. I try not to place my focal point or centre of interest in the middle of my paper.
