Marciano was on a “no-lose” mission to achieving greatness and he did so by simply out-working and out-conditioning all fighting foes. His work ethic was nothing short of remarkably consistent and disciplined: hours of running, gym work, sparring, push-ups and sit-ups, countless medicine-ball thumps to the gut. Marciano was committed to his training regimen. Rocky is also remembered and honored for his class as an individual, not only his 49-0. He never boasted or ridiculed his opponents. Regardless what others may think, Rocky Marciano was a great champion.

So Marciano threw 100 punches in a round? Lol give me a break. Number one Marciano only weighed 185. So even if he threw 100 punches in a round what would that prove? Why compare a light heavyweight punch numbers to a true-Heavyweight. Only sik-minded fanboys would even try to compare.

In the 30's there were a few big heavyweights that were contenders but Joe Louis was able to handle them with a weight of about 200 so size wasn't everything. Would Marciano compete with the modern heavyweights at 235+. Probably not, but that isn't really important he isn't fighting now.

Yeah, well it helps to not have to worry about really hard hitting opponents,... He faced a total shell of what he once was Louis, and one of the best Light-Heavies in history. Pease tell me if he faced anyone who could punch with even close to the power of a Cleveland Williams, or a Sonny Liston, or a Joe Frazier, hell, even a Max Bear? LaStarza maybe??? He's vulnerable to criticism because of who he faced, which was just his poor luck. I haven't a doubt that he would have fought those guys if they were available during his time, but they weren't. I'll grant him this, there's NO ONE who had his level of stamina,... The guy was freak of nature as far as how much gas in the tank he had,... NO ONE else could fight with what seemed like MORE energy in the last two rounds of a fifteen round fight than they had in the first two, NO ONE.

I kind of get tired of this argument that Marciano couldn't compete against a modern day heavy weight. I mean, so what. These modern day heavy weights couldn't have existed back then either. The USA had just had a ten year depression where just existing was difficult. No one was over weight and it wasn't unusual to not eat meat for days and weeks. My dad's family lived on a chicken ranch when the depression was in full swing. They had chicken every day for 3 years. To the day he died in the late 80's my uncle wouldn't eat chicken. They could afford to buy food and no one was buying their chickens. Then they went through WW II. That is what many of them were doing so their careers had major gaps and continuity issues. Rocky didn't start fighting pro until 1947 and 23 years of age. He was an old man when he started. You simply can't compare boxers of different eras. It makes no sense.

@@blackDavid-n-mexicaliMargotm excuse me? Have you ever seen the joe Louis fight? His hands were lightning fast. Rocky Marciano is what you call a patient, steady fighter, he applies just the right amount of pressure and punches, steadily, and doesn’t waver in output. And does so the whole fight because of his insane cardio. Also like Joe Louis, neither one rushed there shots, they cared more about the quality, and timing of the punch rather than the speed. It’s the impact that matters, not the speed of journey to the impact. And there’s a reason the rock is undefeated lol

Walcott was 37 and 38 in his two fights with Rocky. Charles wasn't just two years older but here's the point with him he began his career as a middleweight then he moved up to light heavy weight .Rocky was a natural heavyweight. If the skill set are the same or close weight wins all the time Archie was 41 years old and he was another blown up light-heavyweight who originally began his career as a middleweight.

Can't agree with you there,... Most of the time Charles had no problem hitting Marciano,... dozens of clubbing short left crosses, plenty of right leads,... The thing that is most impressive about Marciano is that he WALKED RIGHT THROUGH THOSE PUNCHES like they were nothing more than probing jabs,... Marciano's defense was pretty rudimentary, essentially he just worked hard at presenting the smallest target as possible, but he was worthless at parrying, and just average at head movement to keep from being hit.

37 year old Joe Louis had already been fightin "17yrs" with 68 fights and 96 fights before 2 million soldiers during his 4 year military service before facing little Rocky. Joe's speedy reflexes were non-existent and it looked as if he was wadding through mud. And that 8 fight winning streak Joe had before fightin Rocky was a complete set-up using carefully selected hand-picked featherfisted opponents. 38/39 year old cruiserweight Journeyman Joe lost all throughout his entire career, beginning, middle and end. He had 49 wins 20 losses according to BoxRec. Walcott had already been fightin for "22yrs" with an abysmal 44% KO's before facing little Rocky. He definitely was not prime. Walcott Lost (20) times and was KO'd (6) times. Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles had already been fightin "15yrs" with 95 fights with an abysmal 43% KO's before facing little Rocky. His best boxing years were already behind him at light heavyweight, not moonlighting at cruiserweight. Charles Lost (25) times and was KO'd (7) times. 41 year old light heavyweight Archie Moore had already been fightin "20yrs" with 178 fights before facing little Rocky in 1955. Exactly 95% of his 141 TKO's came against welterweights, middleweights, light heavyweights and small cruiserweights. Moore Lost (23) times and was KO'd (7) times. Meantime little cruiserweight Rocky Marciano only fought a measly "8yrs" with only 49 fights before he abruptly quit during his prime at only 31yrs of age. If you eliminate his debut fight he actually fought "7yrs" because there was a 15 month gap between his 1st fight and 2nd fight. Little Rocky quitting so soon is not only shameful but not fair to other genuine Heavyweights that he's surpassed in the top 10 rankings. No way in hell this little dude should be ranked higher than Holmes Lewis Foreman Vitali Wladimir Holyfield Tyson Bowe Fury.

Most of the foolish attempts to denigrate Marciano are usually fueled by racism. The bullshit about the quality of the opposition he faced coming up and he beat washed up old men, his fights were fixed by the mob because he was Italian, etc.--just bullshit.Unlike most boxers Marciano started boxing late and had a brief amateur career, they knew he had potential because of his power but was crude and had to gain ring experience. It would not have been wise at that ealy point in his career to face top flight competition--have you ever looked at the quality of opposition Tyson faced on his way up? Many boxing people at the time thought Walcott fought a masterful fight in the first title fight vs Marciano and that he never looked better--he was NOT washed up. True Walcott had losses on his record but that does not diminish the caliber of fighter he was--Ray Robinson, the man widely considered to be the greatest pound for pound figjter of all time lost 19 fights. Charles was only 2yrs. older than Marciano so age is not a valid excuse for him losing--they like to say he had so many fights by the time he faced Marciano, but I view that as an asset giving him a massive edge in ring experiencing. Moore was listed as 38 vs Marciano and it was not until later that claims were made that he was 41--and it is irrelevant because he was at the top of his game vs Marciano --he was in fact so good that he beat the other young contenders to earn the shot at Marciano's title, and so good that he fought for another 8 yrs. and was good enough to face Ali. They talk about Marciano's opponents being small but Marciano was at a disadvantage in height, reach, and weight in most of his fights, he was not a big man beating up little guys. There was NEVER a shred of evidence of mob tampering with Marciano, on the contrary, word was put out that he was not to be tampered with or stained in any way. At least Marciano fought the best of what was available at the time. Dempsey avoided all black fighters and Louis for 12 yrs. of his title reign avoided every single top ranked black contender. The truly sad part about all the stupid, racist attempts to trash and denigrate a great fighter like Marciano, is that Marciano was highly respected as a fighter and loved as a friend by all of his black opponents, and black trainers of the day.

This reminds me alot of the first Tyson Holyfield fight after just recently watching that. Marciano's crouch was more pronounced to the right side most of the time. I notice that after Tyson no longer had Rooney in his corner that his bobs and weaves became less balanced and consitent. In the Holyfield fight he was constantly crouching to his left when rolling and bobbing putting himself directly in Holyfields power range and was easy to time since he wasnt mixing up his defense. Marciano sort of does similar movements as Tyson during that era except he crouches on the opposite side. He also does other little things that Tyson didnt do like grabbing arms on the inside and with his shorter arms was better in general on the inside than Tyson was. I wonder what a Marciano- Holyfield fight would be like. It would be somewhat similar to this fight because Holyfields is like a more modern carbon copy of Charles as far as his style is concerned. Yeah, I agree, during that not quite two year period at the beginning of his career, Tyson was a monster and he was just too big and too strong for either of these fighters, which isn't to take away from either of them, but THAT Tyson was incredible. What a price he payed for being that way though, he never says he was happy in those days,...

Folks tryin to say Marciano would weigh 220 lbs today is laughable. All the PEDs in the world ain't gonna help his extraordinarily short dwarfism arms grow longer. Marciano isn't even close to being a 220 lb Mike Tyson. Prime Tyson easily KOs little Rocky 10 outta 10 times!

Prime Tyson didn’t look so good against James Quick Tillis, that went the distance. Tillis was faster, and slowed Tyson down with some body punches he’d never taken before. Holyfield floored and went on to destroy Tyson with body punches.

44 Marciano opponents: We see their entire "CAREER" record, not a partial record. Seeing a boxers complete resume gives a more accurate evaluation how good, or how bad they are. Professional boxers can easily be evaluated using US school grades A, B, C, D, and F. Lee Epperson - 0 wins 1 loss with 0% KOs (F-level) Jimmy Weeks - 0 wins 1 loss with 0% KOs (F-level) Gilbert Cardone - 0 wins 3 losses with 0% KOs (F-level) John Edwards - 1 win 2 loss with 33% KOs (F-level) Bill Hardeman - 1 win 6 losses with 0% KOs (F-level) Humphrey Jackson - 4 wins 2 losses with 28% KOs (F-level) Harry Haft - 12 wins 8 losses with 35% KOs (F-level) James Connolly - 12 wins 9 losses with 33% KOs (F-level) Harry Bilazarian - 15 wins 12 losses with 35% KOs (F-level) Bob Jefferson - 3 wins 10 losses with 0% KOs (F-level) Harold Mitchell 4 wins 17 losses with 4% KOs (F-level) Gilley Ferron - 4 wins 13 losses with 17% KOs (F-level) Artie Donato - 7 wins 13 losses with 10% KOs (F-level) Johnny Pretzie - 10 wins 13 losses with 33% KOs (F-level) Don Mogard - 20 wins 16 losses with 15% KOs (F-level) Pete Louthis - 32 wins 14 losses with 35% KOs (D-level) Tommy DiGiorgio - 9 wins 15 losses with 4% KOs (F-level) Kenne Simmons - 9 wins 22 losses with 12% KOs (F-level) Art Henri -18 wins 29 losses with 18% KOs (F-level) Jimmy Walls - 20 wins 41 losses with 7% KOs (F-level) Ted Lowry - 71 wins 68 losses with 30% KOs F-level) Ted Lowry (twice) - 71 wins 68 losses with 30% KOs F-level) Gino Buonvino - 24 wins 15 losses with 10% KOs (F-level) Gino Buonvino (twice) - 24 wins 15 losses with 10% KOs (F-level) Joe Dominic - 18 wins 12 losses with 33% KOs (F-level) Eldridge Eatman - 22 wins 21 losses with 22% KOs (F-level) Willis Applegate -12 wins 16 losses with 13% KOs (F-level) Lee Savold - 104 wins 45 losses with 50% KOs (D-level) Phil Muscato - 56 wins 23 losses with 25% KOs (D-level) Bill Wilson - 56 wins 27 losses with 51% KOs (D-level) Johnny Shkor - 31 wins 19 losses with 42% KOs (F-level) Fred Beshore - 35 wins 17 losses with 24% KOs (D-level) Jimmy Evans - 18 wins 8 losses with 50% KOs looks okay until you see he fought 10 opponents with 10 fights or less. Eddie Ross - 19 wins 5 losses with 72% KOs looks okay until you see he fought 10 debuting amateurs and 7 other opponents with 10 fights or less. Bob Quinn - 20 wins 4 losses with 58% KOs looks okay until you see he fought 13 opponents with 10 fights or less. Bernie Reynolds - 53 wins 13 losses with 49% KOs looks okay until you see he fought 30 opponents with 15 fights or less. Pat Richards - 24 wins 9 losses with 39% KOs looks okay until you see who he fought 20 opponents with 10 fights or less. Carmine Vingo - 16 wins 2 losses with 38% KOs looks good until you see ALL 16 wins came against F-LEVEL opponents. Don Cockell - 66 wins 14 losses with 46% KOs looks okay until you see the majority of his career was at middleweight and light heavyweight. By the time he faced Marciano he was suffering from severe glandular disorders that wreaked havoc with his physique. He was sallow-skinned, fat, and had a nasty boil on his neck. Harry Matthews - 90 wins 7 losses with 58% KOs is a good B-level resume. Problem is he was a natural middleweight moonlighting at light heavyweight. Matthews weighed 130 lbs vs. Joey Parks who also weighed 130. Shouldn't one have to beat credible Heavyweight opponents to be respected as a legitimate Heavyweight champion? Even Marciano's best 3 opponents Walcott-Charles-Moore lost (68) times and were KO'd (20) times. Marciano never faced an elite fighter in his prime. Name one, just one prime elite fighter Marciano beat? Failing to name even one proves my comment rings true. Show me any respected boxing publication or analyst that claims Walcott Charles Moore were in their prime when they fought Marciano? *In the old days, ringers could boost their income by fighting repeatedly. Padding your record against weak opponents can yield good results- the real stumblebums are the guys who make a career of losing. In small-time fights, the less-talented fighter often gets the bulk of the cash; he is, after all, providing a valuable service by losing so reliably--The Ring Magazine IT'S CLEAR AS DAY WHY HE WENT 49-0.. WAY TOO MANY HOMELESS WALK-IN D AND F-LEVEL BOXERS TAKIN-DIVES AND PADDIN RECORDS FOR EASY $$$.. OR BEING FORCED TO BY THE SICILIAN UNDERWORLD THAT CONTROLLED EVERY SINGLE FACET OF BOXING DURING THE 50s!!! EVEN LITTLE ROCKY HAD SICILIAN MAFIA BOSS CARBO IN HIS BACK POCKET PROTECTING HIM BECAUSE THEY WERE MAKING MILLIONS THROUGH HIM.. THE DAY AFTER HE RETIRED HE IMMEDIATELY ABANDONED HIS KIDS AND WIFE TO CONNECT WITH HIS UNDERWORLD FRIENDS WHO HELPED HIM START HIS LOANSHARKING BUSINESS.. CRY AND SCREAM ALL YA WANT BECAUSE IT CANNOT EVER SWEEP IT UNDER THE CARPET!!! IT WAS REAL AND VERY WELL DOCUMENTED SO STOP LIVING IN DENIAL

Your grading system makes absolutely no sense. You state that C level is an average fighter that is still capable of winning a title. That is ridiculous. A fighter that is capable of winning a title is NOT an average fighter. He is amongst the best on the planet. Just more proof that you do NOT know what you are talking about

So let’s be realistic. Charles beat Marciano in this fight. A man who was past his prime and weighed 185lbs. How in the wide, wide world of sports do you think Marciano would have beaten a prime Muhammad Ali?…a prime nobody saw because he was robbed of it. In Ali,a man who was bigger, faster, and stronger than Charles. Smarter and more skilled. More elusive with much more firepower. In what alternate universe does this happen. And I don’t care what Ali graciously said about Marciano. A
