Evangelical Steven Pynakker interviews Rod Meldrum founder of the FIRM Foundation organization. This conversation/presentation is a response to John Dehlin's Mormon Stories interview of Simon Southerton. Rod gives his response to the interview, talks about a phone conversation he had with John Dehlin, discusses the Universal Model of Creation, being a nuanced Young Earth Creationist, his interest in meeting my previous guest anthropologist Thomas Murphy, and the importance of being able to discuss our differences civilly. It was a real privilege that Rod came on to my program to give his response. I am a self confessed "fan boy" of his so it was really cool to have him on!

I've followed Rod, Wayne, Jonathan and many others for a long time now. These are rock solid members doing tremendous research. I used to be a Meso-America believer. I always had my doubts about that theory...never about the Heartland. The evidence; DNA, geography, archeology, Native American traditions, language, artifacts, what Joseph and Oliver said, etc., not to mention what the scriptures themselves say are overwhelming. The Stone in the Hat is another one of these theories that is dividing the nembers of the church. Again, Joseph and Oliver never said they used a peep stone to translate the B of M. You may say it doesnt matter, that it has no impact on our eternal salvation. I disagree. We are losing members over this stuff. Contention is of the Devil. Just because you have some letters after your name doesn't automatically make you right. We used to burn people at the stake because they didnt believe in the Trinity. That didnt make the Trinity theory correct. Let's all calm down, get rid of our preconceived notions and biases. We were commanded to have childlike faith by our Savior. The philosophies of men mingled with scripture is not the way to go. We are doing the exact same thing the Apostles tried to prevent in the New Testament. That didn't turn out very well.

Another question for Rod, in case you interview him again: when Alma 22:32 states "And now, it was only the distance of a day and a half’s journey for a Nephite, on the line Bountiful and the land Desolation, from the east to the west sea;" is this measuring the travel speed on foot or on Tapir?

@@justdoityourself7134 It's not about me. And it's certainly not about the opinion of a fringe non-specialist. You can't declare that you privilege a 4,000 year old poem over scientific evidence and then claim you are a scientist. Science is only in conflict with a fundamentalist reading of the Bible. I would argue that discovery and proof create consensus. Great discoveries can't be made without funding and community. Okay, just listened to this YT interview. Does RM understand the “Rock cycle?” Or why Earth rotates on an axis? What is the cause of the rotation? We can have a belief system but belief doesn’t make it true. RM would benefit from taking a 6th or 7th grade science class. One more thing look this up: What is the skin color of chimpanzees? Chimpanzees are covered by a coat of brown or black hair, but their faces are bare except for a short white beard. Skin colour is generally white except for the face, hands, and feet, which are black. The faces of younger animals may be pinkish or whitish.

Since he mentions quartz. Optical Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) is an excellent dating process. Radioactive materials accumulate on quartz surfaces, unless solar uv light "strikes it off". You can determine the last time quartz saw the sun as a result. Not as precise as C14, but pretty good still and can determine much deeper time depth than C14.

I love those Stephen Hawking passages you shared. They show that even good scientists are drawn to go far beyond the observable in their statements and it is a good reminder to stick to what has been observed and tested when making scientific claims. Good science is based on observations that are as unbiased as possible and systematic experimentation. The ability for science to change is an important feature though as more observations and tests are done, it shouldn't be thought of as a bug.

Believing in God, he gives us time, to think, to feel, to come to understandings, to decisions, to recognitions, to learn, hopefully. And it comes to pass. Over time, that if we are Spiritually Intelligent, enough to go to Prayer in Sincerity to Humble ourselves, to open ourselves up to get out of ourselves far enough to accept, perhaps we lose our arrogance to really know a new truth that has been right in front of ourselves. Let's hope we don't know it all, for if we do, we are in trouble.

Rod is goofy for saying the big bang theory is the same as creation ex-nihilo when he cherry picked an author that doesn't represent scientific consensus. A super-compact ball of matter exploding outwards is obviously not creation ex-nihilo. And also, the big bang theory doesn't try to answer how the matter got there in one ball.

Everything in this dimension came from the NO THING in this dimension. Everything originally exists in the highest dimension (you could say it existed spiritually first) and when you lower the energy signature of things in the higher dimension they now exist in the lower dimension. Its like an electron moving from one energy shell to a shell of lower energy. So this dimension has always existed as long as energy exists at all the many frequencies in which it can exist. So energy in this dimension existed as a null or void but a Creator Intelligence from the higher dimension took that null and void of this NO THING medium and separated it into a light or compacted energy center existing in the darkness void or an energy conductor medium called outer space. Think of an atom with electrons orbiting only in the first or closest energy shell, and although there are no other electrons existing and orbiting in the next energy shell, that energy shell and those beyond it still exist howbeit that they are null and void of any objects. So matter can become immaterial in the sense that it can revert to pure energy or it can be changed into matter.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Rod, if you want to change the paradigm of numerous fields of science, then you need to provide a lot more evidence than this. Basically, this is you and your group starting with a conclusion, and working out how the world would have to be for your beliefs to be true. Rod's understanding of science is seriously lacking. He hears a few things here and there and extends them to make outrageous conclusions. For example, he thinks a liquid is necessary for gravity to form a planet into a sphere and uses mountains as proof. But rock has limited strength and deforms under gravity just like a liquid. The size of mountains decreases with the mass of the planet. Likewise he ways the core of the earth could be a giant ice crystal, ignoring its density, temperature/pressure profile, and magnetism. @@paulblack1799 ...... There is a conference in Layton Utah on April 7th to the 9th, if you are sincere in wanting to have your questions answered and gain more information I suggest you go to that conference because there will be people in attendance who have expertise in each of these areas and if by chance there is not someone who can answer your questions, they will put you in contact with someone who can who is fully qualified..... While rod has much knowledge of certain areas, he is not a scientist and lacks adequate background to discuss things of this nature. I myself am not LDS but I know these people and the work they are engaged in and the scientific team who heads up the project, none of which are LDS.

I love the information coming out from the FIRM Foundation. People like Rod and Wayne are doing some amazing work! I look forward to the conferences twice a year to learn about the new discoveries being made about BofM geography. I think the UM is closer to the truth than what is forced down our throats since we were in kindergarten. However, over the last few years I've been convinced of Biblical Cosmology. We don't live on a spinning ball, dinosaurs didn't exist, and gravity is a hoax. There is a SDA you tube channel called Earthen Vessels that has some excellent documentaries that show some compelling information to at least consider. Why the lies? To hide God. As for the world-wide flood, in a nutshell: Antarctica isn't a continent, it's the ice wall border around our flat earth. It is the highest land on the earth, so serves as the container of the oceans, much like the edge of a lake is the container holding in the lake water. I know there is cognitive dissonance when one first is presented with this information. But look into it! Look into the Antarctica Treaty, that is a helpful step. What are they hiding?

I was the one who mentioned a few times to John Dehlin via comments on his video's to have Rod on his podcast. But he and Southerton really hashed the Heartland theory. What else would you expect from Dehlin and his group. It was really disingenuous which is what most of Mormon Stories is in relation to the Church and the gospel anyways. Your not going to find much truth there.

The CES letter is authored by disgruntled Mormons who have an axe to grind. It comprises unreliable (unverifiable) third party source material, which purposefully portrays Mormon teachings out of context. Mormons, who feel guilty about wanting to renege on their moral commitments, use the CES Letter as a rationale to leave the church, because in reality they've adopted a “worldly-overview”, and the distortion of the CES allows them to “sin” without actually owning their decisions as long as they can blame the church. Cognizant dissonance is patently sanctimonious, but that is the disingenuous world we live in. John Dehlin’s immutable behavior sets the tone for his kabuki play, where departing Mormons lament over the grief of losing their close knit community while framing their morality cult as freedom from the a high demand church. He became a Mormon critic after adopting feminist concepts that encourage an acceptance of sex outside of marriage and homo-sexuality, which by any constraint mocks the Christian Bible teachings and embodies the Anti-Christ, Anti-Family challenge of our time. Dehlin portrayed his disdain for Bible teachings by criticizing the leadership for not allowing women and the LGBTQ members to hold key administration and teaching positions in the church. When Dehlin was unceremoniously excommunicated for his condemnation of the Churches’ refusal to adopt his secular reforms, he became yet another enemy of Mormonism in its righteous endeavor to restore the family culture.

The Mormon church wasn’t against just LGBT and women holding administrative positions, they were against black people doing they same. They only received “revelation” changing this stance 20 years after the Civil Rights movement, and hundreds of years after the Abolitionist movement. A church led by Jesus? It’s your decision to make!!
