This is a Rod & Staff Math Arithmetic 1 Review and Flip Through as well as how it compares to Math Lessons for a Living Education Levels 1 & 2. Rod & Staff Arithmetic is a great curriculum for struggling learners and also is great for parents who really want a strong early math foundation and number sense awareness for their kids.

Thank you for the review. I watched & went to my local Homeschool Store. I'd been almost decided on using it prior to watching your video, but liked how you walked through it. I found all components of the R&S Math 1 program used and in perfect condition today. I'll be starting it with my 6 year old son in September. I've got a ton of math manipulatives that I plan to incorporate. I recently switched to R&S 5 for my twins. They feel they've learned more in the first few weeks than they ever had in prior programs we've used. I love and trust the R&S brand. I've used it for English and Science in previous years. It's so good a building a solid foundation.

Thank you so much for this! Such a thorough review and walk through! My kids have only used Singapore Math the Primary US Edition. While we love Singapore, I’m finding them having to do a lot counting of math facts. Therefore, we’re actually starting Rod & Staff, for Summer Bridge and reinforcement. Hopefully it’s a smooth transition for us! Especially, since we’re also using Rod & Staff for ENG, SCI., SOC. STUDIES, and READING!

Thank you so much for this!!! So helpful. I love MLFLE, but both of my school age kids have struggled to learn math facts. We did Christian Light Education math for both of them when they were in 1st grade and while that had a great math fact plan, it didn't really work for my kids. Rod & Staff seems to have an AMAZING plan for learning those basic math facts with all the review. Some kids, like you said, just need that repetition to learn them. I am certainly going to keep this in mind when my boys start Math Lessons. I could see using MLFLE with them & then pausing that as you have done with Sophie and doing Rod & Staff. Do you think you will go back to MLFLE with Sophie? I just really love the ease of implementing the MLFLE lessons! It is so simple & the workload doesn't overwhelm my non-math loving child. Thanks again for doing this flip through. I really appreciate it. I am so glad you have found something that is working for Sophie!

Hi I’m so glad I found your channel!! I’m currently using Math U See Alpha for my 2nd grader who has some learning disabilities. He’s about 1/2 way through the book. My 1st grade daughter is also using this same curriculum separately, and is about to pass him. He just isn’t grasping their methods and concepts, and isn’t progressing at all. Do you think Rod&Staff would be a better alternative? If so, do you think it would be better to start him at the beginning, or find a point mid-way through the book?
@simplejoyfilledliving

It's hard to know. I will say that Sophie doesn't do well with a bunch of manipulatives. They just didn't make sense to her. I know that MUS also uses a lot of manipulatives. Do you think that could be an issue for him? That it just isn't clicking? Rod and Staff worked for my daughter because it is really just old fashioned math with a lot of memorization and after a few weeks of that, it started to click for her. I still use crayons for manipulatives if I need to, but for the most part, less is more for her. R&S 1st grade was the same as MLFLE 1st and at least half of second grade, but I am not as familiar with MUS as far as what is covered in each level. Another point, which I am not sure I covered in the video, is that Memoria Press uses Rod & Staff in their special needs curriculum. (It is called Simply Classical). That's where I got the idea that it might work for my daughter with special needs.

At first, I was wondering how we're supposed to know what to say or have the child do. I forgot about the separate teacher's guide. This is very interesting to me because it reminds me of my grade school textbooks in the 80s which were mostly black and white. I'm not sure if the lack of color would bother my daughter but I will definitely keep this in mind for options/back-ups. Thank you for sharing! A little off-topic but do I remember correctly that you've tried Horizons and/or Abeka in the past? I'm interested in those, too. We're currently doing Abeka Social Studies K5 and Discovering God's World. I'm liking both of those so I'm considering trying their Math and LA for 1st grade. 🙂

@@simplejoyfilledliving I'm seriously struggling with a bit of FOMO now that we're getting closer to being official. Notice of Intent is due in November when she turns 6. 😐 My original plan was Master Books and TGATB for spines and Evan-Moor/Horizons Workbooks for supplements. I don't know what it is but we're two months in and we're both getting bored. So we're on a break from our "rehearsal year" and back to strictly playschooling. We're enjoying the Abeka Science and Social Studies, though. 😄 I might end up doing what you did last year with switching between a gentler curriculum and a rigorous one to vary the pace. I like the idea of gentle/CM style but I'm naturally drawn to structured/traditional style, so I'll try to do both.

Do you think it would work to do MLFLE and have the rod and staff teachers manual for a supplement? Since it has the teaching and workbook answers in the manual could use problems on a whiteboard for extra practice. I just really like the fun side of MLFLE but thought having rod and staff on hand would help beef up topics we need more practice with (and also another way of learning as opposed to getting the MLFLE extra work)

Do you know if abeka is advanced? My daughter is about the same level as math as Sophie. If you were to do Abeka with Sophie what level would you choose? I’m having such a hard time between 1 and 2. I also got rod and staff level 2 for her… math has been such a struggle for us I’m trying to find what works for her. I’m hoping a combination of rod and staff and Abeka will help 😕 also she can’t do addition or subtraction without manipulatives she is 7 will be 8 at the end of November and has special needs.. do you think this is a big problem? Or is this okay..?
@simplejoyfilledliving
@simplejoyfilledliving 3 жыл бұрын
Abeka definitely moves quickly. I would do 1st or kindergarten with Sophie. About the manipulatives-it just depends on if you want your child to memorize facts. I decided that was important for Sophie because use of manipulatives is hard for her. Rod and Staff is very good for kids who haven’t yet memorized facts because it moves slowly. Sophie has memorized hers just by doing the work in the Rod & Staff math book. We haven’t needed flash cards or anything extra.

What would you start with in kindergarten for an average student? I'm torn between rod and staff and saxon. I'm looking at level one of both. We started a little of rod and staff but my daughter thinks it's boring. I'm unsure of Saxon though because it doesn't spend much time on the new concept and that didn't work for another child of ours. I also love the fact mastery with rod and staff but i wonder if it's Overkill and at what expense. I want a solid foundation but don't want to miss certain topics that would be in Saxon but not in rod and staff. I'm really losing sleep over this. On the other hand, my daughter would choose horizons all day long but i need a teachers guide that will help me teach a concept bc i don't know how to explain things well.

For a child without learning struggles, I would use Math Lessons for a Living Education, Horizons, or TG&TB. I’m not a big fan of early Saxon levels before 4th grade vey they are painfully slow. Rod snd staff is also extremely repetitive for a child without special needs. However you could skip some of the repetition after you see the child has mastered the concept.

My oldest is a very strong math student, and we used Saxon and Shormann with her. This is what I would recommend:Saxon through 8/7 in 7th grade (pre-algebra), then move to Shormann with Algebra 1 in 8th, Algebra 2 in 9th (geometry credit is earned after completing algebra 2), then pre-calculus in 10th, calculus in 11th, either calculus 2 in 12th or dual enrollment in statistics or college algebra. This is the path my daughter is on and she’s currently in 11th grade and taking calculus. We plan to dual enroll next year for math.
