During the editing process with the Rode Plugin, I felt like something is off. The sound sounded ripped and had some weird phasing. What do you think? It was a good test, but I'll only use this Rode VR microphone with the Zoom F6 ( ambisonic decoder already included and purchase the Sennheiser VR to use with the MixPre6ii. This microphone is calibrated to use with the Sound Devices and the plugin.

Very interesting to see you approaching (pun intended, yes) aviation sounds! One of the biggest struggles when filming airplanes is getting a well balanced sound. When the airplane is far away, the sounds are very dull, but when the airplane gets closer and passes, the microphone peaks. I'm still looking for the best way to capture everything well balanced, but attaching my NTG-4+ to an F3 has helped me out 'OK-ish' so far. If you do have any tips, i'm VERY keen in hearing them!

Nice recordings. I also thought that the NT-SF1 clipped on the first recording. The DPAs sounded great, as always. Maybe you need to build a giant wind basket that fits over your head 😄Or maybe you could sew a 10cm wide strip of fake fur to the hat, which could look a bit more normal. Thank you again for letting us share your experiences. Viele Grüße - Til.

Thank you Til! We actually tried that out with the Cinela and also the Rycote wind protection but the issue is that the fabric rubs against the ear and the mic picks it up. We need some kind of separation.

I went there on Saturday. As you mentioned, the photographers and other people there were very noisy. Non-stop talking. I set up my Ambeo VR mic and a pair of MKH 8020s and 8040s. The 8040s sounded great in an ORTF configuration pointing upwards, although the gust of wind after each jet flyby was too much for the Rycote Softies I had on them. Need to invest in better wind protection for them! I didn't experience any issues with the Ambeo VR mic going into the F6, so the ripping sound you experienced is probably due to the decoding software. The Amebo VR mic has about the same SPL rating as the Rode. Thanks for the great content!

Your videos has got me thinking of getting a Zoom F3. Any budget friendly stereo mics that you'd recommend? I've seen the $1000 budget video and as much as I would love to get the 8022, is there a cheaper alternative? Love your videos! It has made me more appreciative of ambient noises in videos and in person.
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds Жыл бұрын
Hi! Oh yes there are a lot of alternatives but the problem with a two microphone setup is all the add ons add up to almost the same price at the end. Cables, stereo bars, wind protection etc. Look into Line Audio, they have some nice microphones and than start comparing the extra cost. You could get cheaper wind protection for that.

I've just bought this DPA 4590/Zoom F3 combo myself and was wondering about the beanie ! It seems like a good idea for stealth recordings as well as it being a wind protector. Is there any particular 'beanie' requirements I should look for (materials etc) or will any generic beanie be good enough. How do they affect the sound quality in general? What other suggestions do you have as an alternative for the wind noise with this combo. I'm a spectacle/glasses wearer and I'm hoping this isn't going to cause issues; otherwise I may have to consider contact lens.
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds Жыл бұрын
The best way to figure this out is through experimenting and recording to see what kind of beanie suits you the best. The biggest challenge with having a beanie or any covering too close to the microphone is the potential scratching noise when moving around. Regarding wind protection, have you considered the Soundman binaural wind protection? It's quite large and not very stealthy, but it might be worth considering. It's received mixed reviews, so it's not for everyone, but could be an option to explore. Perhaps an even better solution might be a 3D printed enclosure that fits comfortably around your ears, or a soft material that can create enough space between the microphone and wind protection. The key is ensuring that there's sufficient space to prevent wind noise but not too much that it muffles the sound. But you're right that it's a challenge because no one has really created a perfect solution for this. For truly professional binaural recordings, many people opt for the Neumann head, but that's quite a hefty investment.
@edwardnixon1782
@edwardnixon1782 Жыл бұрын
A small detail: your beanie is actually a "toque" (Canadian -- a close-fitting knitted hat, often with a tassel or pom-pom on the crown -- pronounced /tōk/ - long 'o') which at this time of year in most regions of Canada becomes a requirement for heat retention in the head. Does good service as a wind shield though. A question: What would you recommend as a more cost sensitive alternative to the binaural, ear mounted mics for capturing 2 channels? Fun one; thanks!

Thank you Edward! Hmm, you can check out the Roland EC 10 EM, or some Soundman microphones, There is another company in the US that makes some but I just forgot the name. I will look and reply again. Another interesting idea is a dummy head DIY with Clippy's. We have a video about this.

Hello, Teme! Good point but setting levels is a breeze with an SD MixPre 6ii, and with such 32-bit recorder, you can only clip audio when the SPL of the microphone was reached. It's possible that this was the case in the early recordings, although I'm not sure if it was higher than 129dB. But maybe :)

Hm that distortion is quite weird esp. as the dpa capsules have a similar max SPL rating (134) as the NT-SF1 (129). Also, the 4560 has less LF roll-off as it's omni, too... maybe the beany shielded it just enough, or the dpas have more "headroom" over spec. Does the rode distort in the original a-formst data? This way you could find out if it's (one or more) capsules oberlosding or if it's some weird decode problem. Or it might even be a problem in "mixdown" aka ambidonics decoding to stereo if the codec does some run time difference tricks there (as e.g. UHJ might do). btw there is a vid on yt that explains why rockets sound ripped (it's in the actual air pressure patterns), but I don't think this applies to jet planes, esp. near idle. Pity! Ambisonics could be awesome for planes... 9:20 love that expression of awaiting the plane with your headset instead of earplugs. Keep up! I have a feeling the distortion can be fixed somewhere without buying abother mix.
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds Жыл бұрын
Hi Lilian, it didn't distorte in the original recordings and the interesting fact is that I have a hole in the 360 space. It could be the fact not using a decoder? The recording itself is also a four channel mix and not stereo. If you have four speakers you could hear it. I try this again with the Zoom F6.
@lilianweiss2028
@lilianweiss2028 Жыл бұрын
@@FreeToUseSounds That sounds really strange (literally, haha..). A hole in B-Format could be a dead capsule? Maybe it's just not really noticeable for quieter sounds. But now I am just guessing. Let's see if the F6 solves the problem!

Hey Marcel. Definitely some issues with the first recording when the plane was directly above you at the loudest point. It did very much sound ripped apart and heavily distorted. Seems odd and there must be a fix. Surely plenty of people use the Rode with a MixPre6. I just had a look online and couldn't find much, only someone saying that you MUST record in A format (raw) with the Rode NT-SF1, because recording in B format is designed for Sennheiser Ambeo only. OK, I have to say I don't even know what A Format means, but that's what others online say. Or could it be caused by the channel linking and the sudden huge increase in noise from the plane as the MixPre is trying to quickly match gain on all four linked capsules. I have no idea really, I'm no expert. Just trying to guess I suppose. Anyway, I wish you and Libby a wonderful week. Happy recording !
