Rodney Dangerfield

5 жыл бұрын

Rodney Dangerfield was one of the final guests on The Jackie Gleason Show, which had ran in various forms from 1952 to 1970. After a quick chat, Jackie gave the stage to Rodney to perform some of his classic stand-up. Originally aired February 7, 1970.
1:47 “I just broke up with my psychiatrist. This afternoon, for the first time I told him I got suicidal tendencies. He told me from now on I have to pay in advance.”
4:30 “When I drink, the next day I have to do two things. I gotta try to locate my car, and I gotta bring back the car I took.”
6:34 “It’s a rough school. I looked in the graduation book. Each kid has two poses, one front and one profile.”

I miss both Jackie and Rodney, I remember sitting with my Dad on Sunday nights watching Gleason. My Dad has been gone for 30 years and I still miss him. It never goes away. This humor never gets old.

Watching on a black and white television set with a 2" speaker. We didn't have a color set until 1972. Variety shows like Jackie Gleason, Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett, Sid, Dean Martin, Red Skelton, Johnny Cash. My Dad would laugh so loud just like my grandfather would and like my brother does now.

I had the honor of seeing him perform in front of a full house about a year before he passed. He lost some of his timing, he was slurring some of the lines, told most of his older jokes. When he finished we all gave him a roaring standing ovation for about 5 minutes chanting "Rodney!!" He tried not to cry. We love you Mr. Dangerfield!! Here is the respect you always deserved. Just thinking how hard the angels are laughing when he performs in heaven.

I love in back to school when he went into the sorority house in search of his son and pulled the shower curtain back on a naked girl. He whips it shut and yells, "I didn't see a thing!" He then opens it again and says with his pop eyed expression, "You're perfect!" It could have been offensive but with Rodney it's just funny.

This reminded a true story of my father and older brother that happened in 1992. Civil war was raging in Mogadishu, Somalia. My older brother and another young man stayed at home to take care of our father. Our father refused to leave. He was 80-years-old then and said he would like to die in our home than flee. He was very stubborn. So my mother asked our older brother to remain with him. Another relative also stayed. One day, a clan militia arrived, who knew my father and his staying. They insisted he was staying because of the protection of material things he hid inside our home. There was none and did not believe when they were told. They told our father they will take our brother and the other relative if he does not bring out the valuables. My father kept telling them there were none. So, they said it is the final warning that they will take them. My father started playing psychological game with them. He told them, "Don't even bother bringing back their shoes." My brother was surprised and thought the old man has lost it. They took them and brought to their little headquarters. They had a little arguments among themselves of what to do with them. Some of the militia believed my father was telling the truth. While they were arguing, the other clan militia attacked and they went to the front line. My brother and the relative escaped. They stayed in an abandoned house until the fight was done, which always happened in sunset. No body fights in the dark. They moved house by house in the night, careful and avoiding both militias because the other one would shoot on sight anyone that came from the other side. My father was relieved after their return. He sent my brother to us the very next day because he knew the wrath of my mother had something happened to our brother.
