I'm almost positive that I ran into an issue that seems to be plaguing people with the SD Card reader. My take is that there is enough heat to not only destroy SD Cards, but be able to ruin the SD Card Reader itself.
I ran through enough tests where I'm convinced it's a hardware issue. I hope it's not and I hope there is a driver, or some update that can be released. But with the testing I did, I returned my unit as I believe there could be additional failures due to heat.
I hope everyones units hold up well. I just wanted to put this out as soon as possible though for people that might be experience similar issues.
Unfortunately I've run mine in Turbo many times where the system is hitting 95c because I've been benchmarking it (which I think could be part of it). After all the benchmarking and testing, I recommend disabling cpu boost and setting manual power levels, especially now with what happened to mine (see links below):
Disable CPU Boost: • ROG Ally | Disable CPU...
Set Manual Power Levels: • ROG Ally | Use these M...

1st I would like to thank you for all the testing you did. In my own testing I’ve found that everyone’s testing is a little inconsistent. I’ve tested 2 1TB cards and they both had an issue. My 400gb card works without issues on the Asus provided drivers. I’m hoping it is a driver issue but your evidence is compelling.

One thing I want to add, just in case it might help you. I think lower class speed cards can still work fine. Almost like the SD Card is slowly burning out. So if the 400GB card you're using is rated at a lower speed, that might be why it's working. I believe any class U3 and above card on my unit would have never worked.

That's what I'd recommend for upgrading the storage as I haven't seen them change anything about the design. And I've heard of other things not working after people sent their unit in for repair. It's unfortunate, but I probably would have still bought it even if there was no SD Card reader.

--10-JUL - Asus released an updating stating "under certain thermal stress conditions the SD card reader may malfunction". Aka, heat is killing it. They also said if you're experiencing issues with your SD card to RMA the unit. So just be aware if you're using an SD Card. --30-JUN - I bought a new ROG Ally and ran the same set of tests on it, including re-formatting it, updating it to the latest and greatest, etc. The Samsung SD Card is working perfectly in the new unit, check out the video here! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bayKoKqlrp7LoY0.html This is super unfortunate and I hope this doesn't affect others. Also, I apologize if I don't sound as upbeat. I liked the ROG Ally more than any other device I've bought like this, and I had been troubleshooting it for hours and hours. I hope Asus is able to get this ironed out, and that it's not what it looks like to me. Happy gaming guys! Update #1: I scrubbed through footage to find the Manufacture Date (MFD) of my unit, it shows 05/23. I saw some comments and Reddit posts with people getting newer units stating they didn't have the issue. However mine is very recent with it being 05/23. So I'd say be cautious when exchanging as even a more recent version like mine still had the issue. Update #2: Looks like Asus is still working on figuring out what the issue is with the SD Card (as well as other issues). They're recommending that you RMA the device if you're having an issue so they can further troubleshoot those units to see what exactly is happening.

I even tried running TRIMM from the steam deck on the EVO then formatting it again to windows to see, I tried NTFS, exFAT, CMD to clean it in/format it. It really seems like an SD Card Reader issue. I have yet to put a SD card in my ally, but can you check to see if the SD card is extremely hot. SD cards will not work if the heat threshold is above a specific temperature is based on the manufacturer. I have the same issue. It’s a design flaw from the heat building up near the card reader. On battery, adjust your Fan 1 to 4000 RPM (about 30%)minimum, your Fan 2 can be off. On power, adjust your Fan 1 to 5000 RPM (about 40%) minimum, Fan 2 to 3000 RPM (about 20%). If you properly cool the CPU then maybe you could say it’s not really a flaw. The CPU runs hotter than you think, so it’s not a bad thing to cool it more for a longer life cycle. I can’t believe you returned it for this simple adjustment, haha. However, making videos of flaws in the Ally is exactly what people want to watch, go buy another one and address more issues, loved the content, thanks!
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
Thats such an oversight on Asus' part. I don't mind adjusting/tinkering with it. If you disabled CPU boost and set manual power levels, you can keep the system running really well around 75c under load. I have both of those videos on my channel and it helps a ton with heat. I think for most people though, they're wanting to buy it, install games and play. I suspect the readers are failing because of the initial bump in Turbo mode with the watts climbing to 40+ and 95c. Glad you like the content! :)

I suspect you are right about people, pull it out of the box and play. But I bought it because it was so versatile, guess people should know what they are buying before spending that amount of ca$h. If you love the scalable power of the CPU then you will love the Ally, but you MUST adjust the fans too for sure… or overheat the SD card, haha.

@filt3rless so glad I found this video. My unit was working perfectly since launch. Ran custom tan curves before trying an sd card. Used an sd card for a mouth without issues. Now all of a sudden I’m having the same issues here - system is freezing, won’t shut down/restart etc. As soon as remove the card the issues vanish. I’m on the latest Bios, I was hoping that fixed the issue. Card worked for a day then the same issues reappeared. I’m hoping ASUS addresses the issue. If not I’ll have to RMA my unit. Until then I’ll just move games around to the internal ssd.

I had the same exact issue. At first I thought it was software as well and tried to diagnose the issue like you and also did fresh installs. Finally came to the conclusion that it was a faulty reader because it would start working normally when the system is cooled and reader would act up again once it gets heated. I had it swapped out. My first unit had a March manufactured date which has received many complaints of issues. The new unit has an April manufactured date and it has been solid, even came packaged better. I also noticed that the reader on the new unit will eject the card when I want to take it out, whereas the first unit could barely eject it. I also set the fan curve to be more aggressive on the new unit just to prevent it from heating up too much; highest temp it reach now is between 70-75 degrees.

I was doing a fun video comparing the ROG Ally to my Asus laptop, Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck running Metro 2033 on Turbo. Shortly after this the card failed, so I suspect heat. This has happened to me as well. First card was a silicone power from Amazon and it did froze the system. So I decided to use a SanDisk 250gb card just for emulation. I turned up fan speeds and low and behold at random it happened again. My unit will still read other cards when I put them in which tells me the SD card reader is still working to a degree. For now I put a 1tb SSD inside of it and am just hoping for a fix from ASUS since my return window has ended.

I hope Asus is able to fix the issue soon as well. One thing that could matter is if you're running a higher class speed card vs lower class. So something like a U3 vs a U1, or even a non UHS card. The main issue with a card lower than a U3 / V30 class is write speeds for games, as anything below is 10MB/sec write or less which is brutal. Let me know what classes the cards you used where if you get chance, it could help others out and I can create a pinned comment about it.

It seems to be extremely common based off the discord server as well as comments I see on my videos. It's more just a matter of time it seems. Some people have even run the system at low wattage, yet still had the card go out. So I'd say it's an issue that plagues every system right now. My justification is I'd still have bought the Ally even if there was no SD Card Reader. Right now it's working on the new one (but I don't even use it as I don't want to ruin my card).

I have 2 other videos on my channel about "Disabling CPU Boost" and "Setting Manual Power Levels". Those will help the system stay under 80c the entire time. Usually running around 70-75c. So that would definitely help. You can even manually turn the fans up more to have it run cooler. The real culprit I think is the default Turbo mode. It boost for 2 minutes when you start a game making the system hit 95c non-stop. So the manual power settings video I made stops that, then the CPU Boost video helps keep wattage even lower, and temps lower, still getting really good performance. Hope this helps :)

This is really concerning, and I hope it's not a widespread issue. I've had my ROG ally since launch day and haven't had any issues other than the software issues that are the fault of Windows 11. With that said, I have a 1TB microSD card in my Ally, and while it has been working fine, I know that the Ally can get pretty hot and that it is next to the exhaust on top of the system. Obviously I have concerns as I don't want to lose my Ally or my microSD card. I know that Asus says that they acknowledge this issue and are looking into it, but the more I read about it the more I believe it may actually be a hardware issue. I don't know for sure so we can't say, All I do know is that there was a similar issue with the steam deck killing microSD cards as well, but that issue has since been resolved. I also have the exact same microSD card within my Steam Deck and it has never given me a problem. If this turns out to be a hardware issue it'll be a huge problem for everyone. They would have to issue a massive recall and that will not be good for the sales of the ally and the adoption of the ally.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
That is spot on, thanks for commenting :). When I first got my Steam Deck I actually ran into the SD Card slowing down to a crawl, it turns out it was a thing called "TRIM" that they now have built in called "Storage Maintenance Task". At the time though, it wasn't an option and had to be run manually in the Konsole. What would happen is after you've filled up the sd card, then removed some games and tried adding new games, it'd slow down. It had something to do with it not writing over the data of the deleted games/new empty space properly. I thought I had card failures on it at first, but then realized TRIM was causing it. I don't show it in the video, but I even tried using TRIM on the EVO then re-formatting it to windows, just to see if maybe that was it. Unfortunately it really seems like a hardware issue as you said :/. If it is, hopefully Asus will stand behind getting it resolved for people ASAP.

It’s such a shame. I really like the ally way more than the steam deck. But I had to return mine and go crawling back to the steam deck after hearing about all these sd card failures

I did the same thing, I have that Samsung EVO card in the steam deck with a bunch of games loaded on it, no issues. Very low watt/heat usage on the Steam Deck compared to the Ally. It is hard to go back to the Steam Decks level of performance after using the Ally though haha. Hopefully Asus gets this figured out soon.

@@filt3rless for me the hardest part is going back to the steamdeck screen. Always thought the steamdeck had a decent display but after playing on the ally I don’t feel that way at all. Vibrantdeck helps but still not close.

@@gooddempsey Haha so true! The responsiveness, clarity, and everything about the Ally screen is leaps above. It sucks Asus is teasing us with such amazing hardware, but then having a couple, whats looking like, fatal flaws :/ On the Steam Deck I recently enabled developer mode, and updated to the main channel & Steam OS 3.5, it now has a built in color slider (as I didn't want to install 3rd party plugins this go around). I was thinking about doing a video on that, but I'm not sure people should be running preview/beta channels as they could run into issue. Luckily Steam OS 3.5 should be coming out soon! I just want Valve to take what the ROG Ally did, improve it, and put it in a Steam Deck 2. That'd be an instant pre-order for me.

the SD card position is simplely too close to the exhaust vent and gets heated
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
It definitely seems that way to me. And SD Cards usually have a heat rating of 85c, while it's not touching the heat exchange, it's still so close to something that is venting off 95c that I think it's definitely an issue.

I’ve had the same issue with my 256 Samsung evo. Thought it was cooked. I bought a San disk extreme pro 512 and did the same thing. I do think it is a software issue as it worked fine for weeks until an auto update rendered the sd card reader useless. Asus has made a public statement about the issue. I love my ally too much to return it and I have installed a 2tb ssd in it so I don’t need the 512 sd card.

Hey I just bought a brand new ROG Ally and I followed the exact same steps as in this video, and my SD Card worked perfectly. The Samsung in the video. So I'm thinking for sure it's hardware, or the new system should have done it as well. I tested it before all the updates and after updating everything to the latest, no issues. I just posted the video a few hours ago.

It's related to heat in my opinion. I found out a lower class card would work, but the 2 higher class V30 cards didn't. So I suspect the reader itself was on the way out, and couldn't handle faster cards. The reader I believe is rated at UHS-II which is 300MB/Sec, so U3/V30 cards I was using are using around 30% of the readers capability. I ended up swapping my ROG and the new one had no issues with the exact same card that wasn't working before, so definitely something with the reader itself in my case.

I agree. I have 2 other videos on the channel that will get the system down into the 70's the entire time. Almost no performance loss. One is disabling CPU Boost, the other is setting power levels manually to 25W. It helps a lot. I was benchmarking mine and working on creating a fun video for the channel comparing my Asus laptop, Nintendo Switch, Steam deck and Ally, but then it failed :/. If I get another one, I'm permanently disabling CPU Boost and never unlocking the power settings or using Turbo mode 🤣
