Nice job in steep country. Used to run those old Leupold MKIV optics back when but i didnt care for the MIL/MOA setup and now theres much better options for a lot less. Still you make it work. Im enviois you folks get to hunt deer that are feral. In the states hunting seasons are short and most places you get a tag for one animal.

Amazing you have put so much time effort and care into your calculations and using multiple devices to produce much accuracy as possible. It's very rare to see any deer run away. Your kill rate is impressive, specially with a fellow hunter targeting the same deer. Makes sense.

I've never had an opportunity to shoot an animal at these distances. I think the perspective shown here is very good and key in understanding the relationship between wind drift and shot placement, again I have no experience with these distances but I liked seeing that you use .308 and 300 WSM (presumably to account for subtle advantages they both have in different condition). IMHO These shots are taken from very humane and safe distances and it is obvious that you have spent a lot of time target shooting and practicing in these conditions.

Another wicked vid Rogee, a couple of questions. For windage adjustment why do not adjust the L/R moa using the turret on the scope, but instead manually give it x cm lead or lag? How do you judge wind speed, do use a Kestral type meter ? Cheers R
@rogeeproductions25093 жыл бұрын
Cheers Richard...I choose to hold wind so i can quickly make adjustments if I miss and should the animal reposition itself I know crosshair is at zero rather having a windage dial on it which I would have compensate for follow-up shot. I missed a stag on the first shot in this vid kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ps9njbFqu8_GoX0.html and it moved 70-80m to the left and 30m further up the hill after the shot. I had re-valuate the wind call and make those adjust all in scope...and nailed it!! ....That was a bloody long answer!!!...I use a Kestrel to teach myself how to read wind indicators I then use that knowledge to assess the wind effect on my bullet at the foreground middle ground and at the target. As you probably know a wind meter will only give a reading where your standing...never out where the bullet is heading

If I could afford a trip to New Zealand, I would love to hunt that kind of terrain. Can't wait to see more .308 stuff since that's what I have. (LOL). My current set up is a Howa 1500 heavy varmint in a GRS Bifrost. I also hand load for both my bolt gun and my semi auto. In my bolt gun I run a 175 grain PPU over 40 grains of AR-Comp. When I hunt with my AR10 I run a 155 BTHP over 42 grains of AR-Comp. I haven't killed my first deer yet but I keep my marksman skills sharp and hunt every chance I get. In the off season I hunt predators and pigs as much as I can. The Farmers here hate them both.

I love your methods and your dedication to safety, and recovery. I also admire your ability to get up at some ungodly hour to hit the road for a hunt!! The older I get, the harder I find that. Just curious about why you didn't stick with the stock the rifles you came with - it seems like a lot of money to spend at H&F or whatever, only to discard the manufacturer's stock and buy a custom one? Does it make that much difference?
@rogeeproductions25093 жыл бұрын
Hey bro , thanks for your supportive words, I swapped stocks to hoping to improve accuracy on both. The 308 not a big jump in accuracy but the WSM I noticed a marked improvement, probably due the increased ability to manage the recoil better with a Chassis system(straight pull)

I guess I am sort of middle ground, because I love watching the shoot and recovery, but always skip any butchering, and I am definitely not a veggie. I asked you how much the animals weigh when you have to recover the whole animal, and you said ' Not much. Only about 60-70kg'. I've done most of the Great Walks carrying less than 15kg, and that was plenty. I can't imagine carrying 70kg up those steep and difficult slopes. The bottom line is that with the work you put into putting meat on your family's tables, that puts you above the people who criticize, and who almost certainly never do more than walk across the New World car park to get their kai.
