Roger was incredibly consistent this season. He never pitched the Yankees out of a game and gave them a chance to win every game he pitched. Indeed, they did for much of the season winning 20 consecutive games he started. Roger was 19-1 and cruising to another strikeout title as well before he was scheduled to start on 9/11 and the delay ended up giving Hideo Nomo an extra start and with the division locked up by September, Torre was cautious with Clemens. Not that it helped as Roger strained his hamstring in the ALDS, but he seemed ok by game 5. He had his velocity even hitting 100 mph on a 3-2 pitch to Giambi in the 3rd, but more telling he had his splitter. Then he gave up just 2 runs on 11 hits and struckout 26 in 18 1/3 innings in the ALCS and World Series including game 7. That's after he allowed just 3 hits and struckout 24 in 17 shutout innings in the 2000 ALCS and World Series. At 5:27 you see him blow a 98 mph fastball by Torii Hunter to end the 7th to get out of his only jam vs Minnesota, but he actually threw 5 of his last 6 fastballs at 98 mph after he got into trouble and the other of those at 97 mph. More impressively, he hadn't had to throw over 96 mph before that and 6 of his 8 strikeouts came on the splitter that game. Btw, Clemens wasn't on steroids at that time in May 2001 either. It's fitting that Clemens got Torii Hunter there because as I recall, Hunter struggled so much against Clemens he ended his career hitless. Clemens always dominated Minnesota in general. In May the following year, Clemens pitched against Minnesota the following year and again held them to 4 hits in 8 shutout innings, except he was probably even more dominant and struckout 13. I remember that game well because Clemens tied Minnesota great Bert Blyleven on the all time list. From July 2000 when Clemens returned after missing 2-3 starts and forgot about the defense and started throwing strikes until the game at Shea in mid June 2002 when Clemens couldn't pitch inside and got injured, Clemens was the best pitcher in the AL with Pedro injured much of 2001 and completely dominant, particularly in the ALCS and World Series.

It's funny because Mussina had a better year in 2001 across the board than Clemens, despite Clemens winning the Cy Young. Mussina bested Clemens in ERA, innings pitched, complete games, shutouts, walks, strikeouts (albeit by 1, and the Moose had one more start than Clemens), FIP, WHIP, ERA+, and WAR. What gave Clemens the nod over Mussina was the fact that he won 20 games, which is a big number in the minds of the writers. As for the playoffs, Clemens labored a bit in the ALDS, but stepped up big in the ALCS and WS. No doubt he would have gotten serious consideration for the WS MVP, as he was excellent in Game 3 (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) and Game 7 (6.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K). There were no major offensive performances in the World Series that year for the Yanks, so I feel like it would have went to either Soriano, Clemens, or Mariano.

That's an example of the final numbers not really telling the story. The reason Mussina finished as far down in Cy Young voting as he did was because his numbers were dramatically improved by the final month of the regular season when he had a 1.32 ERA. If you watch Mussina's first start of September when he nearly pitched the perfect game, the broadcasters even remark that the perfect game was the only thing to play for with the AL East secure. Prior to September, they had pitched the same amount of starts and roughly the same innings, but Clemens had a lower ERA, FIP, H/9, and 17 more strikeouts. Clemens was scheduled to start on 9/11, but wound up having to wait 14 days between starts, and once he got to 20-1 in his return, he really had nothing to pitch for. They only had Mussina pitch 4 innings in that one extra start which pushed him 1 K over Clemens, though Clemens still had more K/9. The wins and winning streak were partially a reflection of more consistent run support, but mainly Clemens consistency. Roger never allowed more than 5 earned runs and never pitched fewer than 5 innings and he only pitched fewer than 6 four times, one of which was a season-low 5 innings in his final start and another was a start in which he pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings with 1 hit and 8 strikeouts. Mussina had 3 starts with 6 or more earned runs and excluding his final start, he had 3 other starts where he pitched fewer than 5 innings. Still not bad by any stretch, but also why he wasn't going to become the first pitcher to start 20-1. In short, he finished 5th because the voters weren't suddenly going to move Mussina that far up the Cy Young voting because of a final month with little at stake after he hadn't been on their radar for the award. In Mussina's case, Pettitte was chosen over him for the all-star game because Pettitte had also been the better pitcher much of the season, probably until at least the middle of August.

@Yaboy28 He was a shoe in for World Series MVP had Rivera closed it out. A lock. All the talk wouldn't have been Unit/Schilling it would have been Rocket saves the Yanks. His legacy as a postseason performer was totally altered by Schiraldi blowing it in 86 and MO blowing it 01. And not to mention his lying ass manager McNamara saying he asked out of the game.....when you see him with a helmet on grabbing a bat when he's called back for a pinch hitter. With a little luck that's 4 rings, 3 WS clinchers.

@mattray9904 Matt, check out the new video.....Clemens 200th win in 1997 in Yankee Stadium. Utter dominance. 8 IPs, 12 K's, a million weak grounders. The Yankees were late on everything. The split was nasty, and he was painting the corner like crazy. The ESPN radar gun seemed way off though. Check it out.

@slapshot68 I was referring to JJ-ho3cx comment on clemens, but tbh idk. At that time, they would push starters more in games. So idk if his health would be able to last it, but if he did, then no doubt he would be similar to pedro.

@@slapshot68 Degrom has never thrown more than 217 innings so doubt that. Offenses were better back then too.
